Since last august I developed mild acid reflux and bloating overnight. I have taken multiple antibiotics right before that happened for sinus infections. To this day I still have bloating throughout the day. Im 131 pound male that is 5 ft 10. Im so skinny and my appetite is ravenous. I have been on antifungals and the candida diet since December after finally finding out what was wrong with me while doing my own research. I finally got diagnosed though with Sibo last week so the naturapath said stop my probiotics and the MD that works there gave me a colon cleanse and a 7 day course of xifaxam which I know pretty much stays in the gut. I have been on digestive enzymes for 6 months and my last tests came back with major pancreatic insufficiency. I believe that is from the enzymes so now my pancreas got lazy. I recently switched to sweedish bitters. I was eating a lot of coconut bread and buckwheat that I just recently found out isn't the best for sibo. I cut out my rolled oats, coconut bread, buckwheat bread, and my rice. Im at my wits end here, Im so hungry and the bloating isn't bad at first wakeup but the end of the night its bad. My digestion is still bad, I still have some undigested food in my stool. I digest protein horribly and my dr said to not eat as much meat but I have to. Im so depressed and just wanna eat. Any tips would be great. I would like to have a few pieces of pizza at least once a month or ice cream once a month or so but Im terrified. However it doesn't matter what I eat I feel the same way. The Nystatin has helped me though for the past few months, I gained my energy back. I m an mma fighter, a student and a full time employee. I haven't fought since I got sick. It kills me to see people eat regular diets and to see my fiance eating whatever she wants in front of me. I used to eat hundreds and hundreds of carbs a day my whole life. Also tons of sugar. I know I will never do that again but will I ever be able to eat somewhat normal again. I haven't touched gluten for two months either. Does it just take awhile to go away or what else do I need to do. I also rotate olive leaf extract, garlic and peppermint tabs every two weeks. Everyday I take Nystatin and sf722. Thanks for any responses. My life just plain sucks right now

Ever since going Primal/Paleo 6 weeks ago I've started to experience low blood sugar episodes randomly throughout the day and after meals.

I chose to go VLC (20g net carbs) at the start just to eliminate any cravings and I had a lot to lose. I gradually worked my way up to 40g now. When I was at around 20-25g I experienced the worst hypoglycemic episode ever. As the carbs went up, I was still experiencing the disorientation but it improved. I still experience it, it's like being a in a state of confusion and I get very disorientated/tired, sometimes it will happen after just drinking some water or eating a meal with protein and fat, sometimes with carbs or alone or just randomly at any point in the day. It's like a rollercoaster. The thing is, I am not a diabetic (it does run in the family) and never diagnosed with hypoglycemia. I have completely eliminated fruit and starches for the time being. The only caffeine I drink is a small dose of green tea some mornings and I eat a little cheese, but I doubt this contributes to the issue. I eat plenty of vegetables at every meal with enough fat and protein.

I remember going through energy crashes throughout the day when I use to eat a lot of fruit and high carb, but never anything like this. Even when I use to eat pasta, I would feel good after a meal, considering my blood sugar levels felt stable. Now I get moments where I can't function and literally phase out, my energy, mood and blood sugar levels feel very unstable and erratic.

I get enough calories. My ratios are usually 150g fat, 100g protein and 40g carbs. I'm not comfortable increasing carbs and stalling because my weight loss has already slowed down (despite decreasing calories to around 1700 as well). I'm a female, 5'8, 24 and 150 lbs.

Has any one else experienced this?

When butter is used to cook, is the PUFA content oxidized? The PUFA percentage is small, but it's still a concern to me. Should I be concerned about heating it too much?

I'm thinking that if the butter is grass-fed, there are sufficient antioxidants. I'd like to see some links to articles/studies on the topic.

Hey All,

I haven't found any reported evidence on this around the Internet, but I tend to get a real buzz or burst of energy from eating half a can of canned oysters (about six or seven of them should do it). Has anyone else had this experience?

I don't get the same buzz from taking Zinc supplements, though I feel like Zinc and its impact on testosterone levels would be the most natural explanation.

Any thoughts on this?

I've been eating Paleo for two days. I track every thing I eat on the my ffitness planner app. According to the app I'm only taking in about half my daily calories. I'm doing no exercise right nroe order than working. I'm a server so I walk about four hours a day. I start crossfit next week and if only working is eating up all my calories exactly how much should I be eating. Before paLeo I probably ate twice a day..2 really bad meals. Now I'm ea ting all the time, am ALWAYS hungrybut still apparently not eating enough. Being a caveman is hard grr.

I have been Paleo for about 3 weeks now and am feeling much better for it. However, as a student my food budget and time I have available to do food shopping is limited. I am currently buying meat from supermarkets (mainly Tesco) and these are probably from grain fed animals.

Does anyone know of British high street supermarkets sell grass fed meat products? And what is the chance my local butchers will? Also, are there any alternatives to Kerrygold butter, my local shops don't sell it.

My final question: is eating grain fed meat fine but just not ideal; or is there such a large benefit from grass fed meat that it is worth me hunting it down and paying a bit extra for it?

