Since I started paleo I've found that I no longer rely on coffee throughout the days and that I can quite happily go without it and have boundless energy. Also I was researching the side effects of caffeine on metabolism, ketosis, mental state... (more)

Hey Y'all. I'm 18 years old and had acne since around age 14. Switching to a paleo diet a year ago and realizing some food intolerances has cleared it up about 85% maybe. But I've noticed recently that when I start drinking coffee again (just... (more)
yes, probably the high content of caffein that triggers acne. I started with paleo to get rid of acne. I had to quit drinking coffee because of the breakouts I get from it.
I am exhausted upon waking (5am) and feel burnt-out every afternoon. Please hack my sleep! My hours at work changed last summer and I needed to start waking up at 5am instead of 6am for the opening shift. It didn't work out well. I???d get... (more)

Is there any physiological reason why caffeine doesn't seem to work for me? I am not a regular coffee drinker (probably indulged around 8 times in the past year). I do indulge in 3 squares of 85-90% dark chocolate about 2x weekly. Lately I've been... (more)
I'm thinking of doing the January W30 and the only sticking point for me is caffeine. I'll admit it: I'm an addict. I work too hard and sleep too little and if I'm going to wrestle myself out of bed at 5:45am to go run tabata sprints, I need a... (more)
Hello Paleo Hackers, I came to Paleo for mainly to change my mood. I've had clinical depression for almost a decade now and am still transitioning to Paleo. It's hard to assess what my mood will be like once i am fully acclimated to the diet... (more)
I inadvertently fell into a paleo diet while trying to cure my 4+ year long struggle with moderate depression (dysthymia) and the addiction to carbs and sugar that came along with it. In terms of 'normal mood' changes that I noticed, I find myself... (more)

Ok, so I have been somewhat skeptical in the past of certain claims within the paleo community, as my posting history here likely shows. But I have gradually "evolved" in my thinking on this issue, (Largely due to having recently rejected... (more)

I'm new to this and am wondering if I should drink coffee or not. Do you find it helpful or harmful? Does it make a difference? I have also read both views on coffee makes you thin/ coffee makes you fat, what are everyone's thoughts on that?
I agree with the above two posters. It jacks up my nervous system, and wears if down, something fierce. After enough days of it, I'm literally worn down. But, the workout power it affords is unmatched, the fat burning (while IF'ing) potential is... (more)

Does it matter how you brew your coffee?? I recently broke my French press and want to buy a Chemex. I don't drink tons of coffee and try to drink black teas or any teas also but coffee is just Mmmm-mmm good!!
Taste should rule within bounds of course. For me it is vacuum first then French press and chemex drip depending on the time and situation. Early am Fr P. but later drip but after full dinner back to vacuum. Da Jim

So caffeine and the stimulant in chocolate raises insulin. Insulin shuts down fat oxidation. So, if you are in ketosis, on VLC, won't drinking coffee or eating raw dark chocolate shut of that nice fat burning mode? I know when I am VLC, if I... (more)
I've been on the bulletproof version of the paleo diet for about 55 days now. I also began using caffeine daily, at about 100-200mg/day. At about the second week I ordered Dave Asprey's upgraded coffee and found it to be amazing. During this... (more)
Two things come to mind. The first is that you are low on salt, as Alexis mentions. But the more likely answer is that you are choline dominant and the excess choline pushed up your level of iNOS to the point that you create more superoxide which... (more)
I don't drink coffee because when I do it makes me, quite literally, ill. Even one sip and I feel so sick. But it is delicious, so I occasionally have some, and then very quickly am reminded why I never drink it. But I see so many posts on here... (more)
I don't consider it paleo. I would file it within the realm of exceptions like wine, chocolate, etc.
A fair number of people who are on paleo diets have complained about coldness (cold hands and feet) and recently I've noticed a pattern in myself: When I consume caffeine without any sugar, I seem to get colder, where caffeine with sugar seems... (more)
This may be tied in to the concept of "adrenal fatigue", in which caffeine and ketogenic diets are both implicated. Thus, it is possible that the sugar is off-setting some effect that the caffeine is having on you.
I love coffee, and for the most part, it doesn't give me any issues. However, sometimes, if I'm using half and half or drinking a latte, I'll develop extreme stomach pain and/or diarrhea. I've never had this problem using heavy cream in my coffee... (more)

Hershey's Unsweetened Cocoa makes me anxious. Raw Cacao does not make me anxious. Or so it seems. Does one have caffeine and the other not, or do they both contain caffeine?
I'm starting to suspect caffeine as a catalyst to some of my body's recent quirks. So, does anyone know of a naturally caffeine-free beverage similar to coffee?
