Suggestions to curb hunger?

I started eating paleo about nine months ago and have dropped roughly 70lbs. Then I started into crossfit about four months ago, and am still eating a clean paleo diet. However, since starting into crossfit 5+ times a week my metabolism has shot through the roof. I find myself eating an entire meal and within fifteen minutes I feel like I could do it all over again. I've been trying to keep my meals full of protein and fats, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick, nor does adding vegetables. I am a fairly large guy 6'3" 200lbs. My question is for suggestions to satisfy my hunger between large meals or should I try and add more fat and protein to my meals?

Fuel that workout, son! Are you including dense sources of starchy carbohydrates in your meals?

Sweet potatoes, cassava, true yams, potatoes, squashes of all kinds, taro - eat it up!

I have two strategies for controlling my hunger.

First, and this is just me, any types of carbs bring on the cravings so I keep it low carb. As long as I avoid the carbs my hunger is manageable. I'm still hunger, but I don't need to eat.

The other thing I just started to do is take Hoodia tea. There are probably stronger appetite suppressants out there but I wanted to avoid taking a pill for this so I just use the tea. Seems to take the edge off and get me thru the night when my hunger can be the worst.

I am in a pretty similar situation to you. I started at 6' 228# I've been Paleo for about a year and initially lost about 25 pounds, though I've gained about 5 back in the past few months (upper body muscle I think because my waist hasn't changed). Initially I was just doing exercises at home but about 10 months ago started Crossfit, at first 3x per week but now I've upped it to 4-6x.

Since doing Crossfit regularly my appetite is huge, I am hungry all the time, even after meals. Initially I would try to eat light since I was trying to lose weight, I'd have a small breakfast and lunch then work out at around 5-6pm, then get home and eat basically whatever I wanted as long as it was Paleo. This worked great and I lost a bunch of weight and girth.

However a few months ago my appetite kicked up another notch, I think I got to an ideal/natural weight for me and have less reserves, and even after a big dinner I'm still hungry. I am so voraciously hungry that it's tempting to go off of the diet sometimes, just to get more food. The thing about the Paleo diet is that there aren't any empty calories, which is basically the point of the diet, but also hard to get any "filler". As it is I cheat a little more than I'd like on cheese, nuts and chocolate, but I find I am just starving and need the calories. It sounds like this is about where you are now.

I've tried having a larger breakfast but that does not really seem to curb my appetite in the evenings. One thing I've found that helps a lot is to have high-carb foods right after the workout, either sweet potatoes, plantains, fruit with almond butter, etc. I also got some whey isolate protein powder and have a protein shake when I get home from the workout. I am not a fan of smoothies, supplements, and ultra-processed foods, and even though this is protein I consider it to be high-carb because it probably hits my system about the same as carbs. Something like this blunts my hunger for an hour or so and allows me to make it to dinner without snacking.

The other thing that helps is to eat about 1.5-2.0 hours before the workout. I usually eat lunch at noon and work out at 5-6pm, so I'm a little hungry when I get there and then starving afterwards. If I eat something at about 3pm, that helps the workout and I don't feel as hungry after. With Crossfit I definitely don't want anything in my stomach for the workout so I am sure to eat it at least 1.5 hours before so it's digested and processed.

Also I've become generally more lenient with the carbs, I will have a solid portion of carbs most dinners (whereas I used to be very low carb) and about once every week or two have an intentionally high-carb meal. I always used to avoid carbs like the plague but now think that my body just needs them to restore its energy reserves.

I guess in short the answer is to just eat more. This can be hard to do having tried for so long to lose weight. I will admit it is kind of fun to be hungry all the time, eat basically whatever I want (within certain parameters), but never gain weight and feel and look great. It's like being a teenager again :-).

Eat a ton of carbs immediately post workout only, while you're still hot. Sweet taters :)

Take some clean whey isolate for a bit of protein sparring aminos with them.

Give em an hour or two to digest and get into you.
