Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? - PaleoHacks.com most recent 30 from http://paleohacks.com 2013-05-18T19:14:10Z http://paleohacks.com/feeds/question/150535 http://www.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/rdf http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? Jessica 2012-09-19T16:04:29Z 2012-10-06T16:59:29Z
Hey, guys, I posted back in July about paleo foods making me sick and have since gone to the doctor and arrived here again. To ask a new question. My results came back as negative for all food allergies (that I was tested for, including whey, casein, and eggs) and my allergist suggested a gastrointestinal specialist, as he couldn't test for in tolerances there. I'm going to hole off on that other appointment, because the fact is, for me, veggies and fruits have made me feel off even before paleo, and whatever's up, it probably isn't going to change anyway. Which brings us, almost, to my main question. Paleo has done a lot for me, and I want to keep eating this way, but I'm at the point where Neolithic foods disgust or don't appeal to me but fruits and veggies on Paleo make me sick. Paleo also has me fatigued, basically turned my reproductive system off, and has me pudgy in a few places, which absolutely never happened (or happens- cheated for a two days with grains and junk at a friend's birthday and actually lost weight, yes that fast, and shot up in energy) on the SAD diet. Vegetables and "healthy" things have always made me soften up in my stomach, even in small quantities. Undeniably, grains (or carbs) make me feel much better; incredible energy, happiness, lean body, soothed and attentive mind, and fabulous baby making instincts (that I do not act on, mind you). I don't crash unless it's sugary. The solution seems easy- eat more potatoes and other paleo carbs, right? Except those make me feel sick and run down too. I feel worse after eating a white or sweet potato than I do after three big bowls of ice cream. Honestly, only bananas and green beans don't make me feel bad (along with onions and garlic, but those are grouped with spices for me) in the way of produce. So, Paleohackers, keeping in mind the insane amount of words above, do you think I should add back in whole grains or rice and live off a diet of meat, eggs, green beans, bananas and rice/grains? If so, is there a preferred rice or grain? I have acne that flares to white flour and grains, sweeteners (honey, white sugar, brown sugar, stevia), large quantities of potatoes, olive oil, coconut oil, coconut milk, fruits except a banana or two, caffeine and likely continuous amounts of other vegetables. I don't know about whole grain, because I never liked it before. Without cheating and staying away from those foods, I'm clear, but still remain run down, soft in the stomach, lack the need to carry on my bloodline, and generally just feel shoddy. Sorry for the long post- I really need to learn to summarize. Thanks!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/150540#150540 Answer by Megan for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? How long you ever eaten clean Paleo at a stretch without any cheats, etc.? If it is less than 4-6 weeks, then you may not have given your body a chance to get past the withdrawal symptoms that people tend to get in the beginning. Alternatively, there may be a single food or food category that you are sensitive to. Just because you do not test positive for IgE-mediated reactions to a food does not mean that you can't have an intolerance for it. Something like the Whole30 or an elimination-type diet may be a good approach.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/150543#150543 Answer by Rob for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? Adding grains back in may only worsen this by increasing gut permeability and making you even more sensitive in the long run.

You would be a good candidate for the GAPS protocol to heal your gut and reduce your food sensitivities.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/150571#150571 Answer by Rocker323 for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? What I got was crushing depression.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/150578#150578 Answer by CJ for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? I even convinced my husband with my success.

I'd had an injury, and was out of commission for a bit so I wasn't losing. When I finally got back at the exercise I actually started to gain. I was also having tremendous carb cravings. I finally had to up the carbs and do some more grains. I'm 51 and premenopause and had a full period for the first time in 6 cycles. The stinking hot flashes also stopped and I have more energy than I had for awhile. I had been losing hair, maybe from the stress of the whole accident thing. That stopped too. A whole bunch of weight toppled off in about a couple weeks including everything I'd gained and then some. Now I'm kind of pulling back the reigns on the carbs again and it's going okay.

You might be right about the hormone balance thing and I'm wondering if you need the fats from the ice cream and that's why your body responds favorably. Maybe increasing some good fats would help. With the acne, you might consider staying away from the wheat and see if it helps. I know it helped my daughter with hers.

You might just have to tweak the whole thing to see what works for your body. I don't think there is a one size fits all answer and we tend to go all vegan, or paleo, or all wheat belly or all or whatever wind is out there and then when we hit a brick wall we wonder why.

All that said, The Schwarzbein Principle book was a bit helpful in this whole thing. Might consider getting your hand on a copy. I wouldn't take it word for word, but there is lots of good info in it.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/150613#150613 Answer by Kelly for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones? In my case my estrogen levels sky rocketed (extended heavy period, depression, etc) so I started on Wild Yam cream to boost my progesterone. That fixed the problem for me. If you have low libido and no periods you may have high progesterone and low estrogen. If that's the case I would look into natural ways to boost your estrogen.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/150535/should-i-add-grains-back-in-to-make-a-semi-paleo-plan-for-my-decimated-hormones/151537#151537 Answer by JeJ for Should I add grains back in to make a semi-paleo plan for my decimated hormones?
