As some of you may know, I am a big fan of Paleo and launching my new book later this month, The 4-Hour Chef.

Patrik and I were chatting the other day, and he suggested that we have some fun, and that I involve the PaleoHacks community and pose this question to you guys.

If you could become world-class in anything in 2013, what would it be? If you had a gun against your head, how would you approach it?

Give me your best answer in 300 words or less and the winner will get a 20 minute call with me to talk about anything they like: Paleo, blood testing, performance enhancement (chemical, dietary, or otherwise), or simply accelerated learning hacks.

Investing.

Or having your money work for you in some capacity. I think money is a tricky thing and is something that stops us from doing what we truly want to be doing sometimes, and if we are doing what we truly want to be doing it doesn't necessarily provide us with enough income to enjoy some of life's greatest pleasures (free time being one of them).

I think this is also very relevant to being "paleo" as well because money is possibly the biggest neolithic factor in our lives above all else. It creates unnecessary worry over bills, being tied down to a desk all day (for most of us), it can be the source of relationship issues, and the list goes on and on.

By taking a year to learn how to invest and make your money work for you, I bet you could remove all these negatives from your life and create immense amounts of time for you to use how you want to.

If I absolutely had to learn how to invest and there was a gun to my head, I guess I would do my best to seek out people who have been successful long term and try to learn from them as best as I could. Most times I think this is a short cut compared to years of learning through your own mistakes.

At gun point you would have to be calm, organized, methodical, logical, and predictive. These traits seem to be necessary to succeed in most things and I can say I'm deficient in at least a couple.

Possessing those qualities is the key to becoming world-class in anything else.

Syriac(an ancient language). I am slowly translating documents for my research, but I could do with improving my skills quickly. With a gun to my head I would probably pack my bags and move to Lebanon or India where I could immerse myself in a language school for several months. This isn't possible until July 2013, so in the meantime I am reading and translating as much as I can, working on clearing my mind of any worry or distraction when I research, reducing my work hours to devote more time to research, and keeping my life flexible so I can move there.

If I could be world class in anything in 2013 what would it be? Phil Cooke asks a similar question in his book - One Big Thing. I read the book 3 months ago so I've had a little time to develop my answer.

In 2013, I will be the world class brand within the realm of what I am most passionate about: Inspiring People To Achieve Peak Levels Of Health & Personal Empowerment.

...More specifically, achieving complete vertical alignment between my consulting business, my weekly show, and the product I am developing .. All of which fall in line around the topics of Intermittent Fasting, Paleo Lifestyle, and Gluten-Free Living.

If I could become world class at something, I can think of a ton of stuff I want to be an expert on. I would have to say the best choice would be trust. Whatever happens in life, I'd have no stress, I'd just be able to trust that everything will be ok and make logical decisions calmly.

As for the gun, it depends if I have achieved trust yet or not. For right now, a honest answer would be; I'd likely freak out, and freeze on the spot, blood pumping, with crazy thoughts racing through my head.

I would buy one of those spin bikes that are hooked up to the net and simulate any track in the world and train harder than anyone in the world. I would make it to top 5 women in cycling in the world! I would be up 4:30 every morning traing before my kids get up for an hour. Then an hour swim everyday when they are all sleeping. I would do heavy weights 4 x per week and join the rowing squad on the weekends! I would be the best inspiration to all women and I would somehow make it work! I would then enter the oxygen cover girl competition and win with my comeback story and results!! Yeah that's what I would do... Top 5 womens cyclist and on the cover of oxygen!!

Hey Tim,

Being a Marketing Consultant to B2B SMBs, I find that my highest value is setting the strategy and uncovering new revenue sources right under the client's nose, which gets me all of my clients relatively easily, but I don't get paid well enough for that particular piece of the puzzle. Because of that, I end up just folding the strategy in with whatever end deliverable the client comes to want after my recommendations (ie: conversion funnel creation/optimization, copy, automation sequences, etc), and charge a premium, but still not enough to make it all worthwhile in my opinion.

So, what I want to become World Class at is Dealmaking. At the end of the day, all of my clients really just want larger clients and big strategic partners, so being able to insert myself in that process and landing those deals is much better leverage of my time and skills.

"Pitch Anything" has been a great resource, but I'd love to hear how you make deals happen as the 4HWW really unlocked the leverage and effectiveness concepts that I'd like to master.

I’ve already implemented many of the quality of life hacks (Elimination and Liberation primarily) and am digging in deep on the body hacks (Slow Carb) currently to lose the last 30#s (of 60#s), so I’m excited to have the opportunity to dig deep on Dealmaking, hopefully with you, but definitely with others over the final 8 weeks of the year and into 2013!

