Thirsty all the time

I've been on a paleo diet for around a year, but lately I've been feeling thirsty all the time. I would avoid trying to quench my thirst at night because I would always end up waking up to go to the bathroom if I had too much to drink. However, not drinking enough usually has me waking up a little cranky.

I thought it could be diabetes, so I tested my fasted blood sugar levels. The result was 84 mg/dl which is normal.

What could be causing persistent thirst? How should I tackle this problem?

Agreed. Anyone who has prepped for a hard night of drinking by pounding water all day knows this. Not that I know that from experience or anything....

Electrolytes are more important than drinking an arbitrary amount of water.

I experienced this as well. I also find that I urinate more frequently when I don't get adequate sodium.

Same here...even when I was low-ish carb but not in ketosis, I was very thirsty. Getting carbs up to at least 30% of caloric intake took care of it.

I am also a software engineer. I have a quart-sized cup at my desk and probably fill that 2-5 times per day with water. I like to drink a lot of water and remain hydrated, though part of this is to support my workouts. If you're thirsty, just drink more water.

I drink around 4-5 glasses of water. I am a computer programmer and am sitting in a desk almost all day, so I would say I live a fairly sedentary lifestyle.

How much water do you drink on a daily basis? Exercise?

Thirst is a common symptom if you're in ketosis. Are you currently VLC? I drink 2 of those 1L nalegene bottles a day plus a couple cups of herbal tea (I'm pretty active though).

That being said I used to drink way more H2O before I upped my salt intake. Maybe you're not getting enough sodium? If you have that dry unquenchable feeling that could be it. You can try adding a tsp of sea salt to a cup of warm lemon water in the morning and see if you notice a difference. Your body needs salt so if you're doing most of the cooking at home and eating whole foods there may be a chance you're not getting enough.

Thirst is a terrible cycle for me. Sometimes the more water I drink, the more thirsty I get. I usually don't feel "quenched" until I drink water with a splash of juice and a touch of honey or a white potato (for the potassium) with salt. I know those are verboten things for some paleo folks, but it works for me. Similar concept to Gatorade, minus all the garbage.

I think most people do not drink anything like enough water so as long as you have checked if it is not diabetes, do drink more. It is the cheapest best healer on the planet.

Why not hydrate by keeping a liter bottle of water with you and fill it when empty. I think the easy answer to your question is that you are not drinking enough. I would be so thirsty if I only drank 4-5 cups a day. I drink 2-3 liter bottles. Heavier in the morning, waking and drinking a liter around my coffee time and hydrating all day. You can stop a few hours before bedtime and see if you feel better that way. I drink distilled water because the size of the molecule after the minerals have been steamed out does not require work by our body to break it down for cell absorption. I also supplement my water with phour salts which are magnesium, potassium, bicarbonate soda and calcium which helps balance salts in my blood. One or more liters per day, I use phuriphy drops and chlorophyll. Puriphy cleans the water and our blood and the chlorophyll feeds our blood cells. The general rule of thumb is to drink one ounce of water for every lb you weigh.

For products that I use, you can find them on phmiracleliving.com

There are little videos that explain what the phour salts and puriphy drops are for. Chlorophyll is also there. I use 5 drops of puriphy and 1 dropperful of chlorophyll to one liter bottle of water. You would want to start with one bottle of either and spread it through the day and then increase over a few days. Maybe one liter of each by the end of the week would be good. It detoxifies you and keeps you healthy.

Good comments by the others. Just wondering, are you eating a lot of salty foods like olives, bacon, sauerkraut and pickles?
