<p>Im trying to get the straight dope on calorie info for these two. I live in Japan, and eat Satsumaimo. In Japanese Kanji, its says 100g raw yields 132 calories. But the regular orange fleshed sweet potato on the USDA nutrient database yields 86 calories for the same amount raw. </p>
<p>What gives? Are these two not related sweet potato varieties, thus, should they not yield similar calories?</p>
<p>Any help would be appreciated.</p>

If you compare the taste, you'll immediately recognize the difference. The orange yams taste a bit diluted, while the Japanese ones are denser. Those purple Okinawan ones even more so. There are differences among myriad sweet potato varieties, including taste, starchiness and the amount of beta carotene. And that shouldn't surprise you.</p>