I'd be a world class organic biodynamic farmer with some sexy butchering technique thrown in. So far my farming is limited to some herbs on my urban balcony. I used to work on my grandfather's farm, though and I love nothing more than working outside like that. First step in my five year plan is to move out of the city and start a backyard garden and get a couple chickens. Maybe it'll sprout, so to speak, from there.

Focus: I would like to be world-class at focus, just like Bradley Cooper in Limitless, only without the drugs.

We often talk about what's the best way, or fastest way to get better at something, but I think the real key is being able to choose a pursuit and focus on it with all of your attention. As Leo Babauta of ZenHabits says:

my ability to focus on a single task has dramatically improved, and that one habit has changed my life.

If I had a gun to my head:

I would incorporate meditation and mindfulness practice in my daily routine.
I would immediately reach out to experts in focus and meditation to seek their advice, such as Leo Babauta.
I would pay closer attention to the whole paleo lifestyle, because I know how important diet, exercise and sleep are for focus.
I would make the good things easy (meditation, diet, exercise, practice), and make the bad things hard (Twitter, TV, and other distractions).
I would start a daily journal on my progress to pay attention to what's working and what's not.

I'd become a world class epigeneticist. Epigenetics is above genetics and it's the idea that we can modulate our genes in our own lifetime.

The main approaches I would pursue would be:

Diet, epi-paleo by Jack Kruse
Acute physical stresses , working out briefly, interval
The Opponent Process Theory of Motivation.

There is an Opponent Process Theory of color, of motivation, of emotion. Basically I'm interested in the theory as it applies to emotion and motivation. This Theory attempts to explain drug addictions as follows:

You take a drug and it makes you very very happy. You feel kind of meh afterwards, especially after heroin, meth and though it's not a drug, orgasming. This has to do with dopamine releases in the brain. When dopamine shoots up to OMG super high levels, the body then has to compensate for this using an opponent process, which in this case would be to block dopamine receptors in the brain. This is why crack addicts feel like shit when going through withdraw and why it can take meth addicts years to recover, they literally have their dopamine receptors blocked.

The thing I really love about this theory, which you can see in the graph, is that the opponent process outlasts the initial stimuli. Which means, that drug addicts who over-indulge in the rewarding stimuli then have to wait a long time to get over their addiction. The cool thing about this theory is that it necessarily works in the reverse. Those who do intense acute stresses/obstacles then have a long lasting sense of well-being which is reflected in hormone production and neurochemical receptors in the brain.

For real world examples of the opponent process theory I'd like to remind people of the spartans who ruled fiercely and definitely understood the importance of discipline in building success. Fighting, sleeping on floors, scantly clothed. I'd like to remind people of self-flaggelation by the catholics. Cold Therapy by people around the world notably the russians. There are all sorts of real world examples and I'd like to fine tune them to help me and ultimately others reach their full potential.

World Class at self motivation and executing my goals.

I hold in high regard people who are both extremely open minded, and act tirelessly on what they believe in. Role models certainly include Tim, also Joe Rogan and Mark Sisson come to mind. I believe most people reading this are already open-minded, (like myself) though what separates the leaders in the world are their ability to act upon, and execute, their goals.

To achieve this I intend to keep establishing reasonable but strict regimens for myself including getting up early everyday, trying a new activity/group each week, and pursuing my passion of mountain biking.

As a community, I think people who have adopted Paleo already, without mainstream endorsements, are a creative, powerful, intelligent group, and can change the world for the better if we keep applying ourselves.

In 2013, I would become one of the best in the world at meeting people for the first time, and leaving a lasting impression.

I am a successful networker/socializer and consider myself "very good" in this department. But we all know there is a huge gulf between "very good" and "amazing". I would like to become exceptional at making a rapid a connection with anybody in any setting, and leave a lasting impression on them. This would be valuable in so many ways. (Side note: 2 years ago I met Tim randomly at a party in San Francisco, and had a pleasantly quick, empty, forgettable chat- exactly the kind of thing I want to learn how to not repeat in future when meeting great people).

I would approach acquiring this skill by reading books on the subject and practicing recommendations, researching and imitating the world class, and experimenting by isolating variables (e.g. dress, common topics of discussion, how I introduce myself etc), changing them and recording the results.

I love to paint and people love and buy my paintings. I could do this. I need to do this.

But . . .

I have a “successful” very small business that has the proverbial metaphorical gun against my head. This is no 4HWW – more like 60 – 70 HWW. That’s a lot of gun time! It is a business requiring a lot of specific knowledge, some of which a person needs before I hire them and some of which they can only learn from me. I usually have 1 or 2 employees and I can usually work remotely if it is not one of my busy months. I might be able to outsource some work and automate some through technology. I definitely need to tech up (haven’t had time to keep up like I would like – haven’t had time for much of anything). Theoretically I could sell it or have someone else run it but getting there is a long process and I have a serious time problem . . . no time to save time!! I have been in business for 21 years. There is much I like, even love, about it but I want to think about retiring or at least becoming much less involved – 4 hours per week would be nice. How to get the horse in front of the cart? I'd be a world class learner. I'd master the art of internalizing basics quickly, and seeking appropriate challenges for my current level. At higher levels I'd shorten the time spend att the dreaded plateau, where no skill gains are noticed.

