I've been gluten-free for about 4 years, but have come around to the paleo way, I have a true wheat allergy and serious excema that I can clear if I avoid all grains "gluten-free goodies" and dairy. I've been slipping on the corn tortillas and dairy lately, so the excema is back, and I'm trying a whole 30 to help me along. Here's the deal, I'm starving even 30 minutes after breakfast, by 9am I'm holding myself back from raiding my lunchbox! I work full-time, the usual 8-5 deal, so breakfast is at 7am. I am also nursing a 10 month old (and a lot too, still no cycle, but he eats a lot of paleo food too). Breakfast is usually 4 eggs fried in oil (avocado or coconut), leftover veggies and a small handful of fruit (this morning was 4 strawberries) and a cup of black tea (only caffeine of the day). Eating more than 4 eggs seems extreme, but do I need more? What else could I eat? I'm also staving after I pump for baby at work, at llam and 3pm, so I get to eat lunch after the first pumping, and from 3pm on I'm STARVING. Can't figure out what to eat, and don't have time anyways since I spend my work breaks makeing babymilk.

Personal stats: 5'7 and umm...seriously curvy (230) and built like I belong on a sports team (wide shoulders, wide hips, hands are the same size as my 6'0 husbands).

P.S I hate fitday, it makes me feel like I have an eating disorder or something, so please don't suggest that! The whole point of the whole 30 is to get away from constant measuring food!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50866#50866 Answer by Levi for So freaking HUNGRY Levi 2011-07-11T16:34:30Z 2011-07-11T16:34:30Z
Would I be out of line to suggest that maybe it's the nursing? It's takes a serious amount of energy for your body to maintain itself AND and whole other human being. So I'm going to say it's probably normal to be really hungry until your baby is weaned.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50872#50872 Answer by Dave S. for So freaking HUNGRY Dave S. 2011-07-11T16:58:12Z 2011-07-11T16:58:12Z
Four eggs is only 300 calories and 28g protein. Oops, I forgot, you don't want to know that. But really, it's not a ton of food. Standard paleo rule is: Hungry? Eat!

If you don't want to eat more eggs, add some meat from the night before. As J. Stanton so aptly says: "If you need to eat a can of nuts or a brick of cheese, you didn’t eat enough meat."
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50874#50874 Answer by David Moss for So freaking HUNGRY David Moss 2011-07-11T16:58:42Z 2011-07-11T16:58:42Z
4 eggs is very little nutritionally, so I'm not surprised you're hungry immediately afterwards. I eat six at a time simply because that's the box size they come in, but I could easily eat more. 4 eggs is 25g of protein and 300 calories (plus whatever fat it's cooked in). That's equivalent to about 3/4 of a chicken breast in protein (plus 150 calories of fat) or 5 ounces of beef. Just for the sake of argument, if you were going to eat solely eggs for your protein source, you'd need close to 20 (which would be 126g protein).

