I'm curious about the demographics of the paleo community. Is this information available? I'm interested in these types of demographics:
- Age: Average age of a paleo person? Would it be good to see this number lowered significantly?
- Gender: Are men more likely to be paleo? I was initially surprised at the number of ladies posting on this site and others, but I was probably biased.
- Income: Eating paleo can be expensive, are paleo wealthier than average?
- Location: Is paleo more popular in the urban/rural areas? Even though rural areas may have better access to fresh/raw foods? Western vs non-Western countries?
- Political Views: I don't want to get into a political debate, just curious if we lean to the left or right.
- Race: Are most people white? Is this more of a socioeconomic factor?
- Religion: Atheist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim? I imagine the dietary restrictions of the last three may make paleo more difficult to follow.
Edit, I forgot to add my own details.
- Age: 23
- Gender: Male
- Income: 60s, Computer Science grad
- Location: Houston, TX
- Political Views: Libertarian

Another edit, Caveman Bob posted this link http://www.tfaforms.com/228736 if you are interested in taking a paleoish survey on government involvement in food.

Here's a survey of more than 5,000 paleo dieters: http://naturallyengineered.com/blog/2011-paleo-community-survey-results-released/
Age............: 30. Gender.........: Male. Profession.....: Linux System Administrator (mostly Debian). Location.......: London, UK. Political Views: Exactly in the middle on the political compass test. Race...........: Probably English, but who really knows? Religion.......: Christian (Historical/Biblical/Augustinian/Reformed/Calvinist). Hobbies........: Dancer.......: Flamenco, Argentine Tango. Skater.......: Roller-skate/jam-skate. Reader.......: non-fiction/education as leisure. Cook.........: clean/simple/fresh/citrus. Perfectionist: This list as example. Workaholic...: Currently writing this from the office.
It would be cool if Patrik or someone could set up a survey style question in this regard. It doesn't help me much to scroll down the list of answers. Is that possible? Or any way to collate info from profiles?
Age: 38 Gender: Female Income: None, housewife Location: Bay Area, CA, USA Political Views: Socialist with Technocratic elements Race: Caucasian (Greek) Religion: Atheist
Age: Time is a trick invented by Swiss watchmakers (Ok, 44 yo)
Gender: Male (Love the ladies)
Marital Status: Happily Married
Religion: Christian Scientist (love my faith)
Location: Boston, MA Suburbs
Political: Conservative (though always try to see things from the other perspective, too...I like some things about the Liberal/Democrat side, just do not outweigh the things I dislike).
Race: White (Spanish/Irish Ancestry)...though frankly: I've never seen a white person or a black person, some are more peachy colored, some are more chocolate colored, some are more tanned, but we are all the same beautiful type through and through.
Age: 21. I was done with alcohol when I was 20 but I still like to go out for a drink with friends once in a Blue Moon (see what I did there?).
Gender: Female last time I checked.
Income: Nonexistent. I'm a college student but I can still afford food through this magical little piece of plastic called a credit card.
Location: I've been having a love affair with Los Angeles for the last 18 years. Vitamin D supplementation? Wut iz dat?
Political views: Somewhat in the middle. Liberal on some things, conservative on others. But I hate politics so I tend to stay away from it.
Race: Filipino (Asian), with some Chinese and Portuguese. But I'm very detached from my roots, unfortunately. Never met another Filipino Paleo-er, although Filipinos do love coconuts and cooking food in pork fat. My grandfather was extremely fit (lived to be 92) and looked like Jon Hamm when he was younger.
Religion: Catholic. There are some things I don't agree with but I still go to church every Sunday like a good little girl *cough.*
Age: 21 Gender: Male Income: -, Computer Science Student Location: London UK Political Views: Left Libertarian Race: Caucasian Religion: Non-religious
I also created some statistics based on age and gender from all the answers here. Wanted to do more based on race, Location, etc but would cost too much time. Here my findings though:
Pretty interesting. Quite some more women than men, wouldn't have thought that.
Gender + Age groups:
Most people are between 18 and 34, something I am not really surprised about.
Not the usual graph, but pretty useful. Shows the Minimum and Maximum Age (15 & 16 and 64 & 65 respectively), the Median (where green and red meets) and Quantile 1 and Quantile 3 (1/4th are younger then the lower end of the red box and 1/4th are older then the upper end of the blue box)
Findings here: More women then men and men seem to be slightly older then the women folk on paleohacks. Oh and as a last interesting numbers, the Average age is: 29.36 for Women, 31.49 for men and 30.19 overall. The Sample Size is exactly 100.
Like I said I would want to use more of the Data like Location, Race and Income, but unfortunately it would take me ages and don't have that much time. This was really interesting I have to say.

