I've recently started making bone broth out of beef bones from the local butcher. It makes all food we add it to taste great and feels like its doing me good.

I read somewhere that doing a bone broth fast can be beneficial to the lining of the gut wall and for general health (sorry can't find the link now). Has anybody done a bone broth fast? If so for how long and what approach? I'm thinking about maybe a 24 hour fast every couple of weeks of nothing but nutritious healthy broth (and water?).

Usually 2 hours is enough for a very tasty beef stock. I add to my stock: Finely ground browned beef (more the better), tendons, bones with cartlidge. I get joint bones from butcher, they are the best for stock, most gelatin. I roast all bones before cooking the stock. Ofcourse there is the usual vegs mixed in, carrots, onion, garlic and star anise, black pepper, and fresh herbs. USually thyme and parsley stalks.

Today i am trying to do it little differently. I put a large ox bone joint to the pot and cook it at high pressure 5 hours, after that i remove them and add the browned ground beef and other meat trimmings, herbs, spices and aromatics and cook 2 hours.

Unfortunately I was traveling shortly thereafter so it was just to get me healed enough for the trip.

I plan on doing a full GAPS again after I get moved and settled so i can do it for the length of time I need for proper healing.

Its a good idea if you need to do it, you can do avocado and boiled carrots after a day or two to help feed yourself as well.

Toss a few whole chickens in a big pot and simmer away for hours (minimum 5-recommend 6-8) toss in a few carrots. They say just reboil the broth every 4 days and it will remain good, no need to toss anything.

I strain it for clarify it so its a golden consume (its more appealing to look at sometimes). You can add some plain gelatin if you need it as well, this helps for repairs, or if you didn't get enough goodness out of the carcass.

They say you can use a whole roasted carcass after you've eaten it and simmer that up, but I've not gotten good results for some reason. (I can only do chicken because of allergies)

good luck!!

I have started making bone broth every other day. I can say I feel better in my tummy. It has only been four days, so I can't say too much about it.
I have been gluten free (almost consistently) for a year now. I am allergic to wheat, dairy soy, peanuts. I have a hard time with legumes and raw veggies (such as raw kale) and I think the GAPS protocol might help me get back to introducing at least raw veggies and eggs into my diet again.
Any comments on this friends?
I had an after thought. I have a turkey neck. Does that make a good tasting broth on it's own? Afetr

In the GAPS protocol, you would add a little raw eggs yolk first to see if you tolerate that, I still can't may never eat eggs again, boo hoo. But those of us who have done GAPS for a long time (1.5 years) will let you know for instance I could not eat any raw veggies for over 6 months. I ate nothing but broths, meats, fats and cooked veggies in that time. I had IBS for fifteen years so I may have taken longer. It is hard to get past the mind set that we will become deficient without raw veggies or fruits, but especially high oxalate greens really caused me great pain. A turkey neck would be wonderful, but not enough to make more than 3-4 quarts, would not be gelatinous enough. Also, be sure you get some potassium in you many GAPSters have had problems with potass. deficiency at first, leg cramps, dizziness. Good luck

M.2012-03-27T10:53:11Z2012-03-27T10:53:11Z
I eat that since I was a child, I d say , I remember myself eating that kind of stuff since I was 6 years old... I am 33. Till I was 28 I never been sick in my life, not even flu! Then when I was 30 I was diagnosed with endometriosis and had to go under operation. that was 4 years after I left my parents house (where I used to drink bone broth on a weekly basis) I moved out of their house , came to live in London and abused of London lifestyle of nightclubs , parties and all rubbish that comes with it, that s probably why I got endometriosis. To cut it short , I m 33 now and I drink bone broth on a weekly basis. I feel better than when I was 25, 26...My skin is perfect and some people find hard to believe I m more than 25 years old. So , I guess this stuff is good and if you have children and you love your children like my mum and dad loved me, pls, give it to them. Love to u all!

You know because of all the antibitiocs and so on.

Also does anyone know for example if i'll put carrots in the broth will they release the sugar into the added water or the sugar will still retain in the carrot? I'm probably just over reacting lol :)

Anyway what about gelatine supplement does it need to be organic for the same reasons as above.

Thanks!!!

IT WORKS! I am still coping with environmental allergies but find I am reacting to very few foods lately, tolerate raw veggies and fruits, even the ones that used to make my mouth burn. I can eat good quality raw dairy products (yogurt, cheese, soured cream) again after years of getting terrible digestive side effects (from pasteurized/processed cheap garbage). Just can't say enough good stuff about the GAPS diet and all it has taught me about quality food and eating well!!

But... still notice a great deal of inflammation intermittently in my upper left abdomen. Seems to come on after consuming even the tiniest amount of good quality, organic, dry red wine or any other alcohol. Pancreatitis?? I don't have firm "diagnosis" from a doc but I'm thinking so... :(

Dr. NCM says in the "FAQs" section of the gapsdiet.com website that a good fast is the only way to really give the pancreas a break from digestion and do some solid healing.

So my question is: does bone stock give your pancreas this kind of break?? How about veggie juice? To give the pancreas a digestive break do you need to do a full water fast?

Turkey neck guy: Yes! Make stock with it! And YES GAPS will help you with your food intolerances and has even been reported to heal true allergies with enough time! Add your pastured egg shells and a couple tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar to the stock pot too!

I've wanted to do a broth fast or a juice fast for a while now but I'm afraid to go for more than a day because I'm so weak. I'm unsure whether I'd lose even more weight or if it would make no difference either way.

My friend knows someone who's apparently been on nothing but broth for months now and she apparently seems fine... I can't really believe it, however.
