Hi (again)

Just wanted to see if there were any UK/British paleo eaters? Many of the recipes I see and read are definitely aimed towards the US market and pallet.

Just interested to know if those Brits have any tips or favourite meals they'd like to share?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153028#153028Answer by paulie for Paleo in England?paulie2012-10-01T19:19:04Z2012-10-01T19:19:04Z
I've been trying to be paleo as much as poss for about a year (I struggle when cake is in the house!) but essentially I've just drastically reduced the carb intake in my diet and found new sources of good quality meat and vegetables - I've stopped buying meat and veg from the supermarkets and use sources such as bigbarn.co.uk to find local producers and butchers that sell free range grass fed meat and locally grown organic vegetables.

I have tried some paleo recipes and even bought a paleo cookbook but find I use these now only when I fancy something different or special. Otherwise I've just adapted my cooking to use my new sources of produce rather than the old supermarket produce.

As far as the cake goes if I stick to one cheat day a week then I reckon I'm doing ok, at least better than my old diet -I've lost weight and certainly feel a lot healthier!

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153043#153043Answer by GrassyArse for Paleo in England?GrassyArse2012-10-01T20:21:08Z2012-10-01T20:27:36Z
Another Brit here! waves I've been eating Paleo for three months now. :)

I buy grass fed meat and free range eggs from Piper's Farm butcher, fresh fish from the fishmonger on my road and organic veg generally from my local Waitrose. Also get items like organic coconut oil and coconut milk from either Waitrose or local health food store.

My favourite cheat is coconut oil mixed with Green and Black's cocoa powder and a teensy dribble of raw honey. It's beyond good.

I tend to stick to 'meat and two veg' type meals--also make a lot of curries and chillis which I serve with cauliflower "rice".

Basically I now use courgette and cauliflower wherever I would have used pasta or rice (either sliced for 'lasagna' or in ribbons for 'spaghetti' - I've also used sweet potato as 'spaghetti' too) and cauliflower blitzed in a food processor in place of rice.

Kale chips make a surprisingly good snack.

Organic chicken livers fried in lard with onions and then blended smooth into pate is gorgeous eaten as a dip on veg sicks.

Any time I need something cheat-ish I use coconut flour, coconut oil and a bit of honey / lemon zest / vanilla essence blitzed in a food processor, smooshed into cookies and baked for about 10 minutes at 170 degrees C. ;)

I've been on the VLC waggon for 18 months (since catching the diaetes), doing Paleo for the past 6 months.

I don't really have the talent (or inclination) to be cooking clever "Palaeo" meals, I just eat lots of meat and vegetables.

I'm from North London, which is good because they put up with all sorts of hippy shit around here.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153062#153062Answer by Eve for Paleo in England?Eve2012-10-01T21:29:34Z2012-10-01T21:29:34Z
Hello! This is my first post on here but I've been 'lurking' for a few days... I'm from Sheffield (UK, not the one in Alabama lol!) I've been loving the paleo thing for a month or so now - I went on it to try and combat PCOS, and so far I feel great! I wasn't even planning to lose weight but I've dropped 2 inches from my waist with no effort and I'm less hungry and less tired than I have been in years!

I have my first NHS fertility treatment booked for the 5th November - I would LOVE it if I turn up and they tell me I don't need treatment after all :) Maybe wishful thinking but its certainly motivation not to cheat for the whole of October...

I've just been eating massive piles of veg with some sort of protein (steak, liver, eggs, turkey breast - you get the idea!) I've been frying most things in Coconut oil that I got online from a company called Coconoil, and here in Sheffield we're lucky enough have a butchers called the 'Real Meat Company'that sells grass-fed and free-range meat - their bacon is amazing! It used to be a national company but the recession got to them and the only branch left is here in Sheffield...

Morrisons recently seem to have changed their fruit and veg section so that they have all sorts of interesting and wierd looking veg - if you have a Morrisons nearby its definitely worth checking out... They're often pretty cheap too :)

As for recipes, my favourite invention this week has been fried diced cabbage with little bits of bacon and chestnuts mixed in. Top it with lots of black pepper and pinch of sea-salt and chow on down! :D

They do unsweetened toasted coconut flakes, and unsweetened dessicated coconut which are both delicious ... Plus Tiana brand coconut oil and flour. They also stock "Nakd" bars which are pressed dates, nuts, fruits and great for a sweet snack.
I have used them for honey in the past too. I was told all their honey is raw - including "rowse" brand which is pretty common in supermarkets.

When I was in London, it was a nightmare. Same garbage as most cities in the US. However, I do think in Europe there are less barriers and more viable "quality" sources of food. Take advantage of it. In Ireland, I found it very easy to get quality meat, eggs, butter, chocolate, etc. Much easier than in the US where you really have to search it out and plan.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153204#153204Answer by ANML for Paleo in England?ANML2012-10-02T17:05:37Z2012-10-02T17:05:37Z
What brand is the Coconut Oil you got from Sainsburys? I'm assuming it's probably the refined Coconut oil which isn't recommended. Ideally you should get "Virgin" coconut oil (Extra Virgin is just a marketing term for the same thing).

You can buy it online from amazon.co.uk they've got good deals, or Coconoil as someone else recommended.

MarksDailyApple website has some good Paleo recipes that I've done before. And you could easily just substitute existing reciples as mentioned.

Paleo shepherds pie, paleo toad-in-the-hole etc :)

Also look down towards the bottom right of the page where the "Related" box is, lots of UK specific posts with more info.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153223#153223Answer by Luca for Paleo in England?Luca2012-10-02T18:34:40Z2012-10-02T18:34:40Z
I only just started 5 days ago. I have not found it too hard as I went off of bread a long time ago... the hard part is going to pasta as yet I do not feel tested but I will...

I started with Steak... which I cooked over wood and I had it with a selection of vegetables which I shredded and ate raw. I am going to try and cook over wood as much as I can... free cooking and it tastes amazing.

I have been eating a fair few apples, carrots and salads with tuna and eggs. For roast I had a pork chop on the bone with loads of different veg.

Today for my lunch I cooked a Sweet Potato Soup...

2 x Sweet Potato's
1 x Leek
1 x Garlic clove
Vegetable stock (I boil up any veg left overs with mushrooms to make mine (always have done this before finding paleo)
1/2 tin coconut milk

Soften the chopped leeks frying in oil and butter
Chuck in chopped Sweet Potato's
Add the Veg stock
Simmer to soft
Blend it up
Pour in coconut milk
zest a lime
crush the lime for juice

This was really nice, in fact next time I am going to make it thicker and use it as a sauce for prawns or chicken. You could even throw in come chillies.

Mainly though I am trying to not fiddle with food and just eat them as they come cooking veg sometimes but also having it raw (I like raw veg anyway cooking ruins some veg).

http://paleohacks.com/questions/153013/paleo-in-england/153246#153246Answer by David for Paleo in England?David2012-10-02T20:20:36Z2012-10-02T20:20:36Z
You could try the Paleouk group on facebook. The number of members is growing and a lot of the guys post food pictures and recipes.

Our go to dish is cabbage and bacon stir fry.

I've bought a few Paleo books, all of which from US authors, and have found the recipes easy enough to mofidy.

I'm no cook and like to keep it simple, protein and veg with spices and oil for cooking.
