Other than the diarrhea, weakness from dehydration and nausea at the thought of eating, I had no other symptoms. My three-year old twins also sampled the kombucha Friday morning before I got sick, one of them was absolutely fine and the other broke out in itchy hives on his back and also had diarrhea, but thankfully not to the extent that I did. Has anyone seen this type of reaction before? I have had kombucha many times before and have never felt sick. My batch tasted really good, there was no mold or anything that would lead me to believe that it had been contaminated. I don't think there was anything else we came in contact with that could have caused this type of reaction, but I can't be 100% sure. The only new thing was the chia seeds.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/115745/allergic-reaction-to-chia-seeds/192428#192428 Answer by primalgirl for Allergic Reaction to Chia Seeds primalgirl 2013-04-20T18:46:13Z 2013-04-20T18:46:13Z
So according to Loren Cordain, chia seeds contain saponins that can increase the reaction of other foods that we're eating them with, because they permeate the gut wall and take the other proteins/pathogens with them. Since writing this question, I discovered that I have a yeast intolerance. Kombucha is bacteria AND yeast, so the reaction was amplified in me. The yeast had a clear path right into my blood stream, which is why the reaction was so violent.

I haven't had chia seeds since, as they clearly permeate the gut wall and make me react violently to foods that I don't normally react to. The last thing I need now is to develop a new intolerance or autoimmune response to something I normally enjoy.

Thankfully, with saponins (also in quinoa, amaranth and other pseudo-grains), the reaction is dose dependent -- meaning the more you eat, the leakier your gut gets. This explains why some of you don't have a reaction until the 4th or 5th day. For those of you that react right away, I would take a real close look at what you're eating the chia seeds with. I would suspect you may have a slight intolerance to one of those ingredients.

Hooray! Since chia seeds are EVERYWHERE now, this is really something to be on the look out for. They're in gluten free crackers, energy bars, even in pureed fruit for kids.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools Pale Colored Stools primalgirl 2011-06-08T15:49:00Z 2013-02-18T05:10:57Z
For the last 3 days, my poop has been very light in color, enough to where it has freaked me out. There's also a lot of it, like when I used to eat fiber supplements (pre-Paleo). Google said pale/clay colored stools can be indicative of liver problems. I would rather have you guys hack this than go to the doctor, who will tell me to eat less fat. O_o Here's my info: 36YO female, at ideal weight for my height. Mostly Primal/Paleo for the last 2 years, no major changes in diet lately, except for a few cheats with wheat (but I've had pretty consistent cheats during the last 2 years with no problems). Feeling good other than the pale poop. Mild low backache after going to the bathroom, which lasts for 15 minutes. Extreme stress in personal life, more than normal. Had breakthrough bleeding last week, which is indicative of hormonal fluctuations since I'm not on the pill or taking HRT. Not pregnant, also STD free. Not sure if this is related, but thought it's worth a mention. Please hack my poop! LOL. Actually, I'm a little worried. I know if I go to the doctor, they'll tell me my horrible Paleo diet is putting too much stress on my liver and tell me to eat whole grains without doing any testing (yay US Military doctors!). I would much rather see if any of you have experienced similar things.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/130741/how-wide-spread-is-depression/130821#130821 Answer by primalgirl for How wide spread is depression? primalgirl 2012-06-27T02:39:18Z 2012-06-27T02:39:18Z
Fructose malabsorption causes ALL those things in me: IBS, bad skin and depression. What I have seen from the PFX staff so far has blown me away in terms of organizing, delegating and creating a chain of command. These people know what they are doing and this event is going to be amazing. If anyone stays away because they don't like a particular speaker (review the AHS lineup before you judge, cough cough, Don Matez, cough cough) they will be missing out. PFX was designed to be a sister/companion to the AHS. For those of you not there, the AHS was all lectures. I learned one hell of a lot, but a lot of it wasn't applicable to me. When I wasn't interviewing the speakers, I was sitting down, watching presentations. At PFX, people will be shown various ways to actually LIVE a Paleo lifestyle by people who do it every day, plus they'll have cooking demos and actual meals served. I wish that more people could attend, if only to see vibrant examples of our community. We are too new and too small to be dividing ranks already.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/54761/how-will-we-know-who-the-other-paleo-hackers-are-at-the-ahs/54777#54777 Answer by primalgirl for How will we know who the other paleo hackers are at the AHS? primalgirl 2011-07-29T21:51:38Z 2011-07-29T21:51:38Z