The techniques I would master are finding crucial sub-skills for 80-20 leverage, practicing those skills in isolated and challenging ways, and maximizing direct feedback by measuring everything and getting guidance from teachers appropriate to my level.

A fascinating question. I'm going to enjoy putting the same question to friends.

I initially thought about quantum mechanics (despite being a biologist I've always been intrigued by high level physics) but the desire that percolated after a time in my thoughts was linguistics. I'm bilingual and can appreciate the extent of nuance lost in translation as well as the richness of culture, history, learning, and the social and commercial opportunities that are possible with the level of communication that fluency in another language enables. So the answer to the first part of the question is the ability to learn another language at a very high level of competence.

The answer to the second part of the question, however, is what I suspect you're probably most interested in. It certainly is the more intriguing.

During exam preparation (in what seems like eons ago now) I did develop a methodology for rapidly absorbing vast amounts of information in very short periods of time. It involved mind maps, mnemonics, repetition, exercise, chewing gum, stimulants, talking aloud to one self, short sleeps, short breaks, a low carb diet and a multi-sensory immersion in the topic. It worked but I couldn't have anyone around me during this period, or take calls or interact in any way.

In effect, I entered a hyper-vigilant, hyper-focused state that was difficult to maintain but enabled rapid learning. There was one other proviso, the material preparation was a key factor in that it had to be 'processed' in a way that made it easy to assimilate, i.e. learn. The processing involved something like breaking information down into singular concepts that could be linked into pre-existing knowledge.

In short, the material was prepared and then I would enter into an appropriate state to learn it. Sort of like the mastication, digestion and absorption of information. And that, I hope, forms the answer to the second part of your question.

I'd be a world-class professional basketball player. By that, I mean signing a contract with the NBA or very high-level team overseas. At minimum, I'd settle for a A or B level contract with the NBA Developmental League.

Currently I've already: - Developed a 40+inch vertical and speed to match - Hired a skills development coach - Played minor league - Been contracted with the NBA Developmental League (undrafted) - Practice meditation, self-hypnosis, etc - Working on lucid dreaming so I can improve waking performance

I feel the 2 pieces I'm missing are 1)Solid Connections and 2)Unwavering Confidence (Ali-Style)... Given that the season has started, if I had a gun to my head, I'd probably walk on to a practice unannounced and start practicing with the team.

Here’s my idea and like many of the other posters here have said: I’m going to do it with or without you.

Mastering Relationships How can I build the best relationships with my girlfriend, mother, father, brother, boss, co-workers, coach, teammates, and friends?

How can I learn to make new relationships? How can I learn to strengthen/hack the relationships that I have to make them more productive and more efficient? How do I evaluate my relationships to know if they are working or need to be ended?

As a 30-year old man, I’m happy with my job (4HWW) and making great progress on my body (4HB). It’s time to address the relationships in my life. Gun to my head, I would go back to the experts and re-read the business books I’ve read on the topic. I would add in some more personal life oriented books. I would take notes. I would start to journal or blog every day on the reading and my progress. I would take long vacations to where my family lives and with my girlfriend with the intent of strengthening relationships. I would attempt to talk to at least one stranger a day.

How to talk to strangers. How to make new friends. How to pick the 5 people you want to have the most influence on your life.

How to manage a long-term relationship with a significant other as it hits important milestones. It’s time to go beyond casual dating and the 4HB female orgasm.

How to rebuild the relationships with siblings and parents that we so often neglect in our college years.

How to build trust with clients, co-workers, and managers.

This is perhaps a different spin from other goals on this thread. It's true that I'd also like to be a good rock climber and a good Capoeirista but those things are secondary.

With a gun to my head it'd still be tricky.

Yes, I'd have an easier time remembering that my more worldly goals are more temporary.

Still, I'd be likely to try more extreme measures to become a saint when those might not be appropriate. Yes, some are called to be reclusive hermits. Some are called to be like Blessed Mother Theresa and going to desolate places to tend the dying. But some are called do the small things of a seemingly mundane life with love and excellence.

Vividly attentive prayer and focus on human relationships would be the main things. I would not be afraid to be honest with other people about what matters most to me. My learning and entertainment consumption would be more guided by my worldview. If sacrifices were necessary (fasting, giving up certain things) I would embrace them. I would spend more time discerning if I was being called to family life. I would pursue that in ways that I shun right now (like going out dancing).

