What brand of Pasture Butter do you fancy?

There's lot of comments about pasture butter, but I am curious as to what brand is most popular across PaleoHacks.

Somehow, Kerrygold seems to have a very strong foothold. I'm not sure if it's cause it's just widely available or what but so many people trust that brand. I know on their site it says their cows are grass fed, but nowhere on their packaging does it claim "grass-fed", "pastured", or even "organic", which I think is rather strange.

Weigh in with the brand you use and let's see which one gets the most tally marks! I will wait for a bit to calculate the totals.

I use Kerry Gold simply because it is relatively widely available and I don't really have access to other more local sources.

The best pasture butter I've had is Smjor - which has the same non-local problem as Kerry Gold, but also takes everything good about Kerry Gold and raised it a level.

For anyone in Ontario looking for a good organic butter (which I presume is not-pastured because it doesn't mention it anywhere), check out L'Ancêtre butter. Still delicious.

I use Kerrygold because I can find it easily at Trader Joes, Costco and Sam's Club for a really reasonable price. Plus, it's yummy and the package is pretty. :)

I like Kerrygold (available, not expensive).

I like the way 20 packs of kerrygold fill the door of the refrigerator. Makes it look like a gold treasure. Which it is, of course.

I also like the face of the people who take a look inside my refrigerator... ;)

We actually did a side-by-side blind taste test of Kerrygold vs Organic Valley pastured the other day with the husband. And while I understand this is totally subjective, we found Kerrygold to be slightly superior: more smooth and creamy, while OV tasted more greasy and bland in comparison.

It might have been the salt ratio as well. We tried both salted kinds, and Kerrygold tasted a touch more salty.

Agree. Kerrygold is available and easy to find. Love Organic Valley as well but really only buy that if they are out of the Kerrygold. I trust both companies and they are both delicious.

No one else eats Smjor?? Truthfully, I find very little difference between butters. But one anonymous commentor says...

"I LOVE KerryGold...and I too did this little taste test just to see....KerryGold is truly an amazing butter -- and I will always buy it....but this Smjör is just in another league. When you go from Land-O-Lakes to Kate's (a great respectable organic butter) to KerryGold to Smjör -- then you've climbed the Butter Stairway to Heaven...."

What about Jack Kronk`s concers, if KerryGold´s cows really enjoy a livin on green and juicy grassland.

I also wonder that Kerrygold does not see the "pastured" lable as a marketing instrument and sales argument. There must be a reason for this...

Hands down, the best pastured butter that I've ever had is Trickling Springs Creamery (Chambersburg, PA). Then, it's a toss up between Kerrygold and my local raw butter which, interestingly, are the same price. My mother totally agrees with the TSC followed by Kerrygold, and reminds me every time I see her that she wants me to bring her 10 lbs of Trickling Springs the next chance we get to go to Chambersburg even though I bring her a half pound of Kerrygold almost every month. :-)

She's never had my raw butter, and neither of us has had Smjor. WoodStock Farms and Natural by Nature are good, but neither are totally pastured, but they're both cheaper so I buy them for bulk use.

The Amish Roll butter in my local Amish natural foods store looks yellow enough to be pastured, and it's a lot cheaper than the others, but I haven't asked yet if it's pastured. OV pastured butter isn't available in my area, and I've never seen Anchor butter.

ETA: We have a trip to TSC planned in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, I thought ya'll might like to see my local farm's raw butter. The raw butter is in the small container (I separate it so that I don't have to thaw it all at once), contrasted with a bar of Kerrygold. Sorry- I can't get it to load in my comment. I like Meyenberg goat butter.

This stuff is delicious. Whole Foods has it. I don't remember the price exactly, but it is around 5-6 dollars, which is much more expensive then cow butter :(

I got raw butter from the Amish guys once, $10 a pint/lb. Fucking nuts. So delicious, and practically orange. It also tasted like cheese, so, bonus.

During summer around here the Amish bulk stores sometimes sell local, pastured, homemade butter. When I see it I snap it up and put it in the freezer. Well-wrapped it keeps for months.

Humboldt Creamery pasture based butter. Their new packaging says "Pasture Based Butter" right on the front, although it doesn't show that in this picture here. I think we covered all the major brands, unless anyone else knows of another. I can't upvote this since it's my own answer but I use this brand regularly so I will add my own vote to the tally.

I live not an hours drive from where the kerrygold cows are pastured. It's next to an area known as 'The golden vale', so named for the incredibly lush pastures. It is definitely grassfed, with some hay in winter.

There is Amish butter available where I am. They have it at a local dairy where they sell their own unhomogenized milk, and cheeses but do not produce their own butter. I have not tried it yet but it is usually nice and yellow and there is no coloring listed in the ingredients so I have to assume it is at least partially grass fed. Any comments or info from anyone who has had it?

I use Kerrygold because it's super easy - you can find it at Costco when you don't have/ don't have time to find a local source. I feel like that's why most paleos do it as well :P

In Colorado I buy Organic Valley pasture butter in the green, foil package at Vitamin Cottage. I noticed my King Soopers now just started carrying Kerrygold.

I bought some Kerrygold (I live in England) and although it didn't used to say it was grassfed on the package, it does now! They are onto us.
