Do not use protein for energy. Simple. Eat fat or carbohydrate for energy. Egg whites and chicken breast was a bolus of protein, with little energy. You simply were undereating.

The ketones are acid forming. A low pH I think facilitates infections. Maybe the acid load from having producting too many ketones overwhelm the kidney's ability to keep pH in a good range.