Also without wishing to denounce fruit as an intolerable evil, it may be that snacking on 4 strawberries is only making you more hungry (disturbing leptin, getting you in the mood for sugar without satiating you etc).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50876#50876 Answer by Ambimorph for So freaking HUNGRY Ambimorph 2011-07-11T17:05:27Z 2011-07-11T17:05:27Z
I wouldn't worry about trying not to eat more than some set amount. If you're hungry, eat! If you're hungry, that means your body wants to use the energy. I don't see what advantage there would be in ignoring or fighting that.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50878#50878 Answer by Rogue Nutritionist for So freaking HUNGRY Rogue Nutritionist 2011-07-11T17:11:12Z 2011-07-11T17:11:12Z
Nursing does take a lot of energy, but that shouldn't mean you need to starve. Maybe you need to snack more....fruit and nut or seed butter mid-morning could be just what you need...would you mind telling us more of what you eat...an entire typical day? Don’t despair. I had a really hard time with weight loss when I nursed both of my babies, and nursed each for about two and half years, after which weight loss was easier. You have a lucky baby to have a mama so committed to health!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50890#50890 Answer by mamameredith for So freaking HUNGRY mamameredith 2011-07-11T17:47:51Z 2011-07-11T17:47:51Z
I probably phrased that wrong, I'm not against knowing the macronutrient value of my food! I'm just against tracing every single morsel, and having Fitday demand more and more info, it drive me nuts. What I eat in a day? Last night it was italian chili, large bowl (marinara meat sauce-ground beef, with lots of roasted summer squash in it, and LOTS of olive oil), for breakfast it was 4 eggs fried in a looonnng drizzle of avocado oil, summer squash fried in same, the 4 strawberries, tea, and a big spoonful of coconut butter on my way out. Lunch, big bowl of mexican pot roast meat w/mashed butternut squash (pyrex bowl holds 4 cups, was probably 3 cups in it, 1/2 and 1/2) with a side cup of guacamole, and a peach, a coconut butter ball (coconut butter mixed with shredded coconut and formed into balls). There was a not-whole-30-approved square of dark chocolate (lindt 70%) at my desk too, it was what I could eat without heat or utensils. The whole 30 has thrown in my face how dependent on dairy I was, I could eat a hunk of cheese at my desk after pumping, cheese on my eggs, cream in my tea, and I used to have bacon with my eggs too, but that is not whole 30 okay-for-everyday. Ice cream after dinner. I hate being hungry after dinner, going to lay down and nurse the baby, and knowing I've got 3 nursings to go of being very very hungry before my unsatisfying dairy and bacon free breakfast, it's enough to make me dream about whole pints of ice cream. Not sure I can do 30 days people! Except I got gluten "dosed" a couple of weeks ago and my skin itches like mad and I have to go dairy free for a while and let it heal. Can I say how happy I am this community is taking the extended breastfeeding as a given? You guys are great! My baby gets boob until he's done, at least another year =)
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50893#50893 Answer by Josh for So freaking HUNGRY Josh 2011-07-11T17:59:25Z 2011-07-11T17:59:25Z
I am a guy, 6'3" 280ish, and for breakfast I had 3 eggs and 10 ounce of Naked Red Berry Juice. Nothing else all day, and while I am waiting on my salad for lunch to show up, I am not suffering. I will say it takes a while to get used to it, but if you can go 3 days of no cheating at all, you can do it! Thats about the time it takes me to get my body to kick all the cravings and reset back to normal. The first day I ate about 3000 calories of paleo food (mostly chicken and fruit, with some eggs). Day 2 I ate the same, but about 2500 calories. Day 3 I ate 2000 calories and I am holding that while I cut weight. I have no idea what nursing would do to me.

Good Luck!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50947#50947 Answer by Kaz for So freaking HUNGRY Kaz 2011-07-11T20:40:07Z 2011-07-11T20:40:07Z
This is totally random -- I know everyone is different -- but what if you took out the coconut butter (and traded it in for another treat)?

I swear, every time I eat it, it gives me a sense of ravenous hunger even though I just ate. I've since dubbed it 'false hunger' and either I ignore the delicious siren call of the coconut or I give in and ride out the "hunger" pains.

A couple of other foods do this to me, too, like raw carrots and raw apples. I don't know if it's an intolerance or what, but perhaps it's something you can look into? Oh, and like everyone else said: eat more food! Good luck! :)
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/50954#50954 Answer by UncleLongHair for So freaking HUNGRY UncleLongHair 2011-07-11T20:55:27Z 2011-07-11T21:12:15Z
You haven't said how long you've been on the strict Paleo diet, nor what your goals are. Are you trying to lose weight? You mention trying to clear up eczema, anything else? That might help get better answers.

When my wife had our kids, she was advised to eat another 500-1000 calories or so per day when she was pregnant, and then ANOTHER 500 or so additionally when she was breast feeding. I know you don't want to obsess about calories, but that was nearly double her normal calorie intake. That can be a lot of food, in fact she had trouble even eating that much (she eats slowly) and supplemented with protein shakes and the like.

Many women in your situation are trying to lose their pregnancy weight, so running a slight calorie deficit might help with that. Please don't take this the wrong way, but at 5'7" 230# you could probably lose 20-25% of your body weight and feel much better.

I would definitely make sure that you're eating enough while you are breastfeeding though, if you cut out too many calories you might start to impact your milk supply. Just eating enough might be more important than having a perfect diet, at least initially. Breast feeding can be a great way to help you lose the weight (and is part of the beautiful symbiosis between mother and child) but you don't necessarily want to overdo it. Based on what you say you're eating, I think you aren't at risk for undereating.

Some people have trouble feeling "full" on this diet at first, especially if they had been used to eating lots of starches, because things like bagels and bread are filling even though they aren't very nutritious. For the first week or two there can be an adjustment period where your body is getting used to eating more protein and fat and less carbs, and isn't getting the insulin kick it is used to. This usually goes away before long as your body adapts.

