How has this diet been for those who have it done it a minimum of a year? What do you like about it, result wise, and what results haven't you liked?

Not exaggerating. I did do VLC for a while there and that is not for me. However, 2 years ago I came into the 'paleo' community after about a year of eating a high-calorie mostly-vegetarian grain-based weight gain diet. I had successfully gotten my weight up, but I had a recent diagnosis of IBS, frequent reflux, was on my 10th year of acne, had eczema, reoccurring mysterious dermatitis, frequent headaches and migraines, many symptoms of hypothyroid (low body temp, always cold, icy hands and feet, no stamina, sleeping 10+ hours per day and not feeling rested), chronic diffuse hairloss, painful periods with suspected endometriosis, hormonal disturbances indicative of impending PCOS - god there's probably more I just am not thinking of. 24 years old and I was a wreck.

Now I'm maintaining my highest weight ever effortlessly without stuffing myself to busting bloatedness, my skin is clear with no effort or potions, I am stronger and more flexible than ever in my life, my body temp is a degree higher and I'm always warm, and ALL of those other health problems are gone or improved 95%. I do still get some headaches and migraines, which has been true since I was 4. My hair seems to be thickening but that is a slow process. And I get rashy when I 'cheat'.

Lost weight, got rid of asthma & allergies, sleep way better, no more bloating/gas after a meal,
normal bowel movements now, stronger, great skin, don't use my glasses as much anymore, reversed T2 diabetes, no more cavities, no negatives for me at all.

In general, tons more energy and joy.

It honestly gets easier and friends and family are more understanding and accommodating too. The kids have embraced it and consider themselves Paleo now too.

My ear wax is more wet, maybe from sweat and working out too - only negative, and not even sure it's related.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/56560/whats-the-experiences-with-long-term-paleos/56616#56616Answer by ben61820 for What's the experiences with long term Paleos?ben618202011-08-08T12:36:57Z2011-08-08T12:36:57Z
I have been strict paleo for about two years.

In that time I’ve done everything from LC to eating-only-animals to VLC to high-starch to lots of dairy, no-dairy, IFing with an 16/8 window, eating every 3 hours, etc. In other words, all while being paleo, I’ve experimented with tons of foods.

I have purposefully lost weight, gained weight, and maintained weight all while being paleo as well.

What I like about it:

eating is simply simpler

eating whole foods, almost no matter what they are, results in general well-being

I have no desire to eat processed foods that used to admittedly have some allure

I look forward to cooking all my meals (granted I'm generally only cooking for one;)

my skin has greatly improved

I have pretty much constant good energy

I sleep better than any other point in my 31 years of life

I don't really have any mood fluctuations. I'm generally pretty happygolucky

My digestion is strong like bull

My body seems to want physical exertion. There seems to be an innate drive to keep moving, be physical, use my body, etc. Nothing too crazy like I wanna leap tall buildings, but rather a good, basic drive to tackle any obstacle in my way? Sounds a bit goofy I know. But I think this is a gradual result of eating well all the time; I believe that my body is in a pretty solid healthy state and so there is just this drive to use my power. Wow, I'm starting to sound silly.

What I don't like:

nothing. Eating whole foods makes me happy and healthy.

No longer get intermittent migraines. At least not unintentionally, now when I do it is a result of me intentionally gluten-izing myself (i.e. New York pizza).

Solved my insomnia. No more teeth grinding when I sleep. Can actually fall asleep when I lay down.

Visible facial inflammation reduced to zero.

Lost a bunch of weight I had put on post-college. Excellent Muscle growth.

Much better mental sharpness/more productivity.

Haven't been sunburned for a long time.

Summa summarum: My life is better on an order of 1,000x. Happier and healthier.

Right now: Still tinkering around the edges with regards to fitness (modified CF) and managing stress levels/cortisol/leptin - but path is clear and getting clearer every day.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/56560/whats-the-experiences-with-long-term-paleos/56690#56690Answer by Bryan for What's the experiences with long term Paleos?Bryan2011-08-08T19:27:07Z2011-08-08T19:27:07Z
I've been on the diet for maybe 7 years... about the time Cordain published the first Paleo Diet book or maybe a little bit before that.

I was a teenager and a bodybuilder then. I've noticed my allergies and acne decrease. I had been on acne medication and used to get several new comodones each day--I get zero now when I'm strict with the diet. Honestly I've lost some muscle because it is expensive and inconvenient to get the protein one needs without dairy and grains, but I obviously think going without them is better. I probably also lost muscle because bodybuilding is less of a priority to me these days.

Didn't have many problems beforehand because I was an athletic teenager. I wish I had started a decade earlier and then I wouldn't have needed to get my wisdom teeth taken out, laser eye surgery, braces, had a wider jaw, acne scars, etc.

Since I've been on the diet so long, it's hard to tell what things are "results" from the diet or not. I can't handle hot sauce at all anymore and that came more recently (but my whole family has a history of stomach problems).