Sorry to the folks this offends. That is not my intent, and I know there are many who disagree with faith perspectives in general or in particular. This isn't an argument, it is simply my honest answer to the question.

I'd choose to become world-class at just getting things done...at having way more bias toward action. I'm great at planning, organizing, thinking, studying, creating, etc....but when it comes to just all-out DOING, and doing the most important things, I still trip myself up much more often than I'd like.

In 2013 I will be a world-class information architect. If I had a gun against my head, I would do nothing different, because I believe that doing to get most of your life should be the default mode. I tell what I am actually doing:

I use a hypertextell reference system that act as a artificial intelligence called "Zettelkasten" (German). I tweaked a system that is the common trait behind most hyperproductive information architects (e.g. Hegel, Luhmann, Goethe)
I shedule my time strictly from 7:30am to 10:00pm and devote this time to my goals. Saturday evening and part of sunday I see my familiy
I train mostly twice a day for an hour per session to give my current project credebility and test my hypothesis. I seek for being the best physical being I can be and aiming for the world record in pull ups.
I write one post a week for my life and philosophical blog to share my spiritual and rational thoughts on life to give back.
I do yoga and meditation every morning to ground my emotional life.
I eat six days on a strict diet. It is mostly paleo with some tweaks from perfect health diet and my own experiment and research. Sunday I eat as I want to.
Everything I do I try to modify so that won't only have short term effects but have also potential long term benefit. I try to accumulate my knowledge in a stock that has a reinforcement loop (Meadows - Thinking in Systems)

I would be a World Class Inspirational Old Fart!! (There should be a medal for whomever gets there!)

I am 59, obese, with a handful of health issues that would cause most to trip up a little, mostly when you realize you're no longer the 30 year old god you thought you were. ("Thought" being the applicable fantasy word here.) Oh the mind games we can play on ourselves!!

I discovered Paleo this past spring, and haven't looked back. Not too bad for someone who thought nothing of downing 5 or 6 donuts at a sitting and then dinner an hour or two later, mostly to fool family members into thinking you we're eating right.

The gun already is at my head. Three years ago we buried my Mum, who passed away from suites of complications brought on by obesity, and a singular unwillingness to change lifelong habits. Two months later, and for the first time in my long and lazy life, I joined a gym. Through the years to today, I tried "WW" only to watch weight continue to pile on. I did Atkins, but not knowing that the reason it made me sick was an allergy to eggs.

3 years, 30 lbs down, and several diets later, I'm exercising a little every day and finally finally ecstatic with a diet of Paleo foods.

I have 100 more to go - and figger that will take about a year.

Worth a medal, huh?

That's an easy one Tim. I would want to be a world class surfer. I have surfed for 23 years and it is one of the great pleasures life. However, the limiting factor in being able to catch lots of waves and surf in technical and challenging conditions is surfing ability.

If I could be anything I would be a world class blogger. Being a world class blogger would provide me with the geographical and financial leeway to live the life I’ve always dreamed of. There are so many things I want to do in this life, but like most people because of the "real world" I live in I feel I am incapable of doing so. My blog would center on targeted periods of me becoming “awesome”. Think of what you did Tim with becoming a champion dancer. I would follow in your footsteps and choose things that I am extremely interested in, and used targeted periods of intensive learning to become highly proficient in them. Along the way I would record my trials and tribulations on my blog. I think this could be a highly successful concept. I really have wanderlust, and being a great blogger would allow me to see the world, support my soon to be wife, and spend more time with the people I care deeply about. The issues I have with accomplishing this is I am never satisfied when I write anything, and I’m hesitant to invest so much time in something that might fail when I already have so little spare time between wedding planning, work, and other commitments.

Goal: Become A World-Class Speaker

I have a lot of information to share but my spoken delivery is subpar. How I will attack the goal to become world-class in 2013:

First, I identify the elements that make a fantastic speaker. I do this, by studying great speakers and breaking down what they do, I read books about speaking and look at other material.

Second, I analyze at what level I am. I record my speaking and ask people to judge it. Then I look at the all the elements necessary for good speaking and find the ones that I need to improve in most. I consider those and rate them for importance. Next, I research the best methods to learn those elements. I’m not afraid to enter other fields. So, eg. I’d take acting classes to learn about presence.

Third, I start working on the element I need to improve in most and that carries the strongest importance. It also has to be something that I can train in any speech and is not specific.

Fourth, I train speaking everyday and keep myself accountable by making a big red cross on a year calendar daily. I then set the goal to not break the chain of crosses. This visualizes my daily practice and motivates me to not break the momentum.

Trading.

Professional grade trading capabilities can produce 6 figures per week via funding/backing through a trading arcade for example. With money you can finance an education in anything else you want to be world class in, regardless of area, because money can buy contacts, influence, people and thus knowledge, education and skills. Gun to my head already happened, I've looked into it and am trying to put in time and practice, attending lessons from people who actually do this for a living. The best way to learn is from the people who have learned through failure and trial to succeed and are actually capable of putting it into words and teaching it, too.

