There's research in progress that I recently heard of through UC San Francisco where they are studying the connection between gut permeability and heart disease and obesity. </p>
<p>I don't think it's hype at all, but it's going to take a while for mainstream medicine to catch up, publish, and then convince the public over the objections of big agra and big pharma which produce toxins and products that harm our gut flora. </p>

As other posters have noted, probiotics can help heal the gut, and even a Kaiser doctor I know recommends them after a course of antibiotics to re-populate gut flora. OTOH, both my wife and I have experienced skin flaking off after taking probiotics, which stopped within 2 days of stopping the probiotics. It's likely that we both have some intestinal weirdness going on, e.g., small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), but there can be a downside to probiotics.</p>
