I've found it very hard to explain to people why the way I eat is healthy and how good it would be for them to try it. i'm also really sick of having to continually argue against SAD conventional wisdom all the time. It's like, I learned so much about this topic (nutrition) and people's emotions and preconceptions make them go "oh, well you're full of shit, saturated fat is bad for you!" almost every time. It's really frustrating.

It's not my fault, most of the time I don't want to engage the carb-addicted, bread stuffing, idiots, but I struggle to ignore the raised eyebrows when I take a plate of meat from the buffet, or I eat about 10 sausages at breakfast in a hotel**

Someone confronted me about my meat stuffing antics during a business lunch yesterday. I politely tried to explain to her about evolutionary diets (and T2 diabets), but she just ignored everything I said and replied "when I was at school a girl tried the Atkins diet and all her hair fell out).

So just try your best to ignore them, and let them die from stuffing themselves with flour and sugar, which will hopefully leave more buffet meat and breakfast sausages for the rest of us.

*I don't really want to murder anyone, just sit by and quietly watch them die from fatty liver disease.

** yeah - I know the sausages probably have non-Paleo crap in them, but I didn't have any other options.

I just tell them I stopped eating x, y, and z, and I've lost weight, my blood work is much better and I feel even better than that. I just eat real food that requires no processing. I can pick an apple off a tree and eat it right away, or kill a chicken, and that's now dinner. If they say it's bad. I just go, eh, my measurements seem to say otherwise though, so I'm gonna keep running with it. How's your diet working for you? This is where the mind explosion usually occurs.

What people are doing must be good enough for them, for them to keep doing it. If you want to do good, you can explain stuff for those who ask with interest. To people who attack your choices, you could shrug and say that it seems to work for you.

Adjust with less indifference, if the people you refer to, are close to you.

I say, I eat natural foods, organic vegetables, fresh meat, fruits. I try to limit sugar and sugar derivatives.

I've not had anyone question that methodology. I've actually convinced a few people to give it a go. Then I give them my copy of PB or Solution and let them learn from the experts first.

If someone seems genuinely curious, I'll engage, otherwise I tend to tread lightly and resist my impulse to judge their choices (or lack of knowledge).

I know I'm often not very receptive to others' attempts at persuasion myself, and try to remind myself that I too was ill-informed at one time. When I do feel frustration, it's usually more on a meta-level, with our food and social/cultural environment which leads people in the wrong direction, even if they're trying to do the right things for themselves.

Don't worry about others. If you have what they want they will ask you how you got it. If you don't, they won't. And if they ask you and they don't want to do what you did, then it matters not at all for you. Just keep on keeping on.

These people do often ask me about nutrition or food-related things, but I just answer them according to the subject (a few weeks ago they asked if there was something in whole grains that leads to indigestion). I never frame it as "paleo" or refer to a specific diet at all. I think people are more likely to find their way to real food by picking up bit by bit until they reach this tipping point. At least, that was my case. Half the stuff paleo espouses were things I discovered in my own nutritional research while I was eating a "conventional healthy diet" (biggest one being that animal fat is only about half saturated, and most of that is stearic acid, which is considered in the conventional medical community as benign for heart health!) I just got to a point where I realized there was a community that actually believed the same things I had discovered and they were calling it "paleo."

When I was on a low fat diet (thanks to my registered dietitian who told me to eat whole grains - I hope she will get it right on her next patient) I had an argument with a person who told me that lard was better than EVOO. And I was trying to convince him otherwise. I still feel kind of embarrassed about that whole thing.

The best you can do is say to other people that you have a very special medical condition (like an allergy, or an inflammatory condition, whatever, as long as it sounds scary, scientific and mysterious) and you need to eat saturated fat - your doctor told you too.

People usually back off when they hear you have a special medical condition and they never bring up the subject again. I get to eat anything I want because I am gluten intolerant and nobody knows what the heck it is. I can use my gluten intolerance to cover all kinds of food, even if they don't have gluten. I can always say, "it is a cross-reactive food".

I know what you are saying though because I always get pissed off at vegetarians. One lady I know converted thirty people to become vegetarians for one month "to save our environment"! But people are the way they are and if you argue, you will never get on their good side. Just be firm and polite, and be nice to them. There is more to life than arguing about saturated fat, it is not worth it.
