Hey folks, I live in Panama and i just purchased some raw, unrefined coconut oil in the ghetto. I mean it's really raw, straight up pressed and bottled in a liquor bottle haha. My question is, should I worry that the smell is tat of a burnt coconut? Will this have negative effects on my immune system if i take my daily spoon full in the morning. I just washed my hair with it because the gave me a liter for $9. Should I mainly use it for external use being that maybe here in Panama they don't follow certain "Organic" standards, or is the more raw the better? It smells almost a little burnt, could this be due to the pressing? I know it's all natural and they add nothing to it, it's almost a dark urine yellow. I am from Sri Lanka, and yes the virgin oil that is pressed out of dried coconut kernels has a yellow tinge to it (but the liquid should be clear/transparent), but it is a liquid (should be liquid at those tropical temperatures in Panama). Also, it should smell quite fragrant (like coconut based shampoos). If the stuff you bought smells burned, then the coconut kernels that were used to press the oil out had been smoke dried instead of being sun dried. Maybe o.k. but unpleasant to use in cooking. But, if the oil is cloudy, it means there is too much moisture - then do not use it, as it is going bad/will go bad (going rancid).
That sounds gross. Everything I had read has said good natural raw coconut oil should be pearly white and all the varieties I have seen here in the states have been pearly white. The one I bought from the company LIving Foods is said on the label to be 100% organic extra virgin, cold pressed, not hydrogenated, not bleached, not refined, not deodorized and is 'fermented to extract the oil.' Mine is pearly white and smells similar to dry coconut flakes. It smells really good and smelling it makes me salivate. It does not have any burnt odor at all. You could use this stuff as perfume or moisturizer and know you smell plenty good, even if a bit appetizing.
Personally, I would not ingest it if it did not smell good and look white, knowing as I do that it should. COuld be the one you have is not totally pure or properly prepared. Sounds like your source may have been cheap but also quite on the shady side. WHo knows what is in that stuff or what kind of cheap fillers have been added!
i would suggest to go on you tube and watch coconut oil being made by people and ask your self why yours has any color to it.

First I am from Trinidad coconuts have to go through a process of heat to get the oil extracted from it! In america they have machines that turn coconut oil pearly white! coconut oil original color is yellow & when it is solid its light yellow because its pure! just like african shea butter! the oil is not tainted Idk about the burnt smell thats unusual I get coconut oil transported from Trinidad to America all the time! Caribbean people arent dumb! they dont have the machines to make it pearly white like America does! so please knpow your facts before you comment & say dumb stuff!

I think the smell is actually a bit of fermentation. When I asked the people at Tropical Traditions about this with their gold label product (also a raw, unrefined coconut oil) they said that since it's wet-milled and not refined, there are trace amounts of the coconut itself in there that will naturally ferment. I think this may even add to it's antimicrobial properties, but that's a guess. Nonetheless, there shouldn't be any harm in eating it, though if you don't care for the smell that's another thing. I tend to use my gold label Tropical Traditions oil for cooking only and I reserve the less "funky" smelling versions for baking or body/skin application.
I think if it smells burnt there is no way it is raw. That suggests, to me, that there was high heat involved in processing. Also, I don't think that you even bought coconut oil. I have never seen dark yellow coconut oil. It should be white or clear. I think someone may have pulled a fast one on you.
I bought some that was from Ghana in an Indian food shop near me. It smelt awful and tasted worse so I have relegated it for external use- I'm not even sure if it's food grade as it ruined everything it came into contact with! I live in Asia so just use the Philippino brand Baguio... anyone know if this is deodorized?
Raw is raw my dear. If you don't like the smell or flavor, you can get raw steam refined. No smell, no taste, just processed with steam. Beware of those that are deodorized, and don't list how - those have been processed with chemicals.
