You might try some of the Vivobarefoot models as they fit a little differently. Some are much wider than others. Most come with an I sole that gas some cushioning. Merell makes good shoes but they are on the narrow end - comfy for some and not for... (more)

Try Vivo barefoot, should have what you're looking for I've got a pair from leguano and love them but the uppers are generally very thin (mine have wool uppers)

I wonder if you can take a hefty piece of cowhide and fashion your own uppers that slip over the VFFs. Maybe add some loops that slip over your toes to hold them in place.