Interesting idea. It looks like we're all pretty young so far. I really like the idea that our generation may bring a growing percentage of folks who will no longer accept the conventional wisdom that has been offered to us. Personally:
- Age: 24
- Gender: Male
- Income: 40s, IT tech
- Location: Denver, CO
- Political Views: I really try to keep my world contained to what I touch and experience day to day. Politics seem to cause a lot of frustration in a lot of people, when they have very little say in them day to day.
- Race: Caucasian (French/English)
- Religion: Agnostic though somewhat spiritual (regular yoga practice, meditation, ecstatic dance)
I'm especially curious about the income part; I don't think I could follow this diet if I made any less, I'm just not creative enough with things like canned tuna.
Certainly don't mind sharing my information.
- 28 years old.
- Student / Part-time worker.
- Currently living at home while attending college, but purchase all my own food and pay bills for utilities / phone / etc... I make it work.
- My home is in Berkeley, California, a few blocks from the Downtown area. Close enough to hometown markets, farmers' markets, and establishments like Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl.
- Politics is touchy... I would say I usually vote democrat, but am not hardcore left. I can see the weaknesses of either side's argument and usually (unfortunately, in this age), pick what I believe to be the lesser of two evils.
- I am caucasian - Irish/Hungarian (flavored with a small mix of other backgrounds) by descent.
- Religion is also something I usually don't like going into just in general, but I currently consider myself an Agnostic Christian Existentialist.

I suppose many people in countries which do not eat processed foods will be paleo without even knowing the word for it all over the globe - if you have to grow and eat your own veg and kill your own chickens because you have no money to buy processed foods you will be paleo by default. There will be many more people in that category than the few on websites like this who choose the diet. However leaving those aside it seems like there is a broad range of people.
I am (51) female, (I don't agree it is more expensive, you eat less, you eat no expensive processed foods), UK, free market libertarian which I suppose in the UK would be regarded as right wing although I am not sure it is really, white freckled which means 5% Neanderthal genes.
I don't agree Muslims, Jews and Hindus would find paleo hard to follow. You just have to slit the neck of the animal killing it the religious way etc and you are paleo. Veg indians eating beans and veg can be paleo and indeed need to be as they are more affected by sugar than many other races.

Is it good for the average age to be lower? I'd say yes on the whole, since its best to prevent problems young than treat them later , but I think the best indicator isn't average age per se but a greater range of paleo adherents, i.e. people who start young and follow through indefinitely on this lifestyle. This involves considerable time lag though, and the movement is still relatively young (ironically, it also happens to be the oldest...)
Are men more likely to be paleo? Well, there MIGHT be a slight skew because there paleo is more known in body building circles, which have marginally more men. BUT, this is similar to asking if most women are vegetarian...thing is, women are, statistically, more likely to make more conscious food choices because they place more importance on appearance; conventional wisdom tells us to cut meat, and a lot of women do that. Perhaps that might also account for any gender differences; but I don't have data to back up so this is just speculation.
Income: For me personally, paleo has slashed my bills. I buy bulk organic online & freeze; I don't spend any money on processed foods and rarely eat out. However, as far as trends are concerned, I think middle class people tend to be most health-centered, and thus more likely to read health & fitness blogs, which is where most stumble accross paleo. Again, this is but speculation on my part, no concrete evidence.
Location: I think it leans a lot towards the urban, since these are the people that most often suffer the 'diseases of civilization'...but I'm sure, on the contrary, there are a lot of people who are 'paleo' and don't even realise it, who live in the country.
Politics: This is reeaaally stretching it, and not to mention, risking it, but could it be that more politically open-minded people would also be more open-minded to consider something like Paleo, that goes against CW? I'm not defining which crowd is politically open-minded here - like I said, I have no political views. Ha. Just an idea.
Race: I think race is a little too wide a category. Culture really matters - how you were brought up, what your national cuisine is, and how close to traditional the food you ate was. I was raised on a carb-heavy, but very minimally processed, traditional Russian diet; I think the fact that I didn't grow up eating industrialised food and that I grew up in the country made a huge impact on my mentality about health.
Religion: On a personal note, in my family, we have never really practiced fasting (not IF - I mean the 'no meat or animal products' Lent fasting), and there's always been an emphasis on the fact that its the thoughts you put in that matter. Lent is a period when you calm down, stay away from excess and think a lot about morality. Its not necessary to stop eating meat. I've seen questions on Mark's blog about religious restrictions, and have seen that it's quite easy to adapt (I'm talking things like Kosher, or Ramadan)
Again, this is just my spin on things.
Lots of Love!
