I really want to buy beef in the form of a whole cow (well, processed from a whole cow ideally). My friends all think it's too much money, or get hung up on the thought of eating a cow they know was butchered specifically for them, and don't want to do it.

I've found farms on eatwild that sell cows. Now I need to find people to buy one with (I'm thinking maybe 3 other people, about 1/4 cow a piece). Any idea on how to go about doing that? Or do you think it's better to just find a farmer who can handle finding other people? (Threads in the cowpooling tag I just found said this is possible.)

It's a great investment and I'd much rather eat meat that was butchered just for me than factory-farmed meat!

Farmers will sell halves and split sides (1/2 of a side) and handle finding the other people themselves. I always buy a half and then split it with a friend of mine. Typically, you buy your portion, pay the farmer for the hanging weight, then pay the butcher to process the cuts you want.

May be some venison next fall as well! It's a great time saver. Saves a little money, but really not that much - perhaps because we eat more!

I just finished the first version of a website that should help for these kind of things: it's mainly a collaborative directory of paleo resources, but also doubles as a platform to exchange within groups focused on a geographical area.

It's still early days and it is an alpha version right now, but if you want to check it out at www.hltribes.com, you can create a local group for your area, and hopefully find people interested.

I would be very interested in your feedback on the site, since it was designed for just such a use :-)