Speaking for myself, when I go 100% Paleo and low carb, it is an appetite suppressant. I can now easily skip any meal (and often do), and often eat only once per day, without even noticing it much. I'm just not that hungry. By the time dinner rolls around I have often had only a few 100 calories, really just snacks.

To help feel satisfied, you should eat foods high in fat (sounds like you are), and wait 15-20 minutes after a meal to see if you're really still hungry or if your body is just craving that insulin spike.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/51149#51149 Answer by mamameredith for So freaking HUNGRY mamameredith 2011-07-12T16:11:25Z 2011-07-12T16:11:25Z
The answer, I stopped the whole 30. It was just too much. I went back to what had been working before, minimizing the dairy. Bacon with breakfast, eggs fried in said bacon grease, and 1/2 a sweet potato with butter, and tea of course, minus the cream. I'm eating my homemade beef jerky, maple syrup be damned! That was 5 days of unhappiness. I'll just avoid grains totally, eating corn tortillas (made in same factory as flour ones) was a roll of the dice I plain lost. Thanks everyone!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/51595#51595 Answer by Jan for So freaking HUNGRY Jan 2011-07-14T14:34:25Z 2011-07-14T14:34:25Z
I am in complete agreement with the prevailing sentiments here about more calories in general, more fat, reconsidering fruit (at least in the morning),etc. So here's my addition: with the cravings and eczema, has anyone ever suggested you get a candida test? What you're doing should help a lower intestine yeast overgrowth, but if it's there and established, it might need an extra nudge. Some antifungals are safe for breastfeeding moms but there are other options too. It sounds like eczema has been an ongoing issue but candida can certainly make it all worse. With the hormone soup (then subsequent nosedive) pregnancy causes, candida is not uncommon at all. Just a thought. Good luck and congrats on what sounds like a healthy 10-month old.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/51597#51597 Answer by jared for So freaking HUNGRY jared 2011-07-14T14:44:46Z 2011-07-14T14:44:46Z
I know that if I eat ANY sugar in the morning (fruit or otherwise) I am hungry within an hour or two. It does make you hungrier than usual. But, even though you need more calories when breastfeeding, the same rule applies: if you're starving an hour after breakfast, it means you didn't eat enough at breakfast. I'd try adding some kind of meat to the eggs, and skipping the fruit. Fruit is sugar, and you don't want that in your system first thing in the morning. Go with good old protein and fat.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/53460#53460 Answer by Becky for So freaking HUNGRY Becky 2011-07-24T00:41:29Z 2011-07-24T00:41:29Z
Snacks are key and sweet potatoes are great. I noticed when I went on my elimination diet I was STARVING! at first. I think it was withdrawals from my food intolerances. If you are craving something strongly, you may be allergic. I had to quit coconut because of these abnormally strong food cravings and hunger pangs. Cashew butter was my savior at first, I had a spoonful or two whenever I was hungry. This will pass for you and your new way of eating will eliminate any of your struggles with food. If you're eating paleo and breast-feeding, don't resist eating when you're hungry. Just make healthy choices and you'll be fine. Stick to pre-portions of nuts though, they're easy to overeat and have lots of Omega 6s that you want to limit.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/50865/so-freaking-hungry/53467#53467 Answer by Aughra for So freaking HUNGRY Aughra 2011-07-24T01:27:26Z 2011-07-24T01:27:26Z
I'm almost exclusively feeding a 7 month old 21 pound 28 inch long boy. So I totally get the hunger thing. 4 eggs may seem like a lot but it really isn't. I often will have two eggs and a 1/2 lb grassfed or CAFO hamburger or a large can of sardines or a few strips of bacon with 3 eggs. I cook the eggs in a full tablespoon of butter and if they are scrambled I add an extra yolk. I take in about 2000-2500 calories a day and have lost about 40 pounds in the past 6 months. The only times I've ever been hungry is when I'm not eating enough fat calories. Also, occasionally I feel the need to have some starch so I'll have a potato with lots of butter or a sweet potato. I don't do this often, though. I try to eat liver, lots of cod liver oil, and plenty of grassfed butter and coconut oil which I slather on my veggies. I've had a few plateaus but overall throughout this time I've been losing. Don't get hungry or you will give up.
