Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? - PaleoHacks.com most recent 30 from http://paleohacks.com 2013-06-19T00:27:03Z http://paleohacks.com/feeds/question/70639 http://www.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/rdf http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? jim_bob 2011-10-15T21:49:32Z 2011-10-15T23:46:49Z
I'm a college student with variable amounts of free time to go shopping. In a pinch, I go to the little store at my school for a bag of baby carrots and, for satiety, a dip. Sometimes they have full fat Fage, but other times, it's a toss-up between hummus (Sabra) and sour cream (generic brand). I know the hummus has canola oil and chickpeas, which are both pretty bad. However, sour cream is straight fat, so not much protein or vitamins/minerals. Which should I go with (also open to other suggestions -- 7-11 type stuff available)?
http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream/70641#70641 Answer by Nick for Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? Does one have more of a negative effect on you than the other?

Also, rather than buying these less-than-ideal foods, how about stocking up on your preferred foods whenever you go to a proper grocery store? If you only go once a month, buy enough to last you 1.5 months. That way, if your monthly outing is delayed, you'll still have some reserve.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream/70654#70654 Answer by KiwiRed for Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? I've found a very nice tasting brand which comes out quite good when mixed with a little cider vinegar (and tastes great as a dip for banana chips).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream/70656#70656 Answer by Bread-Eating Beelzebub for Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? If not, sour cream is definitely more benign and many paleo-style diets, such as the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson, recommend it. It has probiotics and good fats. I eat sour cream sometimes.

Hummus has nasty legumes and tons of bad omega-6 fats.

If you are strict about paleo or just starting out and want to see what dairy-free does for you, I would suggest almond butter. It's got a little too much omega-6, but it's balanced with healthy vitamin E.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream/70658#70658 Answer by January for Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream? January 2011-10-15T23:39:41Z 2011-10-15T23:39:41Z
Definitely the sour cream. Lots of Paleo peeps do dairy, and as Melissa said those are good fats. I'd avoid the hummus not just due to legumes but also due to the canola oil -- avoid those industrial oils like the plague.

Are you able to get to a real grocery store, or just the campus store? If you can get to a grocery, you could get a collapsible cart that fits easily onto the bus (I have to get my food by bus, too, so I have a cart from Amazon).

Props on the canned sardines! Good nutrition. I try not to get too hung up on BPA's when options are very limited, but try to get BPA-free if you can. Also, get the fish packed in water; the cans are heated to cook the fish, and so olive oil is likely oxidized.

Amazon also has lots of coconut products, too. They can get pricey, but it's great if you're stuck.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/70639/which-is-more-paleo-hummus-or-sour-cream/70659#70659 Answer by Jeniffer for Which is more paleo: hummus or sour cream?