I'll be there conducting interviews in the main patio, stop by and say hi! You have to ask EVERYWHERE. Not only do most restaurants use soy oil, it is HYDROGENATED soy oil. That's what they're cooking your food in, too, so beware. It's not just the butter on the table. I have not had any success in getting anything fried in butter recently at all - the best solution a small mom and pop place could give me last week was canola oil, which I declined. Any large chain restaurant you are S-O-L. I suggest bringing your own butter. When I eat at a place like Red Lobster, I bring my own butter, my own melting pot, my own tea-light candle and matches. I stare defiantly at the staff, DARING them to say something to me, but no one ever has. They know the "butter" they serve is actually hydrogenated oil. Why do you think it doesn't EVER congeal?!?!? Sorry, now I'm getting pissed off all over again. I had a similar experience as you, to include migraines and diarrhea, after being reassured that the "butter" was indeed "butter." I eat out less than once a month because of this crap. Oh, and did you know that most steaks, chicken, etc. are brushed with a solution containing gluten before they're cooked? It's what gives the meat the "grill marks." And what makes me very, very ill. I didn't know this until Outback Steakhouse offered "gluten free steaks" and a waiter explained it to me. Have fun, kids. It's a dangerous, effed up world out there.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/49407/increased-bruising/49465#49465 Answer by primalgirl for Increased Bruising primalgirl 2011-07-04T15:34:51Z 2011-07-05T01:01:26Z
Celiac Disease and gluten intolerance can lead to easy bruising. I had a huge burst of energy around 3-4 months into it, but since then I've been tired all the time. My sleep quality is the same that Eazine described. I've tried increasing my carbs, decreasing my carbs, using magnesium, eating lots of fat. I don't seem to have the energy for exercise anymore, let alone daily activities. My weight loss has been stellar - I've lost over 100 pounds - and I have no problem keeping it off. But I can't seem to get out of bed in the morning, though. What I do is get double of whatever meat looks the most appealing, skip the fries/pasta/carb side dishes and go to the salad bar. How does it affect fat loss? primalgirl 2011-04-25T15:28:21Z 2011-04-25T15:28:21Z
I use edible marijuana products as a pain reliever (if you get the butter you can make Paleo friendly edibles yourself). I used to smoke it all the time, but when i quit smoking cigarettes, I could no longer smoke weed without the association. I agree with some of the other answers, it's all about dosage. Obviously it's not part of my everyday diet and I don't have much when I do eat it. But I have to believe it's far better for me than the pain relievers (Vicodin, Ibuprofen) and anti-anxiety medications (Valium) the doctors push on me. I do get the munchies, though, so I have to be careful. It makes me a little more likely to have a "treat" if it's around me at the time. It's not a great tool for weight loss, but I would say it's a fairly "Paleo" type of medication if you use it correctly.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/34820/chain-smoking-raw-vegan-whats-the-thought-process/34868#34868 Answer by primalgirl for Chain smoking raw vegan - what's the thought process? primalgirl 2011-04-25T00:19:56Z 2011-04-25T00:19:56Z
I was a smoker for 20 years before I went Paleo. So bad that I had to resort to IVF to have a baby because scar tissue had ravaged my fallopian tubes. After the pregnancy, my periods resumed as per normal - excruciating pain, clots, back pain (I regularly had endometrial tissue make it's way to an area which caused severe back pain, and ensuing ultrasounds) and the heaviest flow ever. I started the Paleo/Primal diet around 5 months after delivery, and it took about 3 months for my periods to become regular again. I do not consider myself to have endometriosis anymore, as I have absolutely no symptoms. However, I am certain if I went back to the standard American diet, it would come back with a vengeance. For me, cutting gluten and wheat out of my diet improved things, but didn't solve the problem. Neither did exercise. It was the regulation of my insulin over a period of months that finally did the trick.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/23111/after-true-paleo-for-several-months-ditched-4hb-after-1-week/23120#23120 Answer by primalgirl for after true Paleo for several months...ditched 4HB after 1 week! primalgirl 2011-02-14T18:42:14Z 2011-02-14T18:42:14Z