But Tim, I would much rather you write a book on your experiences with pickup, dating and the almost-made-up-sounding "testosterone aura" from the 4h body sex machine chapter. Would be much more interesting than all the already established pickup guru bullcrap that you never know if it is marketing or staged or numbers game or what.

I also would love to have non-nuts based diet tips for people who want to build testosterone naturally, but have (nut and egg) allergies. And a rewrite that clears up whether you really took Robbs advice about Beans etc not being healthy and converting to a more truly paleo diet approach.

For the people who want to lose shyness and be speakers: Start cold approaching strangers, do confrontation exercises, lose your fear gradually and practice. Within few weeks you can make huge leaps and bounds if you just actually try it. For the additional layer of motivational speaking: Find out what you're passionate about and why. You will have a hard time convincing someone of something you're not convinced of. Nothing speaks stronger than heart. Channel it, focus on transfer and your content, being in the moment as opposed to audience, self and awkwardness. Sounds too simple? That's a limiting belief. It can be that simple.

Why?

Because I love the thought of being able to play the piano but was put off when I was age 11 by a piano teacher who bored me into learning theory, sucking my intrigue and enjoyment of mashing keys and creating cool melodies. Each lesson was a painful introduction to doh-re-me. After badgering my dad to send me to the piano lessons I told him I wanted to quit. And since then I haven't touched a piano.

Learning from teachers who can break things down into small chunks and keep each chunk engaging is what I'll be looking for. Specifically, those who have taught adults from scratch and have had them playing in concerts/national/competitions in a short period of time.

I'd first find the 'top 10 best piano teachers' via a google and gather recommendations of piano teaching methods on piano related forums + books.
I'd interview the teachers and ask about their experience in teaching kids as well as adults.
I'd ask how they taught and arrange a 30-60 minute lesson with each one to assess whether or not I'd be bored or excited with their teaching methods and material.
I'd then settle with one teacher.
Finally, I'd organize a public performance (probably a lounge bar because I'm envious of the dude who plays the piano in that environment) where I'd have to play three songs (each of which testing some specific piano playing skill) as a target to reach and highlight the achievement of my 'world class pianist' goal.

This is a no brainer everyday I wake up and try to be the best version of me, this has helped me achieve so much already. Leading me down a road of discovery and learning.

Its made me a world class computer programmer who has mastered multiple computer/system based disciplines. My drive to be a great programmer and software engineer has enabled me to start a company which has been extremely challenging and involving more learning.

All this technology and business has a price (i.e major brain drain). To clear my head I play golf, tennis and take long walks.

If I could become world-class at anything it would be public speaking. I have so many great ideas that I want to communicate more effectively. As a business leader, husband and mentor being able to communicate is the one skill I would love to be world-class at.

Being world-class at public speaking is subjective. As it involves having something interesting to say and finding a group of people that are interested in listening. It also involves discovery of quality material and interesting stories. Assembling the content in a way thats engaging, and speaking with character and conviction.

Being world-class at public speaking to me is about communicating in a way that engages my audience and allows me to interpret complex material in a way thats interesting even if the subject of the material is something the audience would not be familiar with. Thats challenging too.

So once I have the material I have to speak. I stutter and I have worked at it in the past few years. Most times its not very noticeable but a little nerves make it challenging for me, it also makes me nervous about talking.

I'll probably get down-voted for this, but I'd like to be world class at making money via passive income. I'm not a Ferrari and caviar kind of guy, so it's not about excess with me. It's about enabling me to break the tight coupling between hours at a desk and money earned, thereby allowing me to pursue, without restriction, those things I am most passionate about: Traveling, time with my family, cooking, reading, continuous learning, and health. I want to focus on these things whole-heartedly, without the encumbrance of spending most of every day behind a desk. Some of my goals are to work closely with an architect to design a home from the ground up, and to have a sizable garden producing a large variety of fresh fruits/veggies. Sure, these goals are obtainable through years of hard work and saving, and moving to North Dakota, but that's not the point, and I think Tim gets that.

I agree with a few other posters that mastering "communication/speaking" would be a great skill to have, but ultimately making money is where my vote goes.

I would become world class in Spanish. I live in Southern California. I travel south of the border (South & Central America and Mexico) quite often. So I have no excuse not to be fluent already.

Anyways, I am going to focus on 1) most common spoken words/phrases in English, 2) most common words/phrases in Spanish to help get a majority of the conversational Spanish in tact. Then, I need to submerge myself with Spanish speakers (going to Mexico next month for a bit) to hard core practice both listening and speaking.

