I've been having minor issues with my sinuses and ears for the past several months. Finally decided to see an ENT since my regular doctor just prescribed antibiotics and nasal sprays. I had a CT Scan done and still awaiting to hear results from the ENT. In the initial consultation I asked if these issues can be caused by acid reflux. He said no, but asked if I had heard of Prilosec and told me I should take one everyday. I just got done reading Chris Kesser's series on GERD the night before. Should I trust this doctor anymore?

He started my roller coaster of body destruction by suggesting me to keep on training (cycling) while having Mononucleosis instead of resting and listening to my body + described me antibiotics.

Not to mention how he likes to treat almost every symptom with medication and has absolutely no clue how food can screw you up.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/109649/do-you-trust-your-doctor/109657#109657Answer by Jen for Do you trust your doctor?Jen2012-04-04T13:35:10Z2012-04-04T13:35:10Z
One opinion that you disagree with is no reason to write your doctor off completely. If you have strong opinions on certain therapeutic and lifestyle choices, it's going to be very tough to find a doctor who agrees with you on certain things.

Instead, treat a doctor's advice like what it is-advice. It is additional information to help YOU make up your mind. For example, this doctor gave you the information that acid reflux will NOT solve your ENT problem. Therefore, you know that anything you do to solve the reflux- be in medication or diet adjustment or meditation or whatever- is not going to fix the ENT issue- that other methods and possible connections should be explored.

I had an ENT issue awhile back and was simultaneously trying to solve my horrible crushing headaches. It took a doctor to point out the fact that they could be related and explore the mechanism of that relation. We disagreed on the method to go about solving the issue, but that doesn't mean his advice was unhelpful or that he was a bad doctor. Modern medicine is simply one more tool in your box. You can choose to use it, or not, but throwing the tool away simply leaves you with fewer options than before and gets you no farther ahead.

It's funny how people assume that either their doctor is always right or always wrong. I understand that because they are advising you on such important matters, trust is a huge issue. Do your own research and discuss it with your doctor. His opinion is just that, an educated opinion that can help you chart your own course.

Use a good health food store with an ND. Naturopathic doctor. I had sinus infections that were cleared up with colloidal silver and olive leaf extract, viruses cleared up with elderberry syrup and vitamin C, and zinc, Chest infections cleared up the same as the sinuses, ear infections gone with using a formula that the health food stores have that contain garlic oil and mullein, etc- you smell a little like salad dressing, but it works fast. And I had constant acid reflux and problems that were cleared up with 2 things- #1- the ND said I had a small hiatial hernia-drink a full glass of water a couple of times/ day and bounce on your heels- it will pull the stomach back into place- weird but it works. #2- I actually was getting acid problems from having a LACK of acid in my stomach- took HCL tablets from the health food store for about 3 weeks. In around a month's time I had no more problems- also changed my diet too- I eat admittingly around 85% Paleo now- worked for me- never any acid problems since- hope some of this helps you too. :)

No more, no less. I'm certainly not going to trust my doctor on lifestyle or diet choices, when he's received just about zero training in that field. Having said that, the man cut into my body, did what he does, and relieved me of a condition I'd had for years. I'd say I trusted him 100% to allow him to perform surgery on me.

Don't hate doctors - hate the system! ;-)

They cannot seem to find answers to serious problems. Indeed, I think antibiotics are the only reason they have an illusion of competence. Antibiotics do, at least, kill bacteria. Go in there with an odd complaint, like nerve pain, extremely low blood pressure, whatever. I feel like I am in some perverted version of the boy who cried wolf, because, considering my luck, there will be that one time when they could have helped, but I won't go because of all the times they failed me.

He and I have an "understanding" -- He doesn't push me (too hard) to take his drugs, and I don't avoid coming in for my follow-ups so he can track the progress of my MS. HOWEVER, we have had our tug-of-wars over treatment decisions -- for example, one of the side effects of statins is muscular degeneration. I have multiple sclerosis, one side effect of which is muscle weakness. It is IMPERATIVE that if you are on statins and you have muscle weakness, you stop the medication -- but I asked him how I was supposed to KNOW whether it was a side effect of the DRUG or the MS... and how HE was supposed to know, since I already have so many plaques that they can't count new ones through the old ones. LOL So... I don't take statins, and I won't... and he and I 'discuss' it every time I go in... and I -still- won't take them. LOL

I had high blood pressure, 160s/90s for no apparent reason, and he took plenty of time to look into my family history and my own health history, and prescribed a medication that wouldn't interfere with my exercise preferences. After I started eating primally, the BP went down, I went off the meds, and then it went back up a bit. He took at least 30 minutes with me last appt charting my HD risk factors (zero aside from the BP) and we agreed I'd stay off the meds, maintain my healthy lifestyle, and chart my BP regularly.

I think it's great when you find a doctor who works with you and doesn't just fill out a scrip and call "next!"

Lowered my cholesterol by 178 points and she didn't ask me what I did differently. Wouldn't you at least be curious? All I got was "looks like we don't need to treat this."

She recommended:

3 meals and 3 snacks a day

Drinking two Boosts if I missed a meal and 1 Boost if I missed a snack (have you SEEN the ingredients in that stuff?)

Always eating half an hour within waking up

A meal plan based on a wide range of exchanges where the range from lowest to highest was a difference of about 900 calories

She was okay with eating soy garbage and artificial sweeteners.

She basically typed in my info into a program and printed off a meal plan robotically.
