Veganvspaleo 2012-09-05T10:57:19Z 2012-09-05T20:22:16Z
I was previously vegan and am starting a journey of trying paleo. I have started to feel that when I eat beans or grains I just feel bad, and for a long time That diet made me feel good. I am having a difficult time coming to terms with the idea of eating meat, but have started having cravings for it. Curious about others experience turning from, vegan to paleo.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/147298/has-anyone-else-previously-been-vegan-and-now-trying-paleo/147304#147304 Answer by Erin for Has anyone else previously been vegan and now trying paleo? Erin 2012-09-05T11:34:04Z 2012-09-05T11:34:04Z
I was vegan 11 years. On and off vegetarian since 8 yrs old. All the vegan meat substitutes have gluten in them or wheat protein of some sorts and I didn't realize how yucky I felt until after I stopped eating them. I have pretty bad roseacea for 2 yrs now and that is starting to clear up too after only 8 days grain free. The meat thing I do my best to look past and I do my best to buy the largest portion of meat from local farmers (I'm pretty poor all things considered) It took me a few weeks to come to terms with it all but all in all I feel better on this diet than vegan and I never would have thought it because I thought I felt top notch on vegan diet. Turns out all the gluten and grains may be the source of my chronic joint pain (I'm only 35!) Waiting on my autoimmune blood work but I'm suspicious.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/147298/has-anyone-else-previously-been-vegan-and-now-trying-paleo/147311#147311 Answer by stevianut for Has anyone else previously been vegan and now trying paleo? stevianut 2012-09-05T12:25:15Z 2012-09-05T12:25:15Z
I was vegan for about 1.5 years from when I was 14, then reintroduced meats back into my diet after I FINALLY realised how badly my health was falling apart. I wasn't a "processed vegan", my meals consisted of relatively "healthy" fare, such a chickpeas, fruit, lentils, tofu, tempeh, green vegetables, soy milk, wholegrain cereal, wholegrain bread, root vegetables, with a tiny bit of fat such as olive oil and supposedly healthy margarine. To be fair, I did have body image issues which were the main reason I turned vegan in the first place, but in reality going vegan made them so much worse as I lost a ton of weight at first (mainly muscle mass), then when I started upping my calories for more energy I gained it all back and nearly all of it was fat. Even when I was getting enough calories for my age, height & activity level I still lacked the energy and vitality every 14 year old should have. I also found it isolated me from those close to me and as a result I lost many friends and fell into a deep depression. Only recently have I begun to get my health back on track using paleo foods and beginning a strength training program twice a week. Adding meat back in your diet (grass-fed if possible) along with healthy fats such as coconut oil and butter would probably be one of the best things you could do for yourself. Don't feel guilty, it's about the most natural thing you could eat.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/147298/has-anyone-else-previously-been-vegan-and-now-trying-paleo/147314#147314 Answer by hannah for Has anyone else previously been vegan and now trying paleo? hannah 2012-09-05T12:59:58Z 2012-09-05T12:59:58Z
I was. My biggest recommendations are:

Be patient with yourself. It takes a while to get used to eating this way again. Meat is scary and weird at first, only because you haven't been around it. It honestly took me a full year to get used to cooking/handling meat, as well as the textures that I wasn't used to, etc. Introduce less "scary" meats first... and then see where it goes from there. The first time I cooked meat with the bone still in was a big step, but is no big deal now.

Find community that supports this lifestyle. If you're surrounded by vegetarians and vegans who think you're a terrible person for eating animal products, you won't get very far. Crossfit affiliates, for example, are full of ex-vegans/vegetarians who are now eating more paleo/primal, and would support and guide you through this process.

Listen to your cravings! Your body is clearly wanting meat if you're craving that. I remember coming off of a super grain/legume heavy diet and still wanting that, BUT out of habit, not out of need. Now, just the thought of beans is slightly repulsive to me...
http://paleohacks.com/questions/147298/has-anyone-else-previously-been-vegan-and-now-trying-paleo/147318#147318 Answer by anne l for Has anyone else previously been vegan and now trying paleo? anne l 2012-09-05T13:13:54Z 2012-09-05T13:13:54Z
i was vegan for years and vegetarian before that... i ate a lot of carbs, especially grains and beans! i had come to the point where i was pre diabetic and i am very thin. someone turned me on to the paleo diet. i did a lot of reading and it made since to me.

it was a difficult change for me because i had totally bought into the "animal products are the devil" way of thinking. my kids and other people in my life thought i was crazy, but i feel like a new person! some of them after watching me for a year have gotten on the band wagon!

i would not go back!!!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/147298/has-anyone-else-previously-been-vegan-and-now-trying-paleo/147404#147404 Answer by Diana for Has anyone else previously been vegan and now trying paleo?