Thanks.

So a little background...I'm a 31 year old male, right now I'm weighing in at 200 even. Last year I got into running ultras and dropped down to a low weight of 168, but injured myself and ended up putting the weight back on bringing me to my current state. I work out for about an hour a day and eat sensibly(no refined flours, sugars or artificial ingredients). So fast forward to now....I started the paleo diet two weeks ago and try as I may, I can't seem to top the 1500 calorie mark with out feeling stuffed( fat intake is about 30-60 grams per day and protein is about 70-90). Also even working out for an hour a day(cardio) plus weights for 30 minutes every other day.....I can seem to shed a single pound...I feel great food wise but the lack of weight loss is very off putting ......anyone have any suggestions?

Help!

Just started Paleo 2 weeks ago (exactly) for my kid, a 7 year-old with two patches of eczema on his legs. 14 days later there are days when it looks better and days when it doesn't (we're taking daily photos for comparison), but he's now sporting rashes on his arms (inside near the elbows, not on the backs), plus the back of his knees.

We've been really diligent about following the grain-free and dairy-free model, and after everything I read I just anticipated his skin would clear right up rather than worsen. Anyone else have any experience with something like this? Did it get better?

I think the article was circulating in the Paleosphere of one of the top bloggers or even WAPF. Can't remember! If I remember correctly, the article showed that although we have 98.5% similar genetic material, our digestive systems are really different from chimpanzees. So it was dissing how some try to push the vegetarian angle using the chimp (and another primate)-human digestive system similarities. I'm not talking about the blog post Scientific American picked up on recently. If anything, it was probably an article written to dispute that. Ironically, I'm asking because a colleague wants to go Paleo and she came across SA's post and asked me what I thought. My reply was that we diverged from there and grew a smaller digestive tract and bigger brains due to meat consumption but if I could put my cursor on that ellusive article I'm searching for, my brain could relax a bit.

TIA,
Sandra

http://paleohacks.com/questions/197382/are-there-any-reasons-not-to-eat-bonesAre there any reasons not to eat bones?Stephen Ross2013-05-25T23:02:57Z2013-05-26T04:06:47Z

Bones are extremely alkaline.

Bones have a form of calcium that is shown to be superior to calcium salts in clinical trials for bone mineral density.

Bones are a solid source of calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.

Bones naturally occur in the meat that we already eat and advocate.

Most Apex predators eat bones at least sometimes.

Umm, so yea, I feel like there should be an obvious reason why such a cheap plentiful food-source is barely discussed at all on a site that focuses on traditional "paleolithic" foods.

So why aren't people eating bones? At the very least to meet the RDA for calcium this seems like a great idea. So, what's the holdup, what's the obvious reason that nobody is doing this that everyone just inherently knows? Why is eating bones as a calcium source to balance out and meet mineral RDAs taboo/a bad idea??

It must be a bad idea because otherwise more people would be doing it, so what's going on here?

I've got a tiny farmers market that is very hit or miss, or I can drive the hour and a half to Pittsburgh for the Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, East End Co-op trifecta.
I just found this wonderful online company, but unfortunately most of their products are candy and nuts. However, they do offer a multitude of freeze dried fruits and veggies.

Plus they have dried coconut (unsweetened!) too! Win!

So I got a sample of this product: http://www.nutsonline.com/driedfruit/mixed-fruit/simply.html and found that one serving (.4 oz) is actually quite a bit of fruit. More than enough for me to add on top of homemade yogurt or cottage cheese and feel really decadent.

I've been using frozen berries when I feel like a sweet treat, but I think I might just switch to these. Serving vs. Serving, the freeze dried things have 2 carbs whereas the frozen berries have something like 20 or more.

Good idea, bad idea?

Ok here it goes. I am new to the Paleo/Primal nutrition lifestyle. My elimination of wheat has come to an end. As of this morning no more grains/wheat products. Yes I am also reading labels. It is in the majority of our food items. That being said there were several things I noticed while I was eating grains/gluten/wheat. Some of this is graphic I guess. First is the extreme gas I had. It was chronic and all day when I was at the peak of CW eating. Also along with that came anal itching..LOL!! Sorry just part of the problem I guess. Bloating or feeling like my stomach was extended out more was also noticable. The other typical sugar high/low was there as well. I will say this much grains play hell on the brain as well. That craving is powerful.

Are the symptoms I described above typical of a wheat/gluten intolerance?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I had a baseline blood panel done by my physician prior to starting the paleo diet 4 months ago. I am planning to have more blood work done soon and I have read about a few online startups that offer affordable blood panels and nutritional recommendations based on your results. http://paleohacks.com/questions/153870/update-plus-bounty-how-should-i-start-working-out-paleo-primal-styleUPDATE PLUS BOUNTY --- how should I start working out, Paleo/Primal style?Varelse2012-10-05T16:21:21Z2013-05-26T03:06:18Z

It's time for me to start working out again.

