(as a job) Cheryl 2012-07-17T17:57:16Z 2012-07-17T17:57:16Z
I'm a legal assistant working in a practice that focuses on asebestos defense litigation. Super high-paced and very stressful, but I enjoy the people I work with, fortunately. The worst part is sitting at a desk for the better part of 8-10 hours/day. I have asked for and will be getting a mechanized standup/sit down desk. Yay! Of course, the HR manager thought I was a little crazy for asking, but then again, she knows I'm a little crazy from my "diet" and how I don't partake in any of the food provided for the firm lunches/staff meetings. I've been Paleo long enough that people have finally stopped pointing out the fact that I bring my own food to every function and have stopped commenting on the oil slick on my plate in the lunch room. :)
http://paleohacks.com/questions/132901/wife-has-an-odd-feeling-while-eating-paleo/132946#132946 Answer by Cheryl for Wife has an odd feeling while eating Paleo Cheryl 2012-07-06T16:19:01Z 2012-07-06T16:19:01Z
When you state "in her stomach" I am guessing you mean just that - in her stomach. I believe this is because she is having trouble digesting so much protein. I had those issues when I first went Paleo. It has no passed, thankfully. First thing, don't drink any liquid an hour before meals - water or other liquids dilute the stomach acid and, therefore, hinder the body's ability to digest the protein. She might even need to get some Betaine Hydrochloride prior to meals for awhile to help get the stomach acid production started. Let me know how she's doing.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/128976/anyone-here-planning-to-do-a-whole30-soon/129021#129021 Answer by Cheryl for Anyone here planning to do a Whole30 soon? Cheryl 2012-06-19T19:13:50Z 2012-06-19T19:13:50Z
Yes, I am planning to do another Whole 30 - probably starting July 1st. I ordered "It Starts With Food" yesterday and it should be here via Amazon Prime tomorrow afternoon. I was happy to hear that ghee had been added into the Whole30 experience! :) I am going to have a really, really hard time cutting out the macadamia nuts and dark chocolate, however. But I will do it - it's just for 30 days! Although I am going to have some issues when I start training harder on my bicycle. I'm fairly certain that Lara Bars are not Whole30 approved even if they don't contain peanuts. I'm not doing it to feel any better, I already feel pretty darn great as I'm 98% compliant but for the dark chocolate and too many nuts, I just want to drop these last nagging 8 pounds. I'm definitely up for a group "meetup" or however we want to work that aspect of it!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/128030/paleo-personalities/128103#128103 Answer by Cheryl for Paleo Personalities??? Cheryl 2012-06-15T21:25:22Z 2012-06-15T21:25:22Z
I'm definitely a Type A personality. I'm extremely organized and have lists for everything. I have a place for everything, and definitely enjoy it when everything is in its place. I just feel better (mentally) if my life is organized. Fortunately, Paleo made the anxiety I used feel when things were messy, or my husband left crumbs everywhere go away. Yay for that! I am a bit more relaxed about "messes" now, too, but still am not a spontaneous person much to many of my friends' dismay. :)

That being said, I am very organized about Paleo - almost a Paleo Nazi. I'm also a total Foodie and I love planning my grocery list for Whole Foods and browsing my Nom Nom Paleo iPad app for meal ideas, etc. There is nothing convenient about Paleo (i.e. there are no quick, convenient snacks other than nuts, jerky, fruit and hard-boiled eggs) and I often wonder how my less-organized friends do it. I have one Paleo wanna be friend at work and when it comes to bringing food to work with her that is Paleo, she's an absolute disaster and always having to eat nitrate filled bacon and sausages and eggs scrambled in industrial seed oils for breakfasts because she can't organize herself to cook and prepare for the week. I actually feel bad for her as she has pretty severe autoimmune and inflammation issues (even more than I do). She's told me she feels amazing when she eats strict Paleo, but then doesn't make it a priority in her life to provide herself with foods that keep her feeling good. I don't get it, personally. Probably because I feel SO MUCH BETTER eating Paleo and my life is better in SO many ways because of what I consider to be pretty simplistic diet changes. Who knew that I didn't have to suffer with endless allergies and severe chemical sensitivities for decades just by avoiding wheat/gluten and diary? Really? It was that simple? :)

Sorry, I got off track. I am definitely Type A and would be interested in hearing how non-Type A's plan for the week and what you eat for convenience when you don't bring your own food and IF isn't an option (i.e. you're starving!).
http://paleohacks.com/questions/127395/delicious-alternatives-to-coffee/127460#127460 Answer by Cheryl for Delicious alternatives to coffee? Cheryl 2012-06-13T14:52:36Z 2012-06-13T14:52:36Z
I can't do caffeine at all either. It does very strange things to my body - darn adrenals! Anyway, I know this isn't "tea" but it technically could be. I bought some organic roasted chicory on amazon.com a few months ago and I've fallen in love with it. It's not exactly like coffee, but it's darn close and gives me that "comfort food" feeling that coffee used to bring me. Mind you, I can't do dairy either so I use almond or coconut milk to make it creamy (never liked sugar in my coffee, thankfully). It's delicious and a great alternative to coffee and something different than herbal teas.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/127368/stopped-using-toothpaste-and-using-fclo-bo-teeth-now-more-sensitive-ouch/127459#127459 Answer by Cheryl for Stopped using toothpaste and using FCLO/BO - teeth now more sensitive? Ouch! Cheryl 2012-06-13T14:49:51Z 2012-06-13T14:49:51Z
I was having major sensitivity issues pre and post Paleo. I was using prescription fluoride toothpaste and it was getting worse and worse. I tried baking soda and other natural methods in conjunction with the RX toothpaste, only to have my sensitivity increase. I even went to the dentist about the increasing sensitivity and was told I had receding gums and might need a root canal on the one tooth. I refused to give up and give into conventional wisdom and sought out another option. I found this:

