Oranges13 2011-04-04T14:04:39Z 2013-04-16T12:44:06Z
I'm reading recipes across the net for how to use some marrow bones I luckily found at my meat counter this weekend. However, most recipes for soup / stock suggest skimming the fat off the broth once its done.

I know it could be reserved for later use (but in my case it will have herbs and veg stuck in it because its from a crockpot stew) but is that absolutely necessary?

I figured the reason is to lower the overall fat content of the broth to be more "healthy" but don't we want to keep the yummy healthy fat?

Thoughts?
http://paleohacks.com/questions/30324/when-faced-with-two-bad-foods-how-do-you-pick-which-is-better When faced with two "bad" foods, how do you pick which is better? Oranges13 2011-03-29T17:33:48Z 2012-09-23T04:03:36Z
For example, salad dressing. Today at work I decided to go to the grocery store and get all the ingredients for a healthy paleo-friendly salad instead of risking it with a chain joint. I succeeded!

But since I didn't have a container in which to make my own dressing, I decided to find one that was paleo-friendly in the salad dressing aisle. Wow! It took me about 10 minutes to find one that was even remotely ok, and even then it wasn't 100% perfect.

I had to decide between Newman's Own and Kraft (imagine that!!) and the deciding factor was Newman's Own had a much shorter ingredients list, even though it still contained some sugar (not corn syrup) and vegetable oils. The kraft had soybean oil much higher on the list, sugar as well, but many other ingredients near the end that were "chemical" in nature.

So I went with the one with more "natural" ingredients.

How do you decide between two sub-par foods, when you have to choose? (Please don't say "I don't pick either" as that doesn't really contribute to discussion) :)
http://paleohacks.com/questions/29073/how-many-calories-should-i-aim-for How many calories should I aim for? Oranges13 2011-03-23T15:47:14Z 2012-07-02T14:38:50Z
I'm 26, female, I currently weigh 198 and I want to lose about 40 pounds. On standard american "diet" I was eating anywhere from 1500 - 1800 calories daily (or trying to, but mostly overeating it) and losing weight (if at all) only because I was working out as much as possible.

Since the paleo diet is heavily based in meat and fat instead of carbs (and veggies have low carbs but very very few calories) I'm coming up across an issue that I have a hard time dealing with.

My calorie count is going to be tremendous with all this fat, but I won't be eating that much food.

Because I'm attempting to lose weight, I don't plan on eating starchy veg at all, so no potatoes, beans, peanuts, sugars - and I'm sort of borderline unsure what to do about dairy (such as cream, etc). Aiming for under 50g carbs, but there's no guidelines anywhere for calories (and since most diet websites assume you're getting a lot of grains, etc, I feel that the "recommended calories" on there are not going to be correct with the amount of fat that I'm eating)

I've been doing almond milk / protien powder for breakfast this week but I'm planning on eating eggs & avocado for breakfast and adding coconut oil in there more often. Sardines or chicken & veggies for lunch, most likely some form of meat for dinner (lamb, chicken, pork, beef roast). But I'm already topping 1500 calories... I can't fathom I'd LOSE WEIGHT eating 2000+ calories daily.

Suggestions? Solutions for this mental block? Help?
http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping How do you do it when the other person in the house isn't helping? I don't know but he's ordering pizzas and we have bread in the house again and its driving me mad. I already eat too much, but with all the cookies and candy and crap coming to work now too it is very very very hard to do anything right.

It feels physically wrong if someone is eating and I am not doing the same so I can't skip dinner and if someone brings treats to work its really hard to say no. If we go out to a restaurant, even if I say "I'm not going to have that bread" I usually eat a piece anyway.

I think I'm heavier now than when I started. I haven't been to the gym in months. My favorite is just going on long walks, but that isn't possible with my current schedule.

I've started doing an every-other-day routine with body weight exercises and some light cardio for a warmup (jumping jacks, climbing the stairs and running down, etc). There's a program called 100-pushups, and I'm doing that since I can only do about 4 of them right now. You do a set amount each set and then rest for 60 seconds in between for about 4 sets. Instead of resting, I'm doing lunges and squats. The cardio takes about 10 minutes and the pushups/lunges/squats take about 5-7 minutes more and let me tell you I AM BEAT by the end of it.

