Butternut Squash: Instant bloating, gas and diarrhea EVERYTIME. Why?

Well, my night is ruined.

For some reason this supposed "safe-starch" doesn't sit well with me at at all.

This is like the 3rd time I've experimented with one of these too, so it's not like the GI distress is some fluke.

Every other time I've chalked it up to something else "Oh there must have been some crouton crumbs in the bowl they mixed my salad in" LOL

And I didn't even eat that much of it tonight. I had ONE BITE and ten seconds later I knew I was in trouble.

Anybody know why this could be? Somekind of NAD I'm not aware of? FODMAPs, plant defense chemicals, etc.

It's weird because I can tolerate fructose, dairy of any kind, beans, potatos with skin, rice and even wheat/gluten perfectly fine.

I am NOT usually a food sensitive person.

I can easily avoid eating squash, thats not what I'm conserned about.

What I'd really like to know is what it is in the squash that is causing this so I can avoid other sources of it in the future.

how about pumpkin? Try boiling the chuncks eating only 1, then add another in every other day as long as you are tolerating. I'm very sensitive to fiberous veggies of ANY kind and squashes tends to hit me, but I can tolerate pumpkin best. I'm now eating BN Squash but I did the above, it took about 2 wks.

Thanks for the links. It's been a while since I've had either pumpkin or acorn so it's hard to say whether those are problematic too. I'll tell you this though I tolerate yams, potatoes, milk, cheese, corn, rice, black beans, beer made from barley, ice-cream, etc. All kinds of non-paleo foods perfectly fine and don't ever get any of these symptoms. It's weird.

Tonight's was prepared at home. It was peeled, cut into chunks, spiced with salt and sage, then roasted in some coconut oil. I do the same thing with sweet potatoes and I'm fine.

I feel your pain. Well, I mean, I have felt it. Stopped eating spaghetti and butternut squash as they f me all up. Gassy, bloated happen quickly, but the worst for me is the wicked rrhea that happens the next day. Feels like I'm trying to poop little bits of glass out. WEIRD. So I stopped eating them when I finally put it together. It's been since June or so of last year since I've had either, but I plan to try then again at some point in the future and see if the problem has cleared up. You might try the same. Give it some time and reintroduce it in a few months. It may just be a problem food for you though.

Do you have a problem with pumpkin or acorn squash? It might be a winter squash issue.

You said that you thought it may have been bread crumbs (in the past) meaning you ate at a restaurant. Was tonight's prepared at home or from a restaurant? I suspect some restaurants may be using oils and/or hidden spices to flavor the squash.