www.orawellness.com

I've been using the blushing blend for 4 months now and love it! My sensitivity has been greatly diminished and my teeth and mouth feel super clean after I use it. My gums feel better, etc. The one tooth I thought needed a root canal - wouldn't even know it's there anymore. Crazy! Try it - they have a money-back guarantee and are really friendly (and Paleo friendly, I believe) folks. Good luck!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/116223/avoid-coffee-if-gluten-intolerant/116316#116316 Answer by Cheryl for Avoid coffee if gluten intolerant? Cheryl 2012-05-01T18:56:30Z 2012-05-01T18:56:30Z
I have a definite reaction to coffee and I'm absolutely gluten intolerant. I think the two go hand-in-hand and cause problems and/or adrenal fatigue. I can't even do decaf coffee as it seemingly has "too much" caffeine for me. I have found that organic roasted chicory with almond milk to be a great alternative for coffee and has some of its own health benefits as well.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/116294/are-there-natural-paleo-friendly-ways-to-reduce-inflamation-in-tendons/116313#116313 Answer by Cheryl for Are there natural, Paleo-friendly ways to reduce inflamation in tendons? Cheryl 2012-05-01T18:53:18Z 2012-05-01T18:53:18Z
Heat before physical therapy exercises, then ice after helps significantly (I had a shoulder injury followed by months of shoulder impingement and 6 months of physical therapy). I agree with the other poster re: fasting helps inflammation in general. My blood pressure readings always drop 10-15 points on my fasting days. Crazy, but true. Accupuncture works for a couple of days, but honestly, I think the best thing would be to take the cortisone injection if it's offered and do the strengthening/stretching offered by the physical therapy and let it work its way out. You might have increased blood sugar readings/cravings while you have the cortisone (I was very strict Paleo when I had my cortisone injection) so it isn't ideal, but man it works on shoulders - and quickly. It allowed me to do the physical therapy strengthening and stretching exercises and heal more quickly.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/115276/dairy-and-tendonitis-muscle-issues-any-connection-possible/115288#115288 Answer by Cheryl for Dairy and Tendonitis / Muscle issues? Any connection possible? Cheryl 2012-04-27T18:36:13Z 2012-04-27T18:36:13Z
Hi, Mike. Yes, I have a really bad issues with tendonitis/muscle pain/joint if I consume dairy (among other issues with dairy - allergies, etc.). Once I went strict Paleo (vs. Primal). It tends to affect my hands, wrists, knees, forearms, etc. Interestingly (and thankfully) I have not had any muscle pain other than the self-inflicted kind from lifting heavy things since I eliminated dairy 100% from my diet. Well, except for the use of pastured ghee which is divine melted over hard cooked eggs (fried or boiled). If you tolerate coconut or almond milk well, it's not a big deal to get rid of dairy, really. Try it for 30 days - what do you have to lose except the pain? :)
http://paleohacks.com/questions/112618/low-carb-high-protein-low-testosterone/112620#112620 Answer by Cheryl for Low carb, high protein... low testosterone?? Cheryl 2012-04-17T15:54:03Z 2012-04-17T15:54:03Z
Thank you for posting this. I, too, have experienced a lower libido since going Paleo and being strict about my carb consumption. Most of my other health maladies are now gone so it seems a small price to pay, but I bet my husband would beg to differ on that front. :) Please everyone, chime in - let me know if you think that upping carbs (sweet potatoes, acorn squash, white rice) might help in this department. Thanks!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/152201/non-paleo-enviroment/152235#152235 Comment by Cheryl Cheryl 2012-09-27T15:29:07Z 2012-09-27T15:29:07Z This is a nice thought - eating neolithic foods once in awhile won't kill me - but you obviously don't have any autoimmune disorders or true gluten or dairy intolerances. I do. It's ugly when I go "off Paleo" and I don't really care if people think I'm rude for not eating their food. I simply bring my own. My true friends are used to it; others, I don't really care. They don't have to live with the consequences that happen to my body if I don't eat strict Paleo. I'm polite in my declinations of hospitality, but I don't care in the end if they like it or not. http://paleohacks.com/questions/145759/dealing-with-a-not-very-supportive-spouse Comment by Cheryl Cheryl 2012-08-28T15:04:33Z 2012-08-28T15:04:33Z I agree - Paleo "cheats" are Faileo and will only set you up for cravings later. Never caught it full on. I firmly believe that grains left me susceptible to infections before Paleo and I was sick much of the time. I had no idea that gluten was such a huge problem for me until I went Paleo and felt SO MUCH BETTER! Now, I can't tolerate gluten very well at all. Same goes for dairy - and I was addicted to milk, yogurt and cheese. Even if I wasn't "pure Paleo" I'd never eat those food items again because I feel so sick from them. Listen to your body - you are obviously not tolerating those foods well anymore - like many I've talked to. Eat Paleo - or a modified version. Stay away from what you perceive makes you ill. Nom Nom Paleo has a GREAT recipe that wins rave reviews every time I share it with anyone - and one of the recipes my husband requests a repeat of the most often. It takes less than 15 minutes to prepare, but 16 hours to cook, and it is ridiculously amazing. Kahlua pork... TO. DIE. FOR. :) I would serve it with spicy roasted broccoli cooked in either lard or coconut oil alongside roasted sweet potato fries.