I saw the book at the store yesterday and was thinking about picking it up since I've heard so much about it lately. Now that I'm eating Paleo, my skin is clear and radiant. However, if I eat lots of sugar or anything with maltodextrin in it, my skin will break out within 2 days. I've tested it over and over with the same result. I've found that going Paleo has allowed me to shower less often, which has reduced my need for all kinds of products, including moisturizer. I still wear deodorant, I guess as a type of insurance policy, but I only wash my hair once a week. I don't wear sunscreen either, and haven't been sunburned since going Paleo. I've heard that people use coconut oil for all types of things, including in their hair, and that is something I'm going to try next. It worked. At first, I just skipped my evening meal every so often. Then, I stopped eating breakfast. I wasn't hungry in the mornings so it seemed logical. However, believe it or not, it started to affect my sleep. I ate two meals a day - the first at around noon and the second at about 8 at night. I think eating too close to bedtime and then not eating first thing in the morning affected my internal body clock in some way, because I developed insomnia which I had never had before. Once I threw in a morning meal, it went away. However, it worked great to lose that last 10 pounds. I ate whatever I wanted for those 2 meals and didn't count calories - just tried to stay as close to Paleo as possible. My advice is to listen very closely to your body. It's great to follow someone else's plan, but making up one that works for YOU is even better. If you start by periodically skipping a meal that you don't really want anyway, you can see how your body reacts. Exercising while in a fasted state is also really awesome and the meal you have afterwards will be one of the best you've ever eaten!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/54761/how-will-we-know-who-the-other-paleo-hackers-are-at-the-ahs/54777#54777 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-08-03T19:12:20Z 2011-08-03T19:12:20Z @Aravind: Don Matesz never got back to me, so I can't ask him WTF. I haven't gained any weight, but have had some of the hormonal issues return that signal my insulin is whacked. I've since gone strict Paleo again, and things have already improved. I'll need another couple months to see if things clear up altogether. :) http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-06-08T20:19:23Z 2011-06-08T20:19:23Z Tried that, and was told I HAD to eat grains of some sort. Was also given a lecture on the dangers of saturated fat. I don't mention this anymore, and will actually lie and tell them I eat corn and brown rice to shut them up. ;) http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools/43106#43106 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-06-08T20:01:41Z 2011-06-08T20:01:41Z Thanks, will get that checked out tomorrow. Pretty sure I'm not gluten intolerant and don't want to burn out my liver. I've done some traveling lately, so you never know... http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools/43090#43090 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-06-08T20:00:53Z 2011-06-08T20:00:53Z Hi! I've had testing for Celiac and gluten intolerance within the last 2 years and everything came back negative. I've been eating wheat over the last 2 years with no problems, this is just the past 3 days. Perhaps I've developed problems after being wheat free/treating myself when it used to be a part of my everyday diet. I don't eat out, besides the MSG/gluten/corn/soy nightmare, I just know too much about what goes on in the kitchen to enjoy the food. :) When you get sick from gluten, what are the symptoms, if you don't mind me asking? http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools/43083#43083 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-06-08T19:57:34Z 2011-06-08T19:57:34Z GB? gastro/bowel? http://paleohacks.com/questions/43066/pale-colored-stools/43072#43072 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-06-08T19:56:45Z 2011-06-08T19:56:45Z I've had all the testing for celiac, including a colonoscopy, within the past 2 years, and everything came back normal. As far as I know, I'm not gluten intolerant, just carb/sugar intolerant. :) I thought the same as you - that liver problems would take a while to develop. Perhaps I've developed Crohn's or Celiac after being wheat free for a while, it's been known to happen...I have been eating a lot of wheat lately, so you never know. Thanks for this. Going to doc's tomorrow to get tested. http://paleohacks.com/questions/22586/anyone-have-a-good-paleo-energy-bar-recipe/22587#22587 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-02-10T21:05:24Z 2011-02-10T21:05:24Z I make this one all the time, and shape them into bars instead of balls: marksdailyapple.com/cocoa-and-coconut-snacks http://paleohacks.com/questions/22381/trying-to-treat-ibs-with-paleo-how-long-does-it-take-to-work/22387#22387 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-02-09T22:41:52Z 2011-02-09T22:41:52Z I agree with Eva, visit www.gutsense.org for more information on fiber. It's a great website and totally changed my thinking about fiber. It took about 6 months for my IBS to completely go away after going Primal. http://paleohacks.com/questions/22327/thoughts-on-eating-after-workout-routine-and-what-to-eat/22336#22336 Comment by primalgirl primalgirl 2011-02-09T22:39:17Z 2011-02-09T22:39:17Z Yup, about 2 hours post workout is my feast time too. If you think about it in caveman-terms, I figure that would be about how long it would take to butcher the animal, cook it and gather some roots, shoots and berries to eat along side of it. If you needed to eat immediately after expending energy, you'd be screwed. Or gnawing raw bits of flesh off of a hastily severed bone. Yum.
