Hi fellow Aussies. I am in Canberra and when I go to buy butter there isnt much choice. Is there one butter that is better than another for Paleos?

Pepe saya is the beez kneez of aussie butter. I can get mine in thomas dux, iga... it is pricy though. If you go the farmers market in canberra, there are a few butter people. I remember eating it from the packaging with a spoon. Freakishly good.
I often get the tasmanian butter from coles too.

Or is it more about the spreadability and/or taste?

It is a very pale yellow and a product of multiple farms. I like to know exactly where my food comes from so I steer clear, but it would be a step above supermarket fare.

In Brisbane there is an organic market Sundays opposite the RBH which stock quality raw, grass fed butter. However normally I buy Paris Creek Farm, it is always a deep yellow and while it might be from Holstein's it is a family run operation who genuinely care about what they're doing. From speaking with them I can tell you the cows are grass-fed year round and fed grain only when milked (3-5 mins, twice daily). They are a biodynamic and organic farm.

If you're in QLD, Baramba is another decent alternative which is more widely available than Paris Creek.

From what I understand it is produced from free range cattle..organic too. It has a wonderful taste and texture. Difficult to find where I live and when I can find it it is super expensive. :)

There is a NZ 'Westgold' butter that is grass fed that is in supermarkets in Sydney, quite probably it'll be in cANBERRA TOO.

That said, the best tasting one (imo) i have found at a good price was from Woolworths (Sydney).

Its called 'Organic Butter' by 'Macro Wholefoods Market'.

Could not find a picture of the butter itself, but here's what the logo looks like
http://www.woolworths.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Website/Woolworths/Our+Brands/Macro/

'Macro Wholefoods Market' is not exclusive to Woolworths (i think) so you may find it in other shops as well.

good luck

Ive worked in Australian dairies and the only time they dont eat grass is when they are being milked (twice a day, 20 mins intervals). They chomp on corn and grain, sometimes chaff (dry grass) etc so they relax and let their milk down. It would make up max 10% of their diet. Im more worried about the stuff they put on the grass they eat, dairy farmers love their fertilisers. An organic label would be the best bet.

Beta-carotene is absent from grain-fed cow's milk.
