When did "YOU" know you were overtraining? I know what all the books say are signs of overtraining--but want to hear your own personal experiences.

This was a long time ago, when I was into long distance cycling. I learned my lesson. I was riding too many miles per week for too long a period of time.

I also began to see a creeping up of my fasting blood sugar and this showed me I had to shut it down. This occured from the rising cortisol setting off my sympathetic nervous system in mobilizing sugar from gluconeogenesis and the glycerol back bones of the lipolysis. Melatonin and complete darkness made the cure easy......and then I went to a VLC diet (really zero carb) for about 12 days until my fasting sugars went to baseline. Magically sleep returned and I know I was past the adrenal fatigue......during this time I upped my DHEA reflexively as well. I also paid attn to my muscles and soaked them in the hot tub while I drank alot of natural calm. Hope this helps.

I lift for a total of 10 muscle groups (upper + lower body), and after 6 weeks had to leave 4 of them out. Now I try to walk a few miles a few days per week, and I've cut back lifting to 2-3 days per week. I feel and look better.
