So, I've been watching Survivor this season and for grins I've been trying to figure out how I would prepare myself metabolically for the lack of complete nutrition experienced for 39 days.

I think I would supplement heavily to be repleat in every micronutrient, especially minerals, try to gain some significant body fat, and then get into ketosis before going so I could live off my body fat and not suffer from a lack of calories for the first few days like a lot of contestants seem to.

How would you guys approach it?

I mean, youd actually want a genuinely large amount of training. Courses like: Stone tool making, primitive weapon hunting, barefoot treeclimbing, some kinda bushlore course (either specific or generalised).

If you were skilled in these things , not only would you not go hungry, but youd be assured to be kept on till near the end because everyone would value the food.

None of the locations they are in, ever seem free of food (I mean, they are usually on fairly lush islands, once they were in africa), but more that the people on the show dont have the skills to get it (apart from some occasional fish). Ive never seen anyone dig up a tuber or root, or pick a leafy green. I beleive once I saw someone attempt some coconuts.

Has anyone ever taken down an animal apart from a caged chicken or some fish?

Oh, and id also study up nutrition, and select the food auction food based on what I lacked, rather than taste.

But your ideas aint bad either. Being in ketosis, might help, as would be replete with vits and minerals.

Ideally though, you wouldnt be short on food. it aint like they stage these things in the middle of a desert.

Id probably actually watch it, and it would be far more interesting, if there were a few people with genuine relevant survivalist skills on it.

There is plenty of food at whatever location, it is just a matter of trying to find it. You do have to remember that this is a game show of sorts and I am sure that there are contracts and other things that keep them from doing what any of us paleo junkies would do in their situation. It is about the game and if you are out finding food for everyone else than you are "up to something". You may last longer than the person that nobody likes, but then it will come down to if you are in the clic or not.
But yes being in ketosis and having all the vitamins and minerals would help immensely. If anything learn how to build a damned fire with flint and steel, or even take some nonperscription eyeglasses. Kills me to watch them not have a fire when one person is standing there wearing glasses.

The food they do provide on the show seems to be primarily rice. I would definitely want myself to metabolically flexible. I would probably prep by doing some fasted exercise to train my body to use fat, but I would still include significant carbohydrate in my daily intake.

I also would not gain fat prior to the show. Being aesthetically appealing is important to how the other players perceive you, especially when you are in bathing suits the entire show. I would want to go in looking muscular and ripped; besides even at 9-10% body fat you still have over 50,000 stored fat calories.
