<p>Even though he is not a dietician, the guy who runs the "Diabetes warrior" blog - who managed to pretty much cure his illness by following a paleo diet - is being threatened by government regulators.</p> <p>The lifestyle - can I call it a lifestyle? Because it is for me - that we follow go against what the government commands us to do when it comes to food, so I'd say no one is really safe if they are recommending people to go paleo. <p>They are allowed to recommend anything they want. However, they are far most likely to recommend anything that can withstand legal challenge, state board challenge, and peer challenge. Call it "conventional wisdom" or "go with the flow" but it is what it is. But before you can get to recommending paleo diets, you have to find that small number of dieticians who actually believe in paleo who are willing to put that professional necks on the line. Its a crappy nutritional world we live in right now but I have optimism the more paleo takes hold.</p>

<p>No law that I know of that prevents RD's or other certificate holders from giving any advice they want, but as "wildwabbit" pointed-out making recommendations strictly within the confines of the USDA Dietary Rcommendations offers the greatest protection from civil liability.</p>

<p>Recommending clients to cut out sugars and highly processed foods, and promoting whole foods isn't exactly anti-USDA dietary recommendations. Except for grains, that's probably the most important part of paleo.</p>