Now if only I could stop stuffing my face with crap.
http://paleohacks.com/questions/33890/whats-your-favorite-recovery-drink What's your favorite recovery drink? She taught me how to make the green papaya salad and I have a feeling that its very healthy (similar to kimchee I think just not fermented?) as the only ingredients are the green papaya, tomato, carrot, and some anchovy sauce, along with hot peppers. Oranges13 2011-05-16T16:04:35Z 2011-05-16T16:04:35Z
The only reason to cook lower power for a longer time is to maintain texture in your food. Every time I clean a plate I PROMISED myself I'd only eat half of I beat myself up about it. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-27T20:10:13Z 2011-10-27T20:10:13Z Travis, its not so much the cold, its the slipping on ice and cracking my head open. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T15:17:46Z 2011-10-26T15:17:46Z The problem is that we live together. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping/72697#72697 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T15:16:05Z 2011-10-26T15:16:05Z It's a mental thing, he may as well be forcing food down my throat. I've tried eating something healthy before he gets home and then making dinner for him. But I end up just eating another meal. We go to a restaurant and I'm good and get a salad but I end up eating half the appetizer and the loaf of bread. Or even if my plate is full of good things like steak and veggies, I eat until the plate is empty even if I'm not hungry any more and there's still half the plate left. It's bad. Its very bad. And I don't know whats wrong with me. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping/72736#72736 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T15:12:07Z 2011-10-26T15:12:07Z I can cook just fine! I just cook too much! And then I eat it all. We eat roasted chicken, steak, pork, ribs, all the time (we just bought a grill) but then recently he's been getting pizza or chinese food. I put too much on my plate and I clean it and then I feel sick and guilty and terrible that I ate so much food and I'm not losing weight. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping/72727#72727 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T15:07:46Z 2011-10-26T15:07:46Z I am not a morning person, and I never get tired at night, which is one of the reasons that I don't sleep enough. Getting up at 6am when I go to bed at midnight is difficult enough as it is. Getting up earlier to make breakfast is extremely hard. I usually hit snooze 2 or 3 times and by that point I have to run out the door to get to work. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping/72684#72684 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T02:20:03Z 2011-10-26T02:20:03Z I bought a tub of butter + olive oil and have been eating it by the spoonful at work. To cut sugar cravings at home I've been literally eating mouthfuls of butter. And I AM the cook. My issue there is that I eat (well.. everywhere) until I burst. Stomach says its full but hand keeps moving. But we make a regular habit of eating out at least once a week and once on the weekends. And I'm being very very bad about eating out for lunch @ work. When I remember to bring something from home I usually don't feel like eating it when the time comes. And I never wake up in time to eat breakfast either. http://paleohacks.com/questions/72677/how-do-you-do-it-when-the-other-person-in-the-house-isnt-helping/72682#72682 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-10-26T02:16:45Z 2011-10-26T02:16:45Z Well that's the super extra annoying part. It sucks. http://paleohacks.com/questions/62080/why-why-why-am-i-stuck-at-this-weight Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-09-01T18:34:54Z 2011-09-01T18:34:54Z Hey, I'm a size 12 too! When I got to that from sizes 16 and up I was THRILLED! Don't freak out - at your height and with the strength training you probably look AMAZING! You are normal - what isn't normal is the people your height who weigh 130 because they're skin and bones! Not healthy! http://paleohacks.com/questions/58481/is-weight-loss-on-paleo-slow/58495#58495 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-09-01T17:42:26Z 2011-09-01T17:42:26Z Seriously, there are no cheats, just bad choices. You have got to stick with it for as long as possible - even if you don't see results. I feel a lot better now that I've started back not eating grains and I'm going to give it a try without dairy (except butter or Ghee). 3 days in! http://paleohacks.com/questions/62069/1st-day-grain-free Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-09-01T17:38:59Z 2011-09-01T17:38:59Z Don't worry about calories as much as you worry about eating the right foods. With all that activity, 1200 calories seems REALLY low. Focus on eating well, tracking your carbs, and being HAPPY! http://paleohacks.com/questions/62069/1st-day-grain-free/62072#62072 Comment by Oranges13 Oranges13 2011-09-01T17:37:54Z 2011-09-01T17:37:54Z Don't be afraid to count calories if you need to either. I was still overeating like mad when I initially went paleo just because my stomach is totally broken.
