Eva 2010-12-09T01:21:02Z 2012-08-07T10:01:14Z
My eyes are hazel, or at least it says so on my driver's license. But I've noticed over the last few months, a few people have commented on my 'blue eyes.' When I told them no, they are hazel, those people have given me a weird look (like I was stupid or something). Today I was looking in the rear view mirror when I finally realized, my eyes really are looking rather blue now! THe formerly green edges are now grey blue edges and the amber brown parts in the centers have shrunk down and appear brighter. So my eyes have somewhat changed color now, and I'm not sure what color to even call them. Grey blue brown? Bluish hazel? Anyone else notice their eyes shifting color after going paleo?

Edited to add: And in case anyone might be tempted to assume I'm imagining things, such a result may not really be all that surprising considering scientists actually do not well understand what determines eye color but think it is likely in part related to the density of proteins in the stroma part of the eye: http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=232
http://paleohacks.com/questions/15677/have-your-eyes-changed-color/15678#15678 Answer by mari for Have your eyes changed color? mari 2010-12-09T01:32:44Z 2010-12-09T01:32:44Z
nope. Cheryl White 2010-12-09T03:04:12Z 2010-12-09T03:04:12Z
My eyes are blue and I haven't noticed a change in them since going Paleo (but then I've only been Paleo for ten weeks), but I do know that when I have a sinus infection they take on this bizarre tint of green, almost like there's an overlay on them. I'm not talking about goo or anything coming out of them, but the actual color of my eyes. Maybe there's something to that protein idea and perhaps when I am ill there's a difference in the protein ratio(?) This doesn't happen when I'm sick any other way - just sinus infections - so there may be a relation since the infection is in proximity to my eyes. Of course, this is all just guesswork but you've got me wondering now too.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/15677/have-your-eyes-changed-color/15689#15689 Answer by Ed for Have your eyes changed color? Louisa 2010-12-09T11:27:23Z 2010-12-09T13:04:19Z
My eyes changed from hazel to deep green. I went from vegetarian to paleo over the course of ten years, and noticed the changes very gradually. I was told by an iridologist that I now have a very smooth and unblemished iris texture, which I was told indicates good health generally.

I think that instead of actually changing colour, the reality is that the 'texture' changed, giving the appearance of colour change. Rather than having large central 'striations' of hazel now, my irises are hardly patterned at all and very smooth, as if the highlights of hazel have disappeared giving the appearance of darker eyes.

So this sounds very similar to your situation, yet in reverse: your 'patches' of darker hazel disappearing to give the impression of lighter blue eyes.

So, assuming that areas of the eye equate to parts of the body as iridologists claim, your eye changes could possibly indicate that any health problems you may have been experiencing in the areas where you had the patches have now been resolved.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/15677/have-your-eyes-changed-color/15708#15708 Answer by Ambimorph for Have your eyes changed color? Green shirt = green eyes, blue shirt = blue eyes.

So really, my eyes are "all of the above". Heather 2010-12-10T18:25:52Z 2010-12-10T18:25:52Z
My eyes used to be green with brown patches near the pupils, and a few brown striations. I just looked at them, and the brown has largely faded to green, though not totally. I saw on the iridology chart that that would correlate with clearing up stomach issues - and the beginning of my paleo journey 8 months ago coincided with finding out that half my relatives have celiac's, and that I'm at least intolerant of gluten, if not full-blown CD. Not that I put a lot of stock in iridology since it appears to be totally unproven, but it's just interesting. I'll have to looke closely at my husband's eyes, his are green with some blue and yellow striations. Maybe he's lost the blue-yellow part.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/15677/have-your-eyes-changed-color/15956#15956 Answer by Egk for Have your eyes changed color? In the past year my skin seems much more golden and a darker shade.. It's not residual tan because I'm the same color all over and last summer I only tanned where my tank-top and shorts didn't cover (no time spent in a bathing suit). Looking at pictures of me next to my white friends this winter, I look tan as hell. Simibee 2011-03-30T18:10:09Z 2011-03-30T18:10:09Z
Like a lot of people on this thread with brown/hazel eyes, I've also noticed that mine have been looking greener since starting Paleo, and there is actually a pretty specific reason for the change.

The Paleo diet is not only naturally high in the xanthopylls lutein and zeaxanthin (plant pigments found in leafy green vegetables like spinach, eggs, animal fats e.t.c.), but also promotes very good absorption of these fat soluble nutrients. The yellow shade of the human macula lutea in the retina of the eye is dependent on the lutein and zeaxanthin that it contains, and the concentration of these substances has been shown to affect eye colour (http://www.iovs.org/content/46/2/692.full). A high concentration is believed to be beneficial to eye health, as it protects against blue light/oxidative stress, and thus prevents common sight problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/15677/have-your-eyes-changed-color/30577#30577 Answer by Oranges13 for Have your eyes changed color? One made in 2003, the other one a year later. And my eyes changed from greyish blue to greenish. My face really changed back then though, the color of my hair changed too, and my skin had a tan (I have tremendous difficulties getting a tan on my face, the rest of my body turns brown but my face won't).