Spend more quality time with my kids: Not just out the back pushing them on the swing whilst checking Facebook or how the stock market is looking.
Make an effort to create new, exciting experiences with them at least weekly: Do something unusual or different from the norm, as a family. Give them something that may be a lasting memory, not just sitting on the couch watching the Simpsons again.
Talk to my kids and be interested: Try something outside the usual "how was school today"..."Oh you didn't do anything. That's good." Caution - if your kids aren't used to it then don't expect too much in the beginning.
Be a good role model: The old "do as I say, not as I do" doesn't really cut it.
Stop being too busy to do ....: If they are still young which my kids are, do this stuff now because once they get more independence as teenagers hanging out with Dad won't seem like a great idea. Unless, of course, you have built a rock solid relationship in the formative years.

World Class competitive TRAIL RUNNER! I'd love to be able to travel the world as an elite SPONSORED athlete but it is the ultra distances that get all the glamour and cash money prizes. I AM ON MY WAY to working up to Ultras one competitive distance at a time. My goal is to place top 100 in The North Face Endurance Challenge Championship in SF Half Marathon on DEC 2 2012 then I will train for the same but the Marathon next year and if I reach an as yet unset goal then I'll do the 50k, then the 50mile and ultimately the Western States 100miler! I have it all mapped out and going Paleo this spring has shaved a minute or more off of my splits. Ran a 10:06 last year and testing out the mountains on a 9 miler i ran a flat 9! So it is obvious that my nutritional strategy is working because I trained just as hard last year only this year I am seeing phenomenal results. More and more I am realizing that this is they key to everythine else.

Happiness, health, financial success, learning new skills, freeing time.

These things all require the ability (and time) to think clearly in a sustained manner and find (or create) a way to get what you want or accomplish your goal at any given time.

I'd be a world class peacemaker. With an 11 year old boy and 9 year old twin boys, there is always a war of something. If I had the answers to make each of them happy all the time, which includes trying to come up with meals 7 days a week that everyone loves, including my husband and myself, then we would be able to have more memories of fun rather than fighting. In 2013 I'd love to become a World Class Healer. There are too many follks that I see every day, and millions I'll never know, who desparately need healing in this land.

Some years ago, my Da survived 2 bouts with cancer (1st prostate, then colon 3 years later), came through surgery and radiation with flying colors both times. After a clean bill of health for more than a decade, he checked into the hospital with a prolonged case of hiccups (yes, dumbass hiccups!). He died from iatrogenic causes in less than 24 hours. Nobody should die from medical treatment for hiccups in an American hospital, EVER.

A few weeks ago, Sharon Osbourne (yes, that one), a smart, tough broad who managed to make sure that Ozzie thrived in the music business for more than 4 decades, announced that she'd secretly had a PROPHYLACTIC DOUBLE MASTECTOMY last summer!! Because she'd fought (and beaten) colon cancer a decade ago and because a doctor did a test that said she has the "breast cancer gene", she let some butcher slice off both of her HEALTHY breasts to avoid getting cancer. And she's NOT the first one to fall for the okey-doke!

ABC news offered this blurb on the whole debacle on 11/5/12:

“As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought, ‘The odds are not in my favor’,” Sharon told the magazine. “I’ve had cancer before and I didn’t want to live under that cloud. I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy.” Women who have the “breast cancer gene” have mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, according to the National Cancer Institute. Normally, the genes are tumor suppressors, but a blood test can reveal that they don’t function properly. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology revealed that more women were choosing to have double mastectomies, removing both the breast with cancer and the other healthy breast. The study found that the rate of the procedure, called a contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, more than doubled between 1998 and 2003. Although the study author said the preventative surgery did not decrease cancer risk, women said they did not regret their decision to remove their healthy breasts. Several other celebrities have opted for double mastectomies in the past, including Christina Applegate and Kathy Bates."

Anyone who made it through high school biology knows that genotype doesn't determine phenotype. We carry many genetic markers that may never be expressed physically in our bodies, so having a 'faulty BRCA gene' (& I'm not even sure I believe there is a 'breast cancer gene') doesn't mean you're going to get breast cancer. But if rich White women like Sharon Osborne, who can afford the best medical care available here or in Europe, are being convinced to lop of their breasts as a preventive measure, then what chance do all us Regular Janes have of making it to old age in one piece? How are we supposed to Fight The Powers That Be when the most privileged women are throwing money at anything with a pink ribbon on it and and lining up to have themselves sliced up like prosciutto?

WTF IS GOING ON IN THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN AMERICA?! Why aren't millions of women screaming at the top of their lungs about this everywhere they go, every damn day? What about the physicians' Hippocratic Oath: ...I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous. I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel.** How is it that those who have taken such a pledge to treat and Help, Not Harm their patients have become executioners on the installment plan, slicing our lives away one organ at a time?

