Hey everyone, switching our family to paleo, goals are health and for my DH and I weightloss. I'm Breastfeeding our 1 year old and have insulin resistant PCOS, DH is healthy, but will not stay that way if we do not lose weight. Can any one recommend a family eating plan for transition?? Really struggling with information overload, both DH and need to lose significant weight, both about 30kg. Any advice, tips on keeping kids happy and weight loss needed and welcome

Welcome to the community!

To me the most pragmatic, no nonsense approach to Paleo is Archevore and its 12 steps -
http://www.archevore.com/get-started/ . Just work your way down the steps as far as you can go.

I am also a very big fan of Perfect Health Diet ( http://perfecthealthdiet.com/ ), which for all intents and purposes arrives at the same place as Archevore on the core tenets of implementation (though some additional focus on supplementation)

One of the most accessible intros to Paleo on the web is the 9 part series by Chris Kresser - http://chriskresser.com/perfecthealth

But you are already on information overload. If I had to cut this down to the essence, the key area of focus initially should be toxin avoidance

Avoiding gluten grains

Avoiding vegetable oils

Avoiding sugar excluding possibly some fruit

Avoiding soy and peanuts (legumes)

By avoiding the above, you will naturally favor healthy animal proteins and fat, and vegetables including some safe starches such as potatoes/sweet potatoes assuming you are not starch intolerant.

Take it slow and don't worry about all the minutia you will read here and elsewhere. If you focus on avoiding toxins (as listed above) initially, the rest will fall into place. Good luck!

EDIT - I forgot to comment re: kids. For most kids, I think cutting down/out the sugar is probably the most significant change. Replacing the vegetable oils with good fats such as butter is probably relatively easy. The avoidance of grains for kids is pretty tough given the ubiquity of bread, pasta, etc in the diet of most kids and what is served at school.

This leads to another point as a newbie - don't worry about perfection right now (or possibly ever), particularly with the kids or it will drive you insane (it did for me at least). Progress, not perfection!

A doctor that recommended paleo! Cool! When I started paleo I used paleo plan. They send you a menu and shopping list for the week, every week. It was a lifesaver! I think it's paleoplan.com

And seriously, take it one step at a time. Do it in a way that makes sense to you and your family. If everyone's on board, it can be a real bonding experience. Find things everyone loves and make it as fun as possible. Consider visiting local farms/ranches to show your kids where their food comes from. Get them involved as much as you can.

Also, don't go overboard with this stuff, but elanaspantry.com is a great resource for baked treats that keep you in the realm of real food and your kids don't have to feel like a pariah without cupcakes in their lives. Since your goal is health and weight loss, this stuff can be an impediment, so tread carefully and don't make them staples.

Good luck on your Paleo adventure!

But, if you feel like dropping the money for a book, I'd recommend you buy Sarah's actual book of the same name. It's a good overview of paleo, but with a focus on moms and families. Another mom who writes a paleo blog is Michelle at www.nomnompaleo.com.

The only thing I would add is that minimization to those unhealthy things in our Standard American Diet (wheat, refined seed oils, refined sugar, processed soy, etc) gets you 90% of the benefits of totally cutting them out. With newness of paleo, and the children factor, I can see flexible paleo as working quite well for your family. Control what you can control and don't sweat the other stuff too much. Keep your kitchen as strict as possible, but when outside your home, just eat like a normal person, not necessarily a caveman/woman. Good luck!
