So excited, they are starting tomorrow. My dad eats eggs cooked in coconut oil with avocados for breakfast. Lunch for both is a salad with meat, and dinner is usually some sort of meat with vegetables cooked in kerrygold. We have been "testing it" the last week, and so far so good. Last night, we had zuchinni and squash "spaghetti" (thinly sliced) with grass fed meatballs and tomato sauce.

The only condition was that my mom be able to drink her morning shake. She has been having a morning milkshake for a long time and she refuses to do anything else. She said it must have a banana and milk, but I convinced her to let me make some changes to the rest it. She's been doing my new version for 2 days and says that she will continue with the new version from now on. I wanted to get your thoughts on the old/new shake.

Old: Regular organic nonfat milk, whey protein, a banana, soy lecithin, brewer's yeast, flax seed

New: Full fat raw milk, whey protein, a banana, dash of cinnamon, teaspoon mct oil, flax seed, 1/2 teaspoon l-glutamine, 1 tablespoon hydrolyzed collagen

I just added the things I had around. I figured cinnamon for blood sugar control since a blended banana every morning is a lot of sugar. I wanted to add some fat since there was almost none before, so I got her to drink full fat raw milk and added mct oil. Glutamine for gut health, and she doesn't get much bone broth so I thought collagen would be good. Ditched the brewer's yeast and lecithin, but not really sure about these. Kept flax but not sure if I should get rid of it too.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86820#86820 Answer by Jeff for Hack my mom's morning shake Jeff 2011-12-31T17:02:32Z 2011-12-31T17:02:32Z
I might ditch the flax and milk and use coconut milk instead. I like adding butter to smoothies too.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86822#86822 Answer by The Loon for Hack my mom's morning shake The Loon 2011-12-31T17:06:13Z 2011-12-31T17:06:13Z
Gradually reduce the amount of banana and replace with a few fresh berries. If left inside the peel, a banana can sit on the counter for a couple of days, so she can have half now and half tomorrow.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86825#86825 Answer by JitzGrrl for Hack my mom's morning shake JitzGrrl 2011-12-31T17:27:50Z 2011-12-31T17:27:50Z
Great improvements! I personally would remove the flax- ALA doesn't convert to useful o-3 particularly well. I also like a handful of well-blended raw spinach for vitamins and energy, although she might want to be cautious if her stomach is delicate.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86841#86841 Answer by holly for Hack my mom's morning shake holly 2011-12-31T18:17:16Z 2011-12-31T18:17:16Z
i'd ditch the hydrolyzed collagen. collagen supplements are a scam
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86844#86844 Answer by familygrokumentarian for Hack my mom's morning shake familygrokumentarian 2011-12-31T18:32:05Z 2011-12-31T18:32:05Z
I think that you've done a good job of revamping her routine shake.

She might also consider:

a pastured egg yolk or two? = fat + protein added

a ripe avocado in place of half a banana? = fat, fiber, so more satiating

some macadamia nut oil? --mostly monounsaturated, would add a nuttiness and richness to the taste, maybe allowing for some of the banana to be removed

shredded unsweetened coconut, coconut milk, or maybe coconut manna?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86848#86848 Answer by Nance for Hack my mom's morning shake Nance 2011-12-31T18:44:24Z 2011-12-31T18:44:24Z
With the full-fat milk, does she still need the whey? I don't agree with those who say skip the banana; just think of them as a natural sweetener to use in moderation.

I use a banana in my extra-fat yogurt every day and it works great for me (half mashed with cinnamon to stir in, the other half sliced as a topper. Berries are fine too, I just don't think we should demonize bananas.

I asked about the whey because I'm assuming your mom will take a moderate approach to exercise and whole food proteins ought to be enough. Since she was drinking milk before I'm assuming milk is fine.

The coconut products can go either way; many people can thrive with coconut but not everyone, particularly with the processed/refined products such as coconut milk/flour/cream/butter because you're getting more than you would with the whole flesh.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86874#86874 Answer by Toni for Hack my mom's morning shake Toni 2011-12-31T22:35:57Z 2011-12-31T22:35:57Z
I'd replace the whole milk with coconut milk. You can buy Native Forest at Amazon. The cans are BPA-free. It makes a great tasting shake and, in my opinion, is healthier than milk...and more Paleo.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86891#86891 Answer by Paleolady for Hack my mom's morning shake Paleolady 2011-12-31T23:57:13Z 2011-12-31T23:57:13Z
Add bacon.

Isn't everything better with bacon added?
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/86894#86894 Answer by Sneha for Hack my mom's morning shake Sneha 2012-01-01T00:32:58Z 2012-01-01T00:32:58Z
I make my milkshakes with Unsweetened Almond milk and add stevia. You can also use dates or agave syrup.

I don't like whey - It makes me super bloated, probably due to the dairy. I made a switch to Hemp Powder which has a nutty, earthy flavor. It takes some getting used to. Another option would be to use Egg White Protein Powder.

I've also used avocado in recipes, which would thicken your shake up for better texture/consistency.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake/99367#99367 Answer by Jeff for Hack my mom's morning shake Jeff 2012-02-22T01:56:20Z 2012-02-22T01:56:20Z
I came to see if anyone else takes brewers yeast or nutritional yeast, liquid lecithin, whey protein, safflower oil, nuts and banana. Great healing effects. I like the glutamine and the cinnamon idea. I also add mag citrate, ascorbic acid, and Turmeric. Your mother is wise but it don't hurt to switch things up once and a while.
