MikeD2011-02-10T17:57:47Z2013-05-16T19:36:19Z

Inspired by an old post about whether people should eat Kind Bars (the answers is no, not really) I thought perhaps some people here have some hacks for Paleo-style energy bars for snacks and on the go meals. I am generally a meat and potatoes paleo with a jerky/nut/coffee type of on-the-run style, but perhaps there are some fun 'bar' recipes out there?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/14954/telomerase-fountain-of-youth-or-cancer-agentTelomerase - Fountain of Youth or Cancer agent? MikeD2010-11-29T18:01:10Z2011-11-20T23:21:15Z

A new study came out in Nature about backwards-aging mice who had had their telomerase enzymes artificially lowered and then restored. Apparently, elevated levels of the stuff can make cells young again, reversing damage from hepatitis and alcoholism. Some say it could be the fountain of youth.

Teleomeres are the bits of DNA that protect cells, and telomerase is the enzyme associated with them. People with longer telomeres tend to live longer, healthier lives, whereas those with shorter telomeres suffer more from age-related diseases, such as diabetes, Alzheimer's, and heart disease.

It has also been implicated in both encouraging cancer and curing it...

Where does the Paleo community fall on this one? Also, if we want to increase this 'fountain-of-youth-enzyme' are there ways to get more of it from our diet?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/6912/whats-your-vitamin-d-blood-levelWhat's your Vitamin D blood level?MikeD2010-07-06T14:57:33Z2011-06-24T00:13:53Z

I just had my Vitamin D blood level checked. I took about 10K of Vitamin D3 supplements during the Spring and Winter and sometimes now when I don't get enough midday sun. I try to get sun exposure for about 30 min to an hour a day at least, more on weekends during the mid day sun. I have a pretty serious farmers tan and then a less impressive torso tan. I don't do sunscreen. My Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy blood level was 69.1 ng/mL. From what I understand that's pretty optimal. I am interested in how the rest of the paleosphere stacks up?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/16262/what-do-you-think-of-polar-bear-swims-winter-runs-ice-baths-for-weight-lossWhat do you think of Polar bear swims, winter runs, ice baths for weight-loss?MikeD2010-12-16T15:32:23Z2011-06-13T23:23:26Z

Tim Ferris' new book has an interesting chapter called Ice Age about using the cold for weight-loss and it comes at just the right time (at least here in these northern parts) for some experimenting.

His basic premise is that the body burns up energy in more ways than just exercise and one of those ways is through loss of heat. They were trying to figure out how Michael Phelps could eat so much and still burn it even though his exercise output--which is a lot--still didn't amount to what he was eating. One thing they found was that when a body is in contact with cold water we transfer heat from our body to the water. Then our body burns more calories to keep its body temp up. He claims that research has shown people can burn 4 times the amount of fat after two hours of cold exposure. He says cold stimulates certain fat cells to burn fat in the body. Interesting ideas.

I know a bunch of people here take part in Polar Bear Swims and things--probably more for fun than anything--but is anyone thinking of applying some of the cold=weight loss ideas this winter?

The real question I think is creeping up is "What is the purpose of PaleoHacks?" and from there we should define what questions should be asked. I think a lot of the major paleo questions have already been asked, so I would wonder if we are outgrowing the 'question/answer' model of this site and instead need a better way to organize all the information collected while also embracing the idea that people are on here to 'engage in discussions about' which would be outlawed by one of the above guidelines. Just my two cents.

That said, if you've been paleo for a while and you are about to go on a four week somosa and lentil binge, yes you will get the trots probably for different reasons than your classmates since you've been enjoying a form of paleo peace in your stomach that gets angry when you introduce gluten and other things. Rice (not paleo) at least is easier on the digestion so you might be able to sneak by on that and some meat and not come off as a total jerk to the locals. I've never been to India so I don't really no what its like there or what the food availability really is to travelers...

Previous work showed that children
raised on farms are protected from
childhood asthma and a class of
allergic reactions called 'atopy'.
Now, Markus Ege of the University
Children's Hospital Munich in Germany
and his colleagues have analysed the
microbial populations in dust
collected from 933 children's rooms.
They found that bacteria and fungi
were more numerous and widespread in
samples collected for children who
live on farms. They also found that
the risk of asthma and atopy decreased
as the number of microbial taxa
increased. In particular, fungi from
two genera, Eurotium and Penicillium,
were tightly associated with reduced
asthma risk.

