Sorry to hear about your b/f's struggles. He should probably go back to SAD, then transition to paleo (if he wants) very gradually. Even for healthy people, a sudden change in diet can lead to digestive problems, like serious constipation.... (more)

Cut out coffee and eggs for a week. Don't add anything new to the diet. After one week, reintroduce the coffee or the eggs to the diet and monitor what happens.

Very low carb can affect some people as insomnia. It's something to do with adrenalin and low blood sugar. (Someone will be along to explain it, I am sure) Maybe some sweet potato or similar with your evening meal would help.
