Hey thhq. Yes, I notice the loss around shoulders and chest. So my question may not be so good. While waist may indeed reflect fat loss largely, loss of lean mass may occur at the same time, but show elsewhere. This suggests that the... (more)

Is there an ideal body fat percentage for each individual? Many idealize sub-10% for men, while average is somewhere between 15-25%. The reason I'm asking I cut down to below 12%, and my fat loss rate started stalling. I take this to be a... (more)

Fat loss rate is not going to be uniform. The lower the body weight, the less body fat and weight you can drop given the same stimulus. There are dozens of reasons for this. On to your actual question, "optimal body fat". To what are we... (more)

I don't know what "lipo" is that you are taking, but are you eating plenty of good fats? Saturated animal fats from pastured animals and fish will bring your HDL up.

Hi everyone, I am wondering the effect of the Paleo lifestyle on body fat percentage, particularly for females. Personally, I am finding it difficult to reach a low body fat percentage on the Paleo lifestyle. I've read that women are not meant to... (more)

I'm 5'1", 115lbs and about 22% body fat. I measure 35"bust, 27" ribs, 25" waist, 38"hips. DD boobs and bubble butt, decent amount of muscle, no flab. I'm not fat or thin. I can see my ribs easily when I raise my arms and have a flat stomach,... (more)

I was finally able to get a body fat percentage yesterday which made me wonder what I should be striving for aesthetically. I regularly hear men trying to get below 10%, which is clearly not healthy for me. I think I remember hearing that if women... (more)

what body fat percentage should a fit woman strive for -- This is a tough question that really depends on your goals. For men it appears that we can get pretty low and it has little effect on our health (i.e. 8% - 15% has about the same total... (more)

What is the most accurate body fat percentage measuring mechanism? There are so many: hydrostatic, DEXA, bodpod, fat calipers, tape measurements... What do people think is the most accurate? Is your opinion based on experience or hearsay? (more)

What's the purpose of knowing an accurate measure of body fat? Most folks probably would do fine with self-measurement methods... tape measures, calipers, even crappy bioelectrical impedance scales. It's just a way of quantifying what you see in... (more)

My math skills are laughable. I'm currently 140 pounds at 12% bodyfat. I'm going to do a protein sparing modified fast for two weeks (ala Lyle McDonald's RFL). For those two weeks, I will be on a 1,200 calorie deficit. 2 weeks = 16,800... (more)

IF all 4.8 pounds of weight loss were fat, and that's a huge "if," then at 135.2 pounds after the two weeks, if you still had the same lean mass as before (88% of 140 pounds = 123.2 pounds) then you'd have 13 pounds of fat. 13 pounds / 135.2 = 9.6%. (more)

For anyone in NYC (bonus to Brooklynites!), where can I go to get a body fat measurement with a Bod Pod or dunk test, or one of the more accurate devices? I found that Brooklyn College has a Bod Pod:... (more)

I'm assuming you want the Bod Pod/dunk test because of its superior accuracy vs bodyfat scales and pincer type devices. Brooklyn College/$75 sounds like by far the best deal around (I live in Brooklyn too); other places in Manhattan are even more... (more)

Is there any physiological benefits to having a six pack/low body fat percentage beyond the aesthetic value of looking good without your clothes on?

This is a difficult question to answer. Since body fat accumulation typically takes time, and it is not ethical to test force-feeding to increase fatness via randomized trials, there are only hypothetical advantages and disadvantages. One major... (more)
