I've got my 28 yo VCFS Crohnie son on SCD Lifestyles/Paleo diet. He lives at home and I've been Paleo 2 yrs (he's been 50% Paleo). I do all the cooking since he's cognitively challenged but high functioning. He was just discharged from a severe flare-up (cipro/flagyl, IV drip for days, clear liq x2d) and now SCD one week. He refuses bone broth, store bought Kefir and homemade yogurt (the whole Mom thing). I've got him on phase II of SCD Lifestyles. We skipped Phase I because he was NPO in the hospital and then clear liquids.

I haven't read the SCD Lifestyles book but had read the Vicious Cycle last year before I knew it would become important to me. I've just reordered VC from the library again.

But until I get it, does anyone know how long I have to keep him in each phase? One week each or as long as he tolerats meals? Niether the Lifestyles or VC websites say, or at least I can't find it. He's stoic and feels like I'm pestering him so I have a hard time getting feedback.

TIA

(I'm pretty sure it was 5).

A lot of people do the strict phase for a couple weeks and don't progress to Full Gaps (same as SCD) for about 6months to 2years from what I have read. It all depends on your response to foods when you attempt to reintroduce. If reintroduction is a fail, you would not reattempt it for some time 30-60 days maybe. I'd have to get the book back out to give definite answers as to how it reads, but I'd go with this.

what will he eat?

His inflammation initially presented as an inflammed ileum (right where the food transitions from the small intestine to the large) which caused fullness, vomiting, fever. The few times that happened, our naturopath had instructed him to go back to liquids which is what we had done and managed the few tiny flares he had. A few wks ago now, he went from mild (we had gotten rid of Asacol 2 yrs ago on our own) to severe now (Prednisone tapering to Remicade, or not if SCD and belly xray show no flare). I've got him in Phase 3 now and tolerating very well. Normal BMs. I'll continue advancing with no more than one phase per week or two and look for that "not hungry" sign I guess. When they are special needs, it's very hard to get feedback of any kind on energy level, hunger and hydration level, BMs, signs of relapse. *I tried making this comment to JayJay but couldn't get it to work.

when we were working through the early stages of scd with our family (i have three small children) we did the phase 1 for two days, and then added in foods one at a time one new food every three days working through the phases that way. it has worked really well because we've been able to pinpoint problem foods as we introduce them.