And because medicine (surgery in particular) is still dominated by men, you'll note that we have yet to hear about any MAN being convinced to 'prophylactically' remove his prostate or testicles or any other body part because some blood test said he had a cancer gene.

Now, I get to watch Robin Roberts, a newscaster I have admired for years, killing herself slowly with chemo & radiation, The Very Same Treatment Protocol That Obviously Failed To Cure Her (Breast) Cancer in 2007! If she'd taken her car to a mechanic to be fixed and it broke down again after the repairs were done, Robin would have better sense than to bring her car back to that mechanic again! Yet this beautiful, intelligent, accomplished Sister, who now has MSD (myelodysplastic syndromes), a collection of hematological diseases that cause abnormalities in the blood-forming tissue in the bone marrow (basically a form of lukemia), has let some doctor convince her that the same immune-destroying poisons they used to 'treat' her breast cancer before will somehow cure the lukemia those poisons have now caused.

How is that anything but a big, steaming pile of CRAZY?

God gives every animal on this planet an immune system to fight against infections, pathogens, toxins, poisons and yes, cancers. How did we get to be so stupid, so intellectually lazy, so distrustful of our own common sense, that we allow total strangers who don't live in our homes, eat at our table, talk to us on a daily basis, share in our lives enough to know anything meaningful about our habits, how do we let these strangers Who Charge Us Exhorbitant Fees For Their Services convince us that poisoning our natural immunity is the way to cure anything?

I stopped getting mammograms in 2008 after a harrowing experience with a false positive. Now, I'm not scared of getting any sort of cancer as long as I eat well and avoid deliberate radiation exposure as much as possible. I'm gluten-free for the most part (no celiac problems, I just know that I do better avoiding grains). Ninety percent of time time (unless I'm eating at a restaurant or someone's home) I prepare my own meals. I eat grassfed beef & cheeses, organic fruits & veggies, milk, eggs & meat meat from pasture-raised animals. The thing is, I'm currently unemployed so I really can't afford to buy that stuff. But unemployment = no health insurance and poor people can't afford to get sick in a country with a profit-based healthcare system. If the choice is between paying the electric bill or buying healthful groceries, I'll chose groceries. But try convincing the people around you that paying 3 times the price for grassfed ground beef makes sense when you're unemployed! Job or not, at 52 I'm the only person I know who isn't on any routine medications, because thank gthe good Lord, I'm healthy.

And to hell with Obamacare! Nobody dies from a lack of medical insurance -- HEALTHCARE is what sick people need. And Hippocrates was exactly right: “Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food.” That is the first step to good health.

If I could become a World Class Healer and let folks just pay me what they felt my services were worth based on the results I helped they achieve (assuming the AMA wouldn't have me arrested), I could bless a whole lot of people in the same way that I've been blessed. This much I know is true: **There is a natural food, plant, herbal extract or essential oil out there that will cure WHATEVER ails you. But if you start with eating clean, natural, healthful foods every day and get some exercise routinely, you can get and stay healthy without going anywhere near a doctor's office.

The real trick is figuring out which foods are healthy and which are toxic in a country where the government won't require GM & CAFO foods to be labeled as such, so you know what the hell you're buying.

For 2013- World class in being the best (and most organized) Paleo Dad and husband that I can be.

Meaning that I would become much better in how I manage my time and energy such that I have lots of energy, stamina and free time to play with my little girl, plus be really there (!!!) for my wife. A big part of this is organizing myself around my little girls/family's time together. So going to gym/yoga,etc when she is in bed or at lunchtime during work. Also, as a family our major plan is to save for a house next year. So it will be important to balance saving and cutting down on expenses whilst eating/living a Paleo lifestyle. (eating well, going to gym,etc.)

Gun against my head:

Come up with financial plan for saving fixed amount every month.
Come up with simple meal plans and buy only based on these.
Only try new or more complicated dishes once a week at weekends.
Double everything and use leftovers for lunch.
Make breakfast and lunch the night before so as to free up time before work.
With Kombucha, make double the amount and only at weekends.
Continue smart exercise- weight train 1/2 per week and sprint the same. Lunchtime if possible.
Manage stress and meditate/yoga for say 15 mins most days.
Prioritize sleep over entertainment and staying up late.
Lastly, but most importantly, have fun everyday with my daughter and my wife!

Overall, Simplify Simplify Simplify. (even this list!!!!)

What do I really want; what's more important to me than anything else? CLARITY of INTENTION.

This means to align myself with the essential nature of the evolutionary impulse itself; that same impulse that burst forth as the big bang, that compels the body to procreate and the mind to innovate. This evolutionary impulse has no other motive than my own individual(and our collective) higher development; the wholehearted, passionate intention to exist, to develop, to become, to evolve. And, its only purpose is to create the future.

