"Everyone" is a pretty broad group to be clinically "deficient". From the looks of it, a good amount of the SAD foods are fortified with it, and the grassfed eggs/dairy/meats easily provide a day's supply. So, unless you're avoiding organs /... (more)

For the past few years, I've noticed (and so have others) that my skin has gotten a slight yellowy/orangey tinge to it. It's mostly noticeable on the palms of my hands, soles of my feet and on my face (laugh lines on side of mouth mostly). It's... (more)

Speaking as a person who has a genetic condition known as Gilbert's syndrome, which causes mild jaundice, I am very familiar with this topic. You say you liver enzymes are elevated, if so which ones and by how much? What is your direct bilirubin... (more)

Hi Guys, I wanted to know if there is ANY chance of beta-carotene from plant sources? I eat about 2 sweet potatoes, plus carrots per day. Everything I've seen on this seems to say there's no problem with this as any excess beta-carotene is... (more)

Supposedly Vitamin A can be toxic to the liver if taken in excess. Except in the form of beta-carotene. This had me nervous because I'm currently eating 2 sweet potatoes along with 6 cups of chopped broccoli a day. I've been doing this for months.... (more)

Beta carotene is pro-vitamin A, meaning, no vitamin A activity until the body converts it to a useable form. It's impossible to overdose on beta carotene because our bodies will simply reduce the conversion to next to nothing in the case of large... (more)

I'm making the assumption that like me, most of you eat a vast amount of vitamin A rich foods. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had this thought about too much Vitamin A in our diets? I for one eat loads of oily fish, red meat, eggs, butter,... (more)

The plant forms of vitamin A can't cause retinol overdose. You're not going to get anywhere near overdose from oily fish (2000kcal mackerel: 30% RDA), butter (2000kcal: 130% RDA) or eggs (2000kcal: 154% RDA). But even eating nothing but eggs and... (more)

If my poop is always orange after eating anything with beta carotene, does that mean the Vitamin A isn;t being converted or /and absorbed? cause I know I am Vitamin A deficient because I took too much Vitamin D, but I don't know if I am absorbing... (more)

Beta-carotene absorption is quite a challenge because it's an extremely water-insoluble compound, which is why it's best consumed with fats. It's probably likely that you're absorbing some of it, but not all, that's what most people do. Most... (more)

If you are not obese or have some sort of metabolic derangement, you likely won't have a problem with rice, bananas, white potatoes, etc. In the words of Robb Wolf, give them a try for 30 days. See how you look feel and perform. Track your... (more)

How do we now if LOW conversion of ALA to DHA and beta carotene to retinol means POOR conversion... Couldn't it be optimal conversion? I have always beens suspicious of this, and there seems to be more and more evidence that having a proper ratio... (more)

From my chemist point of view, our bodies don't particularly like to keep around highly reactive things. DHA/EPA is a good example. They are less stable (thus more reactive), our bodies don't want a lot of these around, so it makes sense that... (more)

Two different things going on here, from what I can see. Not tolerating pumpkins and carrots may be FODMAPS intolerance. Yes, Vitamin D & A can compete for some of the same receptors. Best to get your D level tested and supplement/sun to... (more)

I find my urine is generally darker in the mornings due to water loss through the night (from perspiration and breathing i assume). Has your water intake reduced in the past month, that would result in the change you mention. Other than that,... (more)
