We have been putting a tablespoon in our morning smoothie for about 2 weeks. About 4 days ago I started with some very itchy hives. Can't get rid of them. Has anyone had that effect?

I like hemp seeds a lot. I usually add a teaspoon or so to my salads and kefir/yogurt. Chances are, you're not eating enough of them to make a big difference either way, so if you like the taste and they make you happy, go for it. I love cacao... (more)

I used chia seeds for the first time in a batch of homemade Kombucha on Thursday and by Friday morning I was having violent diarrhea, which lasted for two full days, approximately every 30 minutes. Other than the diarrhea, weakness from... (more)

You're not alone! For me it wasn't kombucha, it was chia seed pudding. While my reaction wasn't quite as strong as yours (thankfully), the general outline was the same. FYI: I've learned that I don't tolerate sesame seeds very well either.

Chia seeds, like flax seeds, are high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Yes, that's an omega 3, but it's not the form of omega 3 that humans need (EPA or DHA). Your ability to convert from ALA to the other varies based on your age and gender ... in... (more)

I have seen chia smoothies around a number of paleo cooking pages, as well as other recipies that use chia as a 'gelling' agent to make pudding/jelly like deserts. Is breaking (or blending) chia and letting them soak to a gel the best way of... (more)

Chia can be digested soaked or not soaked, it does not really matter if they are soaked or not, although nutritional benefits will increase slightly if soaked.

It's some kind of variation of the chia seed. It's all the rage. Several people have tried to sell me on this. It seems so typical of a new found miracle food with some obscure back story, even though nobody's heard of it. So I wanted to toss it... (more)

Poor conversion of plant omega-3 to usable omega-3. Poor absorption of its "abundance" of minerals due to phytic acid. All the other fun stuff associated with anti-nutrients found in seeds (gut irritants, etc.) Pretty much my standard argument... (more)