I used to work out, before my Primal days. Long story short, I lost too much weight and got too weak after having an ulcer. After going Primal and gluten-free, the ulcer has healed, my digestion has greatly improved, I've gained weight back, and I feel much healthier. I'm ready to start working out again. The thing is, I'm not really sure how to go about it. When it comes to diet, I feel like I've got a good handle on that. But how I worked out SAD style, or when I was much younger, is probably not how I want to go about it now. My friends are all about P90X and chronic cardio, but I don't think that's the route for me.

UPDATE: So now I do want to lose a little weight (I've gained about ten pounds, yah yah). I know I can do that pretty easily by cutting out my sweet and gluten cheats that put a little extra on me in the first place, but I know it will be faster and better with some more focussed workouts and I want to increase my fitness level anyway. Also, my new job does gym membership reiumbursement so I'm all about that. I just joined a small gym (there are only two in my town) that has the usual weight machines, free weights, and cardio equipment.

BASICS: 5'5.5" currently about 155 lbs, no major health problems, high energy level fidgeter. I HATE jogging for no purpose, but I do like walking, running TO and FROM places, and the elliptical.

Can you wonderful hackers help me develop a workout plan? I'd really appreciate some help from some of you fitness gurus! SPECIFICS are great as I don't have a lot of experience with weight training and I don't want to just go to the gym with no plan and start playing around with weights! Any videos, charts, infographics are also great! Best and most specific answer gets the bounty. Ask any questions you need to determine how to best guide me and I will make it a point to answer promptly.

Short Background:

Between July 2011 and September 2012 I managed to gain about 60-65 pounds. Going into the reasons why I gained the weight is a whole other discussion. However, I began switching my lifestyle to Paleo this past Fall and really dug into it this past November.

Due to the fact that I gained weight so quickly I obviously incurred a great deal of stretch marks on my stomach, hips, and on an area of my thighs. Now that I am slowly losing weight and becoming an overall healthier person through Paleo and fitness, I also want to begin healing/fixing my skins issues. I ultimately hope I can diminish my new stretch marks and repair my skin. The only marks I ever had before were the ones I gained during puberty, and scars during softball, soccer, and track.

Yesterday, I started taking a Vitamin E supplement, and I also purchsed some Vitamin E infused bars of soap for topical use. In addition to that, I started applying Palmer's Cocoa Butter to the affected areas of my skin.

Questions:

How much Vitamin E is too much?;

Would you recommend anything else to heal my skin?

Thank you, I appreciate any input and advice provided.

Although I usually try to avoid gluten, I occasionally will have a few beers. I've never been tested for celiac so don't know if I'm gluten-intolerant but have noticed that when I have lighter-colored beers I tend to wake up the next day feeling bloated, like I have a sinus infection, and like I've had the tar beat out of me. When I drink darker beers, like stouts, however, I feel fine the next day and have very few reactions. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Is there something in your life that makes you think "if I made some changes with 'X' I think it would be for the better"?
For me it is exercise. I tend to go too hard, too long and too often. In my head I know if I knocked it down a notch (or several) it would more than likely be for the better but I still find myself doing too much too often.

I'm gluten/dairy sensitive (and eliminating corn, soy and chocolate more recently). I've had a weird neurological symptom for about 5 months, like a non-verbal tic, with my tongue and lips and middle teeth. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? My doctor had no response because she had no idea what it was. It gets worse sometimes (like when I eat chocolate, caffeine or corn, I just realized), but never goes away. I've had to start wearing a night guard for my mouth.

So coming from a background where I used to be super-fat, and then I dropped 130 pounds to be in-shape and fitter through calorie restriction and near daily exercise (crossfit, calisthenics), I can't seem to rid my waist fat.

I got OCD about losing weight and worked out to the point of looking somewhat emaciated and it's been tough eating more because I have been hung up on trying to stay "fit" and I usually don't eat enough and sometimes I go without food.

My problem is that recently I ended up giving more calorie consumption a shot and not feel deprived and now my waist is looking larger. Granted, I have been doing crossfit for awhile but I was always in a deficit on calories, so obviously not much on strength gains. It's been varying to say the least. I'm consuming about 3000 calories a day, some days a bit less. I'm 5'11" - 6', male, 28 and weigh about 175 pounds when I weigh myself in the morning.

When I dropped weight at my most extreme, I was around 167-170 pounds, looked emaciated and was before starting crossfit.

I can't figure out why my waist has been getting bigger, I've been eating more fats, proteins, and 1-2 servings of fruit and plenty veggies. (sometimes I cut carbs for an entire day). I feel tired, despite 7-8 hours of sleep. I've been gradually cutting diet soft drinks out.

I can't for the life of me figure it out, my belly isn't getting fatter, just my backside.

Could eating more food/calories be causing my body to rebalance itself and trying to get used to not being in starvation mode? I'm talking about my waist looking fuller overnight, or 2 days later. I'm concerned.

I was doing Peanut Butter for more calories recently but was feeling sick off them, inflammation like no other, so I switched to avocado for fats, perhaps 2-3 a day.
