It trakcs girl/hero wods as well as 1 rep maxes on lots of lifts. It's fairly cheap for an individual membership (it was 3$ a month a couple years back) and most crossfit gyms provide free accounts for their members.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/76321/natural-solutions-for-a-strained-lower-back/76348#76348Answer by Omid Khalili for Natural solutions for a strained lower backOmid Khalili2011-11-11T03:49:28Z2011-11-11T03:49:28Z
I hurt my back about a year ago falling down the stairs. Different injury as it wasn't related to lifting. (Before I fell down the stairs I was deadlifting greater than double my body weight). I didn't wait long enough to fully recover and got back into the gym to early. I also tried to pick up from where I left off before the injury and ended up straining my back even more.

Acupuncture helped me almost immediately. In addition, I've been doing physical therapy for the last 2 months. Half way through I noticed immediate improvements. It was a combination of stretches, massage, and simple exercises that helped rebuild injured muscles. I'm slowly making my way back into the gym now and am feeling pretty good again. As I got to chat with the therapist, many of the back injuries she said she sees are related to weak backs rather than trauma, like my case.

I'm not an expert or doctor, but this sounds like a case of a weak back to me. Time will heal your back; however, without proper exercise and strength training, your muscles will continue to atrophy. You will be likely to hurt yourself again and require regularly seeing a chiropractor/acupuncturist.

Physical therapy can be particularly useful as they can help assess where you are weak and provide exercises and stretches to strengthen yourself. As you recover and get stronger, you should start doing exercises like backsquats and deadlifts (under proper supervision!) to build stronger muscles in your back, legs and core. This will help prevent future injuries.

Stronger Faster Healthier makes a great fish oil. One teaspoon a day gives you ~ 2700mg EPA and DHA. If you look carefully at some fish oil pills, you'll see it says 1000mg fish oil in a serving (1 pill), but only 300 mg of the EPA and DHA (that's off the costco ones I used to use). I'd have to take 9 pills a day to equal one teaspoon of SFH fish oil!

EDIT: And I have not experienced a fishy smell or taste!

http://paleohacks.com/questions/17404/are-paleos-and-vegans-coming-from-the-same-place/17416#17416Answer by Omid Khalili for Are paleos and vegans coming from the same place?Omid Khalili2010-12-30T15:37:15Z2010-12-30T15:37:15Z
Veganism is purely about morals and the belief that animals should be treated equally and not used by man for man's own needs. Some vegans take this as far as not using oxen to help sow the land to plant the next harvest and not using service animals for the blind. The dietary aspect is born out of that, not out of wanting to be healthy.

I had a discussion about this with a good vegan friend of mine and he pointed me to here for more information.
http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/faqs/

I have always believed that mankind evolved eating animals, and if not for the ability to hunt, cook, and eat meat, we would not have evolved to where we are now. Some vegans would argue that if there were no animals, man would have found some other way to evolve to where we are now, but I highly doubt that. How else would we have gotten the levels of proteins and fat (fish oils!) that helped our brains grow to handle more complex processing?!?

Thus, I would say no, there isn't a similarity between paleo and vegan. Paleo is born out of evolutionary needs, whereas veganism is born out of ethical beliefs towards the treatment of animals. There might be a closer similarity between paleo and vegetarianism, but I don't understand a dietary movement that shuns animal meat, but says it's OK to eat their eggs and milk...

http://paleohacks.com/questions/16721/top-common-greens/16724#16724Answer by Omid Khalili for Top common greens?Omid Khalili2010-12-21T02:42:17Z2010-12-21T02:42:17Z
I love broccoli (typically steamed with butter on top), Brussels sprouts and zuchini (roasted or sauted in bacon fat). Asparagus and artichokes are used on occasion too (typically sauted with garlic). My preferred salad greens are 50-50 spring and spinache mix. Don't really like kale that much, but kale chips are on my list to try and make for dips.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/16610/baking-substitutions/16618#16618Answer by Omid Khalili for Baking substitutionsOmid Khalili2010-12-19T21:14:12Z2010-12-19T21:14:12Z
I had gone through something similar a while back when working on a paleo banana bread recipe. At first I used about a 1/3rd of a cup of honey. It added sweetness, but the thing I didn't like about the honey was it added it's own flavor that took away from the banana. I thought of using molasses or maple syrup, but those also have their own added flavors. At one point I even considered using raw sugar or sugar cane juice, but on a recommendation from a friend, I tried using dates instead and that was a huge win! Since I'm using a mix of coconut flour and almond meal, the dates also add a nice texture, in addition to the sweetness.

