Lillian 2012-05-29T04:28:25Z 2012-05-29T08:12:14Z
Hi, I'm new. I'm a 23 year old female. I was diagnosed with insulin resistance about 4 years ago, but I suspect I had it from much earliear (I was an overweight teen). Both my sister and mom have it, my sister has PCOS (I don't). I was put on metformin and that helped me achieved a normal, yet not optimal, weight. I also seem to have hair loss, which I guess is related to IR. My sister has hair loss too (more aggressive than mine, I guess due to PCOS). I also have really persistent dandruff that not even Nizoral nor T-Gel have cleared. I want to lose more pounds and find it difficult, etc. No acne or other nasty symptoms though... oh, wait, I have some sort of mild depression and low libido, too, which I also recently learned could be related to IR.

I have recently been reading about paleo/primal and how it effectively reverts insulin resistance. This in itself is awesome, because I could eventually stop the nasty metformin... and regain happiness, energy, motivation, and look great in a bikini, among even more benefits... and I was wonndering if any of you ladies out there with IR or PCOS (or both) who have also had hair loss have seen some regrowth after your hormones stabilized? I mean, I will try Paleo by all means since it's a cure for IR and all the related problems, I just don't wanna get my hopes up about my hair since maybe Paleo won't help with that.

Thanks!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/123252/paleo-insulin-resistance-and-hair-loss/123258#123258 Answer by Amanda for Paleo, Insulin Resistance and Hair loss... My situation is a little different because the low estrogen is causing my PCOS & not the insulin resistance in typical cases. So I'm doomed to a life on birth control. But I had very drastic hair loss very fast & it grew back. Our bodies are very adaptable machines. Go paleo & take your health into your own hands.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/123252/paleo-insulin-resistance-and-hair-loss/123280#123280 Answer by Happy Now for Paleo, Insulin Resistance and Hair loss... Happy Now 2012-05-29T08:12:14Z 2012-05-29T08:12:14Z
I think it is pretty complicated, but paleo in all of its forms has a good track record for helping with metabolic syndrome.

Though I have had many, many improvements, and my most recent ultrasound showed that my ovaries no longer contain cysts (after more than 7 years of confirmed PCOS), after almost a year of paleo (this stint) bikini body is still elusive, and some of my other symptoms persist.

I think I got pretty lucky though because only 4 out of 10 people respond significantly to dietary changes for PCOS (although I suspect a large part of that statistic is related to the legume and veggie oil heavy diets often recommended for PCOS). I think with serious hormone disregulation, you have to think in terms of years rather than months for progress, and finding the most skilled healthcare provider you can to oversee hormone panels along the way.

Exercise, getting enough sunlight, and taking care of the health of your liver are at least as important as diet with metabolic syndrome, so I think it is important not to overfocus on any one part of lifestyle improvement.
