Powdered drink replacements - crystal light

by (0) Updated June 10, 2013 at 6:25 PM Created June 10, 2013 at 1:22 PM

I'm trying to find a substitute for crystal light lemonade for my kids. They drink a good bit of water and coconut milk, but go through tons of lemonade.

I'm thinking if the sweetener in these drinks can cause behavior issues and is just plain unhealthy, what can I do to replace it?

I think moderation is the key, honestly when it comes to lemonade. Make a healthier version with real lemons and some honey for sweetness for when they want a lemonade treat, but not for them to drink at all times. Water will be their best friend, though, so get them to like just water or water with fruit mixed in! Putting water in the fridge and letting it get cold with some lemon and orange slices in it or even berries will be a healthy alternative and help them not want that sugary taste nearly as much. It's also very refreshing.

I used to be hooked on the crystal light drinks...until I read the ingredients. What works for me is using a sparkling water (like perrier) and muddling in some different fruits like blueberries, strawberries or raspberries.

I also love adding about half a lime or lemon squeezed into the water for a lemonade style drink. You can add a couple drops of stevia to make it sweeter for the kids.

Also adding coconut water into perrier (half and half) is delicious too!

We make our daughter root beer with carbonated water, root beer extract we get from a home brewing shp, and stevia to taste. Use a very light touch with it. You can find other flavours as well.

There are also a TON of healthy, herbal teas that make excellent ice tea. Berry, fruit, mint, everything. Us the right ones and some stevia, your kids will think it's juice.

Lemons, cane sugar, water. Sounds awesome to me.

You're on the right track - continue to replace crap with water.

Also, coconut milk is pretty thick - are you sure you don't mean coconut water?