Just doesn't seem like a person can be healthy long term on that diet without intravenous vitamin supplements. I am guessing when they get older their bones are gonna be brittle and their muscles wasted no matter what they might be like today. Also I wonder what % of their day is spent on the toilet eating all those bananas.

Edit - I just want to add another thought I just had. One reason people probably feel great initially on the all-fruit diet is that they completely drop gluten, legumes, O6 oils, dairy products. Just giving up grains probably does amazing things for people without them realizing, but its no way as good as eating a natural paleo-style diet that has all the vitamins and nutrients the human body needs.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/26848/atkins-and-low-carb-paleo/26891#26891Answer by MikeD for Atkins and (low carb) PaleoMikeD2011-03-10T19:14:35Z2011-03-10T19:14:35Z
One thing that seems missing here is that Atkins is fine with grains as long as you are on maintenance levels or are eating 'low carb' breads and things. There was a discussion of low carb tortillas earlier and I think this is a major place Atkins and Paleo part ways. Paleo is anti-grains in all amounts and at all carb levels. That said you could probably be Paleo on the Atkins diet but not all people on Atkins would be considered Paleo.

Cod Liver Oil might be the culprit. Vitamin A in large doses can lead to itchy dry skin. It is the same effect as taking Accutane, a retinoid drug which dries out people's skin to fight acne (I took it as a teen--if only I knew about Paleo then). If you are taking multivitamins or eating liver or veggie vitamin A sources you might be getting too much.

If you want to stick with South Beach or some other low-carb diet that is fine, but you cannot reap the benefits of a Paleo diet by continuing to eat this food. In fact this food contains some of the biggest baddest foods on the 'don't eat' list for paleo--extra gluten added to the food is really problematic as most people gain benefit from not eating gluten after a few weeks. I listed some links below to help you understand why these ingredients are so bad.

Ever since Mark in The Primal Blueprint told me I should work out less and take long walks more, I've been hitting the gym twice a week max to lift heavy things. I usually do squats, overhead press, bench, deadlifts, lunges, step ups, pullups, reverse pullups (to increase my pullup count) and situps.

I also enjoy good hikes and the occasional run. I wish I would swim more, but there is a perceived hassle to getting in a bathing suit and preventing myself from drowning. I was thinking of joining a Crossfit gym but who knows. I was wondering what are some of the favorite ways people stay active here on the site?

I'd blame beer, pizza and candy bar addiction for that though and genetics for making it so hard to get into shape. I think unless you have the "skinny" genes that let you digest sugars and carbs super efficiently, it is just the human genome that predisposes you to getting fat from sugars and grains.

That said, I agree with Luckybastard that it takes time to get the body adjusted after years of abuse. There is also the whole thing about fat cells making us hungry because they steal and store food energy. If you already have fat, you are more predisposed to gaining rather than losing it so it's a tough psychological battle. Luckily, the very nature of the paleo diet can turn off hunger pangs completely if done right and that added with fat burning soon the fat cells wont be able to send out messages to make you hungry and crave sugars. But it takes time to convert.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/22464/add-paleo-and-change-in-personality/22474#22474Answer by MikeD for ADD, Paleo and change in personality MikeD2011-02-09T17:15:56Z2011-02-09T17:15:56Z
Ok so I commented above that I have not seen much change for myself but I think there are some things that probably aid in ADHD relief including a low sugar diet and a solid exercise regimen which seems to improve focus.

One interesting aspect of Paleo vs. ADHD is that since ADHD is caused by poor Dopamine transmission, I wonder if dietary changes that result in a net increase of Dopamine means that one might theoretically have more dopamine being thrown at the receptors and thus maybe counter acting the disability in the brain? I don't know if that really would have an effect since the issue is with the receptors. Some studies have shown that increasing dopamine activity raises dopamine receptors while others down-regulated receptors--all drug studies...

Paleo dieters coming from SAD diets or Veggie diets are probably getting more essential amino acids from meat including tyrosine and phenylalanine both precursors to dopamine production. Connection? Again, I fear for children being raised vegan.