In that impulse, fear, doubt, hesitation, and obstacles don't exist. How could they? All it ever wants to do is move forward. Its both the path and the goal. When I engage wholeheartedly, the evolutionary impulse creates within me a liberating confidence in my ability to succeed.

Clarity of Intention - fueled by single-pointed will - is empowering. When I face everything and avoid nothing, no matter where I may be at any point in my development, Clarity of Intention places the ultimate outcome in my own hands. Hi Tim,

Not very original but I like the life style they live, so I would become a world class golfer.

With a gun to my head: Firstly, I would transfer some of what I have learned myself in relation to achieving a high level of success (I came first in my class in Oxford University) to the task. I would therefore, fully believe that the goal is achievable and never waste time doubting this belief or listening to others telling me that it could not be achieved. I know that ANYTHING can be learned. I would spend a lot of time learning the fundamentals of the swing. This would be done by finding an appropriate expert in golf swing mechanics and do anything that I had to, to convince him to teach me. I would follow, without question, the advice/technique that was required. I would never think that I understood the fundamentals or was able to implement the fundamentals before the expert informed me that he was happy that I had the fundamentals nailed.

With a gun to my head I would then do nothing else but eat, sleep and PRACTICE...checking back every now and again to make sure that I was not making any mistake with my fundamentals. I would work HARDER then anybody had ever worked before...

One thing to remember though Tim, if I had a gun to my head, I would be working/practising so hard, unless you happen to be hiding the fact that you are an expert in golf swing mechanics under some bushel of yours, I would have no time to take your call...

Tim,

I am a PhD student in clincial psych doing research and clinical work in attention, memory and cognitive rehabilitation. I have a few good ideas ruminating that I've begun to act on... but I struggle with promoting what I am doing, or that my work is any different from others.

If I were to pick one thing to become world class at in 2013, it would be a world class SELF-PROMOTER. I think the ability to stand out and say "hey, what I'm doing here is important" is fundamental to getting this kind of work funded and USED. There are many other things to want to be world class at, but without the ability to promote your work, especially when in is in service to the community, all is lost.

If I had a gun to my head to figure out how to do that? It'd be to surround myself with the people who believe anything is possible, and aren't hung up on "realistic" goals. So... that means I'd find a way to insinuate myself in to social circles that epitomize the ideal: Yourself, Michael Neill (Supercoach), and Tony Robbin's are the ones that pop up for me. I believe that kind of energy creates more energy.

You are 3/3 on writing life changing books. Thanks Tim!

After I wrote what’s below, I read in 4-hour Chef this crossed your noggin for similar reasons. So this will sound like a “me-too” but I’ll let it stand as it is.

Woodworking. It is where several impulses intersect.

WW can be situational monuments to life. You are layering aesthetics with utility, of course, but there are more psychological lines, personality and cultural insight. True of architecture but WW has more control from idea to finished work. You contribute to a defined living space by ideating life abstractions implemented concretely. To submit to a quality apprenticeship like all the old trades would be life altering. To learn and observe until that evasive 'magic' in the craft absorbs into one's identity.
If accomplished, WW is easily transferable to every domain - business/trade, family/personal, a service to friends or the broader community. There will always be need for quality carpentry.
Health. A sustainable method of mind-body coordination. Specifically the brain together with the hands never at a standstill, and I think of this in the long form of life story. I spoke recently with an octogenarian friend, the most active and sharp “senior citizen” I know. He spends his time helping others, problem solving, building, fixing, and reading up on the latest. Carpentry is one of his ongoing activities, mostly to the benefit of others. His best advice for those getting older is “Never stop working”. Which isn’t the same thing as not retiring, it just means always keep the mind and body involved or they will deteriorate rapidly like many of his age group. This inspired me beyond words.

I took woodshop as a kid, but now this fits things together that have already been there in my life: art/drawing, math/science, being physically engaged, producing materials that could benefit myself and others.

I want to be world class at having my students' eyes opened up to the wonderful world of learning. piquing a students' curiosity is one of the greatest feelings and helps inspire me.

Not sure if it is too late to answer this? I am nationally ranked long range shooter. I am on the US Rifle Team. I felt I was very fortunate if not lucky to make the rapid progree that I did in only acouple of years. 2011 brought me a natinal civilain record and a couple of championships. But I have come to a stand still. I still want to win the US Nationals at Camp Perry. I have done well but not a win. I need to break through this wall. I would want to deconstruct ice dancing the way that Tim deconstructed tango.

I started figure skating at the age of 30, and took it fairly seriously for the first two years, training far more than most other adult skaters, and even did a few adult competitions.

But I'd like to truly deconstruct ice dance, and use that deconstruction to acquire the "top 5 percenter" skill set within 6 months of skating full time, at the level of an Olympic athlete. That would be awesome sauce!