My recipe now calls for a little over a [tightly packed] cup of dates. Instead of chopping them up, I drop them into a blender/magic bullet with my other wet ingredients (coconut oil, eggs, vanilla extra (not vanilla "flavoring"), etc.) and blend it down to a fine paste. Otherwise, the sweetness isn't spread out well enough and you sort of bite into dates, again taking away from the bread.

I should also note that it took me many iterations over a few months to put together something that my paleo friends at the gym love, and my non-paleo friends can enjoy. If you're making this for a holiday party, make a couple test batches first!

http://paleohacks.com/questions/12430/what-is-the-physiological-response-to-puke-after-rigorous-exerciseWhat is the physiological response to puke after rigorous exercise?Omid Khalili2010-10-17T17:47:21Z2010-10-17T18:29:24Z

I know this isn't a nutrition related question, but since many people here are active, i hope someone has an answer. Plus, i've come to trust answers here.

I've spent some time googling and all i found is people's descriptions of personal experience with puking during/after a rigorous workout, or how to avoid it by maintaing heart rate levels. I'm looking for the physiological response of why this occurs, and why you feel better after the fact.

One thing I've seen come up is dehydration. However, if i try and drink during or after a tough workout, I'm much more likely to throw up.

I've been told by one of my coaches that when i feel close to puking, to walk around, breath deep, and get more oxygen. I could see a rigorous workout depleting oxygen levels in your blood, but why would cause you to puke? More importantly, why do you feel better after you puked? It's not like the act of puking adds more oxygen to your system...

My last thought comes to a fight or flight type response. A rigorous workout could parallel running away from a threat. At which point, i think of a snake regurgitating it's food to better handle the threat. With that though, i still wonder why throwing up makes you feel better when you're in such a state.

So, why are we drawn to throw up after a tough workout, and why does throwing up make us feel better?

I started crossfit to improve my martial arts training, and crossfit took everything to another level, including my diet.

Nine months ago our gym had a 40 day paleo challenge, with burpees at first if you failed a meal. I had been crossfitting for about 6 months by then. I felt like I ate pretty healthy, and questioned it at first. But, after a few weeks I noticed improvements in a few key areas. I've been maintaining at about 80% since and I feel great! No plans to go back!

It's not for weight loss. I view it as garbage in, garbage out.

Direct ice is best (5 minutes), but ice over a shirt for 20 is good too.
advil/ibprofin can reduce the inflammation and pain due to it, but i've heard from another physical therapist that those can also lengthen recovery time. His argument boiled down to inflammation is your body's way of telling you to slow down while it heals itself. If you use advil it will reduce the inflammation, but in return it also slows down your body's ability to heal itself. He strongly recommended direct ice for 5 minutes at least twice a day.http://paleohacks.com/questions/64465/im-too-skinny-is-it-possible-to-gain-heathy-weight-on-paleo/64475#64475Comment by Omid KhaliliOmid Khalili2011-09-13T02:00:46Z2011-09-13T02:00:46ZYes. It wasn't until I added more eggs and sweet potatoes to my post workout meals that I started to see major improvements. I've been gaining just less than a pound a week (going on 9 weeks now) and my belt is still the same size. In two weeks i'll have a body fat test, so we'll see then where that poundage was added!
I can tolerate milk, so i've been drinking more milk. Normally I would only have half n half with coffee, but now i'm drinking about a quart a day. Thing with the milk is, stomach issues aside, it will promote not only muscle growth, but also fat.
