Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited - PaleoHacks.com most recent 30 from http://paleohacks.com 2013-05-20T00:24:50Z http://paleohacks.com/feeds/question/53823 http://www.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/rdf http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited paleoprimal 2011-07-25T21:29:16Z 2011-08-03T04:17:00Z
Before Paleo (january 2011) I was already on my own path to moving away from SAD foods I just didnt have a particular name for it. I think over the past 10 years or so I have become perceived as food snob of sorts. if you have a full family on all sides that eat SAD and althought they all came from "grandma's" ways of cooking and eating fresh and in season have all resorted to packaged this and that. They dont seem to rememeber what plain foods (not bland but not frankenfood) taste like. The family knows that I cant eat red meat due to and IBS issue that has been ongoing for 8+ years and that I prefer fresh (or perceived fresher) foods than MCNASTY, Booger King and Taco Smell, (our lovely names for such places).

If you go out to dinner do you ever feel guilty that because if you a more expensive place has been chosen? (i do realize the expense is relative...better food better health but if they arent eating paleo then they dont realize that concept)

I just keep trying to feed my family as close to Paleo as they will allow and keep trudging forward with myself trying to improve my food sources.

*edited to state that most of this was before paleo so even though i was stating that i wanted better food, i just wasnt losing weight....now that i am losing a little weight here and there it may be sinking in... They seem to like the challenge in addition to trying things on a new menu. I do live in NY so variety, at any price level, is very available. We're all pretty honest as well, so if cash is low then it's "nooooooo" and something else is found.

It's awesome that you're really working at keeping your family healthy and it sounds like you're a strong lady. When we rarely go out to eat, I try to go to locally owned places so that I can have better access to the chef or owner. Sadly, These places are often expensive. I felt so bad about this extra expense last weekend, that I didn't dare make a peep about the worm in my fish. (it was dead). My husband refuses to believe that organic food and grassfed meat is better, instead of reading all the articles/research I send him, he will just call me a snob and moan and complain everytime we go to the grocery store.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/53833#53833 Answer by Aughra for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited Aughra 2011-07-25T22:03:07Z 2011-07-25T22:03:07Z
No. I think some of them just think I'm a hypochondriac. And yes, we eat differently than pretty much everyone (we have friends at CrossFit that eat like us and it's SO nice to talk about food with them). Everyone else just thinks your nuts to spend so much money on food, yet they compliment us on how great we look! Yet they aren't willing to give up their fast food and crap.

Ultimately our physical appearance speaks for itself.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/53850#53850 Answer by Kelly for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited Kelly 2011-07-25T23:47:24Z 2011-07-25T23:47:24Z
I think people thought that way of me before I found Paleo, but for me its more an issue of food allergies, and cleanliness of food.

I don't make a big deal, I just don't eat if there is nothing there for me at the place they choose (rarely happens-except food courts).

I think people make a bigger deal out of it because it makes them uncomfortable. It does make things much easier, even despite some of us being veg*n, reformed veg*n, pescatarian, and paleo. My SIL is a nurse heavily involved in training med professionals about toxin and endocrine disruptor exposure in hospitals (including the food), and has a huge interest in quality of food, processing, preparation, storage and other issues. So even though we differ in diets, we can all find plenty to keep us happy at family picnics.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/53935#53935 Answer by Ali for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited Ali 2011-07-26T11:57:30Z 2011-07-26T11:57:30Z
I realized the other day that I am a food snob, lol. There are certain places I refuse to eat. Sure, I could find something to eat there, but quality has become #1 for me and I know these particular places are the lowest quality they can be while keeping their doors open.

If I am going out to eat, I am willing to pay a little more for better quality food.

Family and friends just think I'm a little strange. Oddly enough, friends are more accepting of my choices than family. I've even gotten a few friends to change some of their eating habits.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/54519#54519 Answer by Korion for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited Korion 2011-07-28T20:07:17Z 2011-07-28T20:07:17Z
My cooking is not cheap. I cook everything, I cook 3 times a day, and I buy quality beef and vegetables. My mother knows it's important to me as she notices I get really healthier and healthier. My father, sister and brothers all have that "I don't care about health" attitude and consider themselves healthy. Frequent farting, acne, obesity, ... show that is not the case.

Whatever I do to convince them my diet is very healthy, that I get rewarded for all the work I do (I'm 20, have to work hard to be able to pay all this, do all the shopping myself every day, all the cooking on my own after everybody else has eaten, I have exams, ...), they would probably be glad if I throw all the good, healthy things away.

Last time my father got pissed because I was cooking everything. He always tries to make me eat bread, fruit or nuts because he thinks it doesn't matter for immunity.

I don't think they see me as a food snob, but I do feel like it. I go to expensive places all the time to get what I need (organic stores, for example, are very expensive here, take for example extra virgin coconut oil).

That's why I work hard to get enough money. It's not easy being paleo, but it's a nice challenge and it has tons of advantages (no more farting, allergies reduced tremendously in one month, no acne, no smelling, sleeping great, ...).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/54521#54521 Answer by hemanvt for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited hemanvt 2011-07-28T20:13:31Z 2011-07-28T20:13:31Z
I consider myself a food snob, so i would say definitely and I don't mind. My close family and friends understand that I feel better when I eat a more Paleo-friendly diet. I, like yourself, have suffered some past IBS issues. These have been almost completely resolved after I started eating Paleo. My friends and family realize this and try to accomodate it and accept it.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/53823/does-the-rest-of-your-family-or-friends-consider-you-a-food-snob-now-edited/55630#55630 Answer by Coryann for Does the rest of your family or friends consider you a food snob now? *edited Coryann 2011-08-03T04:17:00Z 2011-08-03T04:17:00Z
I am fairly new to paleo, but have been gluten free for close to 2 years. A month after going gf with impressive results, I mindlessly ate a piece of bread at a restaurant and didn't realize it until an hour and a half later feeling like I had been run over by a Mack truck and a few other reactions, therefore my self diagnosis. Since then, I occasionally have had friends and family infer that being gluten free was just a diet and that I could eat food containing it if I wanted to. After explaining to them my body's reaction to it the times I have accidentally consumed it, like the restaurant incident or if I've neglected reading labels, they generally understand.
