Hey guys! I am not very educated on the Paleo Diet. I have been researching what I can, but I still feel that I have sooo many questions and not all the books have the answers that I am looking for. So I thought I would ask you all! I have read in THE PALEO DIET book that bacon is out of the question. Yet I have read in other books that bacon is a great source of fat and that I should be eating it. I have stayed away from it for the whole four months that I have been Paleo, and I'm wondering if its something I am better to stay away from? Or something I might be able to add in?? I just recently got a cookbook called Make It Paleo, and it is amazing! I cannot wait to try all of the recipes, but so many of them are with bacon that it got me wondering if it was ok or not. I am trying to stay a strict Paleo. I also see in this cookbook that there are waffles, bread, etc made with almond flour. Once again, am I better off staying away from almond flour and anything like that? or do you all use that as well? Thank you guys for helping out a newbie!

However, almonds, along with most other nuts, are pretty high in pro-inflammatory n-6 fatty acids, so don't eat too much almond flour.

Some say "not" and others say "a little" while still others say "Go for it!"

In my case, I have naturally low cholesterol so I like to fry bacon at moderate heat to "liquify the pan" before adding other meat and vegetables/bone broth.

I prefer uncured, and my very favorite is grass fed uncured.

If you love it and you feel great after eating it and your bloodwork is great, GO FOR IT! (That's just me though.)

Instead of Almond flour (although great) try coconut flour for the majority of your flour needs. Other than that your ok.

Keep asking questions, that how you learn!

I am pretty meh about Paleo waffles, bread, lemon squares, baked goods, etc… I just don't equate these with my approach to paleo/ancestral. I am also pretty skeptical about the whole idea of making “healthy” versions of your favorite food because that just seems like an excuse waiting to happen to (over)eat all you want.

I do think it's important to buy nitrate-free bacon though.

I think using almond flour is ok if you're supplementing regularly with fish oil. I wouldn't eat almond flour pancakes more than once a week though, even with the fish oil supplementation.

If you want to lose fat, bacon will not help you out more than lean steak. In this regard, Cordain is correct. If you are at a body fat % that you truly desire and eating bacon doesn't increase it, then by all means eat it. As stated, try to find a reputable source.

The pseudo-SAD foods you're referring to are probably not toxic, but they're strange crutches that are perhaps less than optimal as you transition to a truly healthy diet. I don't know if they sprout the almonds with almond flour, but if not the phytic acid would be pretty high, just as it would be with most other flours. This doesn't mean that you need to avoid nuts/nut flours, rice, sweet/potatoes etc., just that you will probably absorb more of the minerals from your meals if you segregate the high phytate foods from the high mineral foods (meat, organs etc.)

Most of the people coming to a paleo diet are deficient in a lot of minerals. May as well replete them as rapidly as possible so that you can become healthy sooner.

You have to find what works for you.

If you can get bacon that is uncured and pastured, I don't see any reason to avoid it. However, if you are buying grocery store meat, I'd keep bacon as a once in a while thing.

There is no correlation in dietary cholesterol and heart disease despite what Pfizer says. From what I've seen in the low carb community they eat lots of bacon and they lose weight and cholesterol ratios and triglycerides get better
