How much coconut milk do you drink a day?

by 2932 · January 24, 2013 9:09 PM

Lately I've been using about 1-1 1/2 cans of coconut milk a day (in smoothie, making curry, etc). It's nice to have on my whole30. Is that a lot? How much do you guys use a day?

None. I cook with coconut oil probably every other day. I've never drunk coconut milk. I've had it in curries, etc.

For me personally, it just seems a bit odd, and somewhat extreme, this fascination many in the paleo world (especially new comers) have with drinking, or just consuming, very large quantities of coconut milk.

I'm not bagging on it, just that i mean if you step back and look at perhaps your weekly consumption of it, would it not be somewhat shocking? Things like that, and we all have them, are I've come to believe, somewhat less than ideal - consuming so regularly so much of one thing, especially if its out of can. No one else feel something deep down similar?

PS: I know the stuff is tasty; i know its healthy, etc.

I was going through about a can every two days just in my tea, smoothies, and occasional desserty type thing, but about a month ago, I stepped into a much lower carb style to see how I felt for a while, and also just to have break from foods I was relying on too much. So, coconut milk was banished, along with all nuts, seeds and fruit(I already eat no dairy), and any starchy veggies (which I rarely ate anyway )...I have been dropping fat, feeling much more energetic, and am generally in a better mood. To test my reaction after this break, I made a custard yesterday with eggs, coconut milk, and a few other ingredients, and noticed that it created a binge urge in me that I hadn't felt all month...so, I think coconut milk is off my menu now...what a money saver...plus it was one of the last foods I was purchasing in a package.

Wow...a can to can 1/2 is lot. I have about 1/3 to 1/2 a can. It becomes a laxative for me if I have more than that.

I don't use any. I cook with coconut oil, but rarely get the chance to eat coconut meat. If I do, it's in macaroons...I love macaroons.

Anywhere between 1/4 and 1/2 cup, depending on how much coffee I have - it's what I use in place of cream or half and half.

None. I tried having one can a day when I did a Whole30 and it caused me to become bloated and gassy. I tried a few different brands but it didn't work out. Bummer.

I eat around one can a day in my breakfast tea (with gee and a touch of honey) and in smoothies. I also drink 1 coconut water a day as a snack at work. I sometime snack on coconut flakes too. Any more than that or if I use any coconut oil at all and I get nauseated. I am not trying to lose weight by any means, so the more fat the merrier! Plus I have read that coconut products help with tummy troubles!

I often drink a whole can, or refrigerate it so the fat firms up at the top and then eat the fat as a dessert.

I do find, though, I need to drink it in moderation if I am trying to lose weight. A whopping 700+ calories per can is a lot. It doesn't seem to make me gain weight, but merely slows down weight loss.

I do use copious amounts in tea, which doesn't seem to bother my weight loss.

Probably about 250ml. I have it in my protein drink and on my breakfast. If I'm going for a big bike ride, I'll drink a 400ml can beforehand.

Yea, I'm more in th3 200-250 ml camp (usually with fruit). Hmm, and I thought I was eating a lot. Clearly I'm not even "on the map."

I'm reading everyone's post about drinking coconut milk out of a can, which obviously has more calories. Personally, I only use those for cooking and would never even think of drinking them straight out of the can. I am a coconut milk fanatic and drinks 8oz in the morning and a low pasteurized milk at night. While everyone has been sick around me, I feel more energize and I feel full throughout the day. So my suggestion is to try Coconut Dream in a carton; 80cal(1 cup), rather than the 700cal out of a can. Plus it's packed with Vitamins A, D ,B12, and calcium. I buy mine from an organic store called Mother's Market & Kitchen. Hope this helped.
