Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? - PaleoHacks.com most recent 30 from http://paleohacks.com 2013-06-18T20:56:38Z http://paleohacks.com/feeds/question/16086 http://www.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/rdf http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? sherpamelissa 2010-12-14T14:00:04Z 2013-01-08T15:55:09Z
I am the only Paleo eater in my house. I am also the primary cook and grocery shopper. The likelihood of my family switching to my way of eating is slim to none. My husband is a "meat and potatoes" kind of person and thinks my food is weird. I don't have issues with having the bad food in my house. I've learned to control my eating and don't expect everyone to eat what I eat.

The question came up this weekend, while I did my Holiday Baking for friends and family. Despite the fact that I would not eat this type of food, I made cookies and caramel corn and toffee for my co-workers and family. It's a holiday tradition and they would be disappointed without it. I feel almost like I am poisoning them though, even if they are happy about it.

I think next year I may have to come up with some new gift ideas.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16087#16087 Answer by mari for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? mari 2010-12-14T14:20:03Z 2010-12-14T14:20:03Z
Nope. I won't get junk food when I go shopping. If my family wants to eat it, they can go get it. I go to wholefoods too, where that stuff would be quite expensive. I will make baked goods for friends on their birthdays though. I guess that's somewhat hypocritical.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16089#16089 Answer by Scott for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? However, if my family or friends bring something non-paleo then they can have at it.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16091#16091 Answer by Jodi for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? Jodi 2010-12-14T14:31:18Z 2010-12-14T14:31:18Z
I rarely make cookies or pastries for family anymore. No. 1, it's bad for them; and No. 2, I don't have the willpower to resist eating a ton of it myself. Your loved ones are getting lots of sweets this time of year from other sources, so they probably won't suffer if you cut back next year on your baking. Consider making less harmful treats, like spiced nuts or dark chocolate truffles (solid dark chocolate, heavy cream and butter).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16092#16092 Answer by Carl_Stawicki for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? I used to bake a lot, which I miss doing.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16095#16095 Answer by wjones3044 for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? wjones3044 2010-12-14T14:55:20Z 2010-12-14T14:55:20Z
I try to exert a positive influence on my vegetarian daughter (she's 10) when I cook for her. We make sweet potato fries instead of rice and beans. I substitute nuts for tofu (blech!).

I wouldn't bake brownies for her; however, she's getting to be a whiz in the kitchen. The other day she whipped up a batch of brownies by herself. I don't stop her. We talk about food a lot. Her mom jokes about how I'm crazy. But I'm not sure it's really a joke.

I hold out hope that things will change. In the meantime, I live by example.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16099#16099 Answer by TedB for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? So far in the past six months this soft sale of eatting bacon and eggs while they eat pancakes and French toast has helped me convert three friends.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16101#16101 Answer by Vrimj for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? I cook what I enjoy with some consulting on preferences. If they want something else they can make it. I did make egg nogg this weekend but I like the process :)

In sum, I cook what I enjoy. Either because I eat it or because the process itself brings me joy.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16103#16103 Answer by jpet for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? jpet 2010-12-14T16:11:34Z 2010-12-14T16:11:34Z
No. But if I am in a social situation where food is shared, I'll bring what I consider a "gateway" food like home made almond crackers with red pepper dip, or some veggies or some cookies I've made with walnuts and dates instead of flour and sugar. While the "paleolier-than-thou" folks might cringe at this and give me 1000 reasons while it's wrong, I've found that this is a great ice breaker and gets people asking questions about why I eat the way I do. And those foods are recognizable enough so that the entire concept doesn't seem completely unattainable or foreign, though I make it clear those foods are treats and my day-to-day diet looks much different.

I've had several friends convert completely, and a few more have started dabbling as they get their minds around certain concepts, like "fat is good for you" and "grains are not." My belief is that paleo the way it's defined and practiced today is about as close to a perfect diet for human beings, and the more people think about it, and more importantly, as they explore eating this way for themselves, the more evident that becomes, and the easier it is to adopt it. There is no need for a hard sell here.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16132#16132 Answer by James for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? Avoid the whole 'healthier for you' argument and go for the 'it tastes great and is a change from the standard ho hum stuff' argument. If it tastes bad, you've lost the battle before it's even started.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16134#16134 Answer by hemanvt for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? hemanvt 2010-12-14T21:33:18Z 2010-12-14T21:33:18Z
One thing I have found with talking paleo with non-paleo's it to not mention "low carb" or carbs at all. Just stick with the basics and talk up the amount of fatty foods you can eat, like bacon, burgers, steak, chicken skin, etc.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/16136#16136 Answer by stephthegeek for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? stephthegeek 2010-12-14T22:13:09Z 2010-12-14T22:13:09Z
No, and we have a fair amount of guests so it's often a bit amusing :) Luckily the food I cook and keep on hand generally isn't exactly unappealing diet food ("Hey, want some bacon and eggs?" "Would you prefer broccoli or zucchini with your steak?"). I don't think I know many vegetarians but I could probably even feed one of those if I thought about it.

Sometimes guests go out and get their own snacks or supplemental food but I don't change the way I generally operate. I try to provide alternatives for preferences though (like someone who is picky about veggies).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/16086/do-you-still-buy-or-cook-non-paleo-neolithic-foods-for-friends-and-family/171852#171852 Answer by Jules for Do you still buy or cook non-Paleo / Neolithic foods for friends and family? Jules 2013-01-08T15:55:09Z 2013-01-08T15:55:09Z
I'm sort of feeling torn about this one too.. because knowing what I know about grains, in my opinion they are like poison and I certainly don't want to eat them, so why would I encourage others to eat them? I felt bad giving away some of my non-paleo foods after doing a lot of research and educating myself about it. It's as if to say "hey this is horrible stuff and I dont want it.. but you can have it!"

I also feel like this question is sort of like asking a vegetarian if they would buy and cook meat for non-vegetarians. If they don't believe its a good choice for themselves they likely wouldn't want to do it for others. Although vegetarians may have different reasons its usually a personal choice as is Paleo for me. I dont have to eat this way I could eat grains if I wanted to but I choose not to. I feel sort of confused on this one and I really don't know if I should bake the way I used to for others. I'd also have difficulty not eating any myself and I'd feel bad when I think about all the bad stuff I'm encouraging them to eat.

That being said I have a potluck coming up this weekend and I have been asked to make cake pops because I have a cake pop maker. It's going to be hard to bake a batch of 48 delicious balls of cakey goodness dipped in coloured chocolate without stuffing my face and feeling guilty about that impulsive decision later..
