I love red meat. I am a carnivore through and through. I do eat it every single day, and especially since I don't do fruit or sugar, there is nothing more satisfying than a fatty ribeye with grilled asparagus!

But the good stuff aside, lately I have been feeling a little toxic. I have noticed (my husband notices the most) that my breath is pretty bad, indicative of toxicidy in the stomach/digestive system. Without eating grains, drinking, or ingesting any sugar, what's the deal?

I have been contemplating doing a 3-4 day water fast next week while I am off from work, to try and cleanse my system to start fresh. Well, I welcome any comments or thoughts on this, as it has me baffled.

It doesn't fit the evolutionary framework, and it doesn't fit the science. I'm pretty sure you'll feel better with the fast, even with a day, and you may want to look at if some of your food habits are hangovers from CW carb-dominated culture. Eat more some days, and less on others. The beauty of the system is that it is designed to handle variation.

Are you due for a trip to the dentist? Have you noticed any tonsiliths lately (either by site, feel, or smell)?

I agree that this would mean you should drink more water, but not because ketosis strains the kidneys. There is no need to try to avoid ketosis -- it's quite healthy -- just be aware of your hydration level.

By the way, I think you mean omnivore, unless you are eating only meat. ;-)

If you're "feeling toxic" a fast followed by careful attention to what you eat may be in order. And as Ambimorph said, you may need more water. When I eat mostly meat I drink a lot more than when I have moderate carbs.

You have more choices than going back to SAD or just eating meat. You may not have your ideal mix of meat and carbs figured out yet. On a given day, just meat can be fine but for the long term some people need some carbs to keep their gut flora happy.

I adore meat, and eat a large amount every day. I also eat a moderate amount of non-starchy vegetables and at least one piece of whole fruit. In the morning I'm hungry for meat but as soon as I eat it I'm hungry for the rest.

If you're already eating things like asparagus, have another helping. Pay attention to any days that you feel better and note which vegetable, or what amount of vegetables, you ate the day before.

EDIT: And have you had your iron level checked? That's not usually a problem for women but you could be eating too much iron.

Too-much of anything is bad for you. That's what "too-much" means. Too-much is precisely the quantity which is excessive:

Too much water can kill you, so can too much air, or even too much sex.
