PaleoOutfitters 2012-07-21T19:10:52Z 2012-07-22T03:27:09Z
I know that a ton of carbohydrate (or protein for that matter) can make one sleepy. But a single cup of pineapple? Or one small sweet potato? Or a cup of melon?

I had been pretty high fat/mod protein/low carb for over a year and decided to add back in one cup of either fruit or sweet potato at lunch and again at dinner. My total calories remain moderate. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's fructose or glucose. With this change, right after eating, it's like I got slipped a mickey (or two).

I'm hoping my response will lessen as I acclimate. After three days of face-down-post-prandial-couch-naps, I got ahold of myself today, slapped my face, and went for a long walk to push past the Somnolent Vortex.

Anyone else have a similar response to fruit or sweet potatoes?
http://paleohacks.com/questions/133097/saturated-fat-in-beef-heart/137197#137197 Answer by PaleoOutfitters for saturated fat in beef heart PaleoOutfitters 2012-07-21T20:20:32Z 2012-07-21T20:20:32Z
If it's not grass-fed, then you may want to avoid eating too much of the fat. The fatty acid profile of grain-fed meat is far less optimal than of it's grass-fed equivalent. For instance, there will be less Omega 3 and way more Omega 6. Less conjugated-linoleic acid (CLA), as well. But, in general, it's fantastic that you are eating beef heart!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/66222/has-anyone-consulted-with-chris-kresser-wolf-other-guru-in-the-flesh/137193#137193 Answer by PaleoOutfitters for Has anyone consulted with Chris Kresser/Wolf/other guru in the flesh? PaleoOutfitters 2012-07-21T20:13:54Z 2012-07-21T20:13:54Z
I just started seeing a functional-medicine doctor in Massachusetts (where I live). She has an M.D. from a top medical school; not a degree in acupuncture or Chinese herbs. Most functional med MD's (including Paleo practioners) don't take insurance. They are basically concierge-based medicine, so, it's quite expensive.

My first visit (which lasted 90 minutes) was $750 and that did not include labs. The reason I use this kind of doctor is to be able to get blood, urine, saliva tests done that I cannot order myself (I live in Massachusetts, one of a handful of states that makes it ILLEGAL to order your own blood tests). And, to get compounded pharmacy prescriptions (thyroid, hormones).

The labs cost me an additional $1,200 at least. She uses Metamtrix (as I believe Kresser does) as well as others.

Soon, there will be a number of new solutions for people who want to get tests done periodically. For instance, the San Francisco based WellnessFX offers a new service that I'm on the waiting list for as soon as they open a branch in Massachusetts. You might want to check them out as they are in your area.

I do a lot of my own health research and really just want a doctor willing to test me and possibly tweak some prescription hormone supplements.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/137182/excessive-hunger-after-dinner/137185#137185 Answer by PaleoOutfitters for Excessive hunger after dinner PaleoOutfitters 2012-07-21T19:54:57Z 2012-07-21T19:54:57Z
Why lean meat? You need fat - animal fat especially. I call ahead to my butcher to order extra fatty cuts of grass-fed meats (because the regular cuts are way too lean).

The fat will help satiate you through the night.

You could also try a tablespoon of coconut butter when you get that nighttime craving (and it may also help you sleep).

Finally, (not my favorite option, as it's not food), you could try supplementing with some L-glutamine, which has been shown to cut cravings, especially sugar cravings.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/103581/exercise-tips-greatest-returns-on-limited-timeframe/103588#103588 Answer by PaleoOutfitters for Exercise tips: greatest returns on limited timeframe? I got my first cold in years this past week and have been much hungrier than normal. My normal two meals per day were just not cutting it. Although, the hunger seemed more driven by mental cravings than actual stomach hunger. I too have always heeded the mantra "Feed a cold, starve a fever." Nice to know that, at least anecdotally, hunger may accompany rhinovirus.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/71147/dr-quilts-magical-leptin-reset-and-ragtime-band/71452#71452 Answer by PaleoOutfitters for Dr. Quilt's Magical Leptin Reset and Ragtime Band PaleoOutfitters 2011-10-19T22:06:51Z 2011-10-19T22:06:51Z
I've been VLC Paleo for 8 months. When I started I wore size 12-14 jeans. Within a few months, I was in a size 10 jeans. And then I plateaued for three months. About 6 weeks ago, I started on the Leptin Reset protocol. I am now in size 8 jeans...and they are getting loose. I am 48 years old, and haven't been in a size 8 since college. I tell you my sizes because my weight has only dropped a few pounds during the Reset, but my body composition has changed dramatically.

I began the Leptin Rx in order to lose weight, BUT the biggest benefit is the FREEDOM from food cravings (you know, that awful, nagging "when is my next feeding" feeling that is with you morning, noon, and night). The cravings just up and disappeared. THEY LEFT THE BUILDING. This is one of the most profound changes in my adult life.

Like many others above, I eat my Big Ass Breakfast, then I eat one other meal in the mid-afternoon, and that's it. I don't think about food - except occasionally to marvel at how I don't obsess about it anymore.

I was (and probably still am a bit) metabolically deranged as it takes a while to restore optimal health. But, I do believe that following the Leptin Rx using a Paleo substrate truly works.

Thank you, Dr. Kruse, for sharing your knowledge with all of us and for freeing so many of us from the bane that is food obsession.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/26922/do-you-agree-with-dr-oz-or-gary-taubes Do You Agree With Dr. Oz or Gary Taubes? I went to London and fared well once I was there (found a restaurant that served game, another that served fish, etc.). But the hardest part was the flight there. I had ordered a non-gluten meal thinking that it would be ok, but no way - it was so full of carbs and sugar that I didn't eat for 7 hours. I now have learned that one must always bring one's own food to eat on a plane.

In regards to New Orleans, it has always been my favorite foodie town in the whole world, literally. I think you will do really well at the higher end Creole restaurants, which are less about rice and beans (Cajun) and more about lovely cuts of meat in cream sauces (it's really French cuisine underneath). Try Brennan's for brunch - their Eggs Benedict is world-renowned. Not exactly paleo, but not a carb in sight. And avoid walking by the Cafe du Monde (the fried beignets will smell too tempting). And a shot of bourbon is only 1-2 net carbs. So, go for it. Laissez le bon temps rouler!
http://paleohacks.com/questions/137182/excessive-hunger-after-dinner/137185#137185 Comment by PaleoOutfitters PaleoOutfitters 2012-07-21T20:47:39Z 2012-07-21T20:47:39Z Just be aware that a small subset of people feel edgy on L-glutamine.
