I think a lot of people might begin the Whole30 or 30 day Paleo challenge only to give up after a couple of days because they dont really know what to expect...

http://crossfitforaqueen.wordpress.com/2012/04/04/30-truths-in-30-days/

What was your experience? Did you notice anything unusual or surprising that you wren't prepared for?

Has it changed much after the first month? For better or worse?

It turned out that I have a terrible time with a certain class of foods (FODMAPS), and fructose just kills me. By adding in some bone broth, some water and dairy kefir, and removing almost all fruit + some other FODMAPS (coconut milk, and easing back my use of onions, primarily), I feel oodles better.

I guess the point is, if I hadn't already learned that the paleo lifestyle was a good one for me by drifting towards it for a year before trying the whole 30, I would have quit and said paleo was a bad diet. I think I would tell people to be open to the full range of what paleo could be--more carbs (or less), more fat (or less), more protein (or less). Also to think about adding things to heal the gut--bone broths, probiotics, stuff like that.

I did have a couple rough days and I'm always more than honest about that to people, but I'm on week 6 and never gong back. My allergies have improved, adhd, pms, and even some of my hearing. (some of my hearing loss is due to swelling.

First couple of days were okay, but yesterday and today I have felt my mood kind of slip. Hubby and I are both doing it together and we both seem to be short tempered. I'm curious to see how the month progresses and would like to hear other people's responses.

It's tough but I KNOW it will be worth it!

Just wish me luck for the upcoming weekend.... :)

I have been moving more and more towards Paleo/Primal over the last year and thought I was doing pretty well, but this is proving to me that I am not...headaches, body aches, lethargy, insomnia...it is really challenging. I was kind of in the camp that as long as it was whole grains and such, it wasn't such a bad "cheat". I am really rethinking that though. This is hard.

I am sticking with it though. If this is what it is like to "detox" from processed food, I do not like the thought of what it is doing to my body when I am actually eating it.

Some problems just take a little longer than 30 days, extra experimentation and elimination, additional supplements,... and comments like
"It will get better after x days" are of course meant to motivate people
and may have been true for people saying it, but it still doesn't make it a standard
and may give people false hope.

Anyway, the fact that you haven't seen much difference in those 30 days doesn't mean you should throw the concept away and go back eating SAD all of a sudden. I wouldn't focus to hard on that number and just remember you're doing your body a great pleasure and who knows at day 32 you're experiencing a whole new world, happy as hell you didn't stuffed yourself the day before with crappy food because the mighty 30 didn't work out.

The first two days, my head was trying to explode. I am the consummate Diet Coke addict and completely caffeine dependent. In order to stay away from sweeteners, I've been drinking unsweetened tea, but it's still a significant decrease in caffeine from what I was doing before. Therefore, I've had to get some headache meds because I actually began to have tunnel-vision. Today, I must admit that my mood is having a difficult time.

What I have noticed, however, is that while I already knew that I am gluten intolerant and am generally good about avoiding gluten, this has certainly increased my awareness of what I am eating and my stomach is feeling loads better already. I am cranky and want rice and such in a bad way, but I am beginning to think it is not only gluten with which I have a problem and that this process will help me figure out how to feel better on an ongoing basis.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/109891/what-to-expect-those-first-30-days/140656#140656Answer by JB Primal for What to expect those first 30 DaysJB Primal2012-08-04T17:03:19Z2012-08-04T17:03:19Z
For my first 30 days, I still had some carb cravings, so I went ahead and ate fruit and sweet potatoes to my heart's content. But after about two weeks, my desire for carbs diminished and I naturally settled into the 50-75 g of carbohydrate per day.

Even then, I lost about 7 pounds those first two weeks. I think everyone has different experiences, but I say that dropping wheat and grains is 2/3s of the battle. Give yourself a little time to adjust and your body will naturally settle in.

Yeah it was hard the first week or two..I was craving sugar and dairy so much. I did have headaches for a couple days starting out. But after those couple of days I felt amazing. Yes its hard..but man oh man it is worth it! I don't think I am ever going back to my old way of eating the 80/20. I have so much more energy, sleeping better, my skin is better, I have psoriasis (autoimmune) and its not healed completely but its getting better! Not to mention the weight loss/body reshaping!

I had a little problem with energy at the gym in the beginning, but that seems to have passed.

My energy is through the roof, my mood is super happy, and I feel such clarity in my thinking.

I don't know the last time I felt so great..I was probably a kid or something.

Cheers to Paleo!!
