Tonight, I noticed that the same symptoms have also appeared in my thumb and pinkie on the same hand. I've read up on gout, and it doesn't seem like that is the cause- no joint pain or stiffness at all. Any ideas?

EDIT: Sounds like paronychia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paronychia

I really hope I can get rid of this without having to resort to antibiotics, knowing how much they mess up gut flora. Let the warm-water soaking commence!

UPDATE: I soaked my fingers a few times in salt water, and the infection rapidly cleared up within a couple days.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/102458/hack-my-finger-pain/102494#102494 Answer by November for Hack my finger pain November 2012-03-04T07:07:57Z 2012-03-04T07:07:57Z
Yes, do the soaks. However, since it's spreading, please be careful. No harm having doc look at it. If they want to give you antibiotics, you can still choose to eat them or not. If I had that, I would eat them, and I rarely eat antibiotics. Can't remember the last time. I've heard too many gory stories of people losing limbs or lives from just that sort of thing going untreated.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/102458/hack-my-finger-pain/102530#102530 Answer by superworms1000 for Hack my finger pain superworms1000 2012-03-04T13:33:13Z 2012-03-04T13:33:13Z
Funny- I'm just getting over this type of infection. I let mine get pretty bad before going to the doctor- 7 fingers were very red and painfully swollen (I have had minor infections before that cleared up after a week or so). Antibiotics round 1 didn't work and I returned (rather peeved) 2 weeks later and left with anti-fungal meds and a different type of antibiotic. Horrible reaction to the new antibiotics aside (saw another doctor after a severe allergic reaction who told me to stop taking whatever I was on), I believe that the anti-fungal medicine really helped and I have not had any pain/severe swelling since.

Word of advice- don't let this infection go. I didn't think that I had let it get too far when I first went to the doctor only to find out that the infection was causing a fever. It took a total of about 2 months to clear and I am still slightly concerned about one of my fingers.

Good luck!!!

:3
http://paleohacks.com/questions/102458/hack-my-finger-pain/102558#102558 Answer by Dragonfly for Hack my finger pain Dragonfly 2012-03-04T16:14:21Z 2012-03-04T16:14:21Z
Vitamin D in high amounts seems to work like an antibiotic.

You could try 40,000 IUs of D3 for 2-3 days & see if it helps. If not see the doc!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/102458/hack-my-finger-pain/102614#102614 Answer by Jake for Hack my finger pain Jake 2012-03-04T20:31:43Z 2012-03-04T20:31:43Z
RSI?

http://www.einspine.com/rsi_resources/rsi_faq_what_is_rsi.html
